In 1980 Sinatra teamed up with his good friend Lee Iacocca to advertise the new Chrysler products for 1981 and 1982. Sinatra famously advertised the all new 1981 Imperial some of which bore his name. He was also used in advertising for the K cars as well. He also sang the song 'Its Time for You' for the commercials which was only sung once and never again. (see my channel for the full song)

At this time i worked in a vehicle development bldg at Chrysler Highland park this was Central engineering. I had just finished spending $16,000,000 and developing the ten most accurate Dynamometers in the industry and nobody knew that. Chrysler had a building that won awards for its 10 cylinder engine appearance (think Viper Development) and i was the guy that keep the Dynamometer accuracy number one in the world ,state of the Art. I'm just talking cause i didn't get enough At-a-Boys back then. Can't believe i couldn't get Chrysler to advertise their success, saving money.

I remember going to the Chrysler dealer in San Bernadino to check out a new '81 Imperial. It wasn't all that impressive compared to the old stock favorites of 1963, '67 or "69. The gadgets were a little overly done. Electric mirrors were weird I bgg thought. Way too puny for an Imperial and too gutless. But damn it it was painted Sinatra blue

Supposedly Iacocca took over the reins and was told the Imperial was too far along to cancel. So, he got 'ole blue eyes' to make ads for it. Too little, too late. The Imperial couldn't justify having a separate car line and soon was gone. Alas...

Thanks for sharing. Lee Iacocca was wrong about "America wants front wheel drive cars"'. The "K" car did NOT save Chrysler, we did. Notice how only the big cars of the past are what people are bidding on? Look at what sells at Auto Auctions today. Would love to see a 2-door Chrysler 300 hard top convertible. Not some small 2-seater, the market is already full of them.

@wincrasher2007 3 жыл бұрын
there was a big segment that wanted cheap, reliable cars. that's not the same love you see for collectible cars in auctions. generally speaking those are the cars young men lusted for in their youth - by the time they are middle aged or old men, they can buy them at these auctions - that is why the coupes, convertibles and muscle cars carry such high prices and are so desired. Nobody will EVER bid up a K-Car of any type. Nobody ever lusted after them. They were an affordable appliance that were all disposable, like everything from the 80's. They served their purpose - their contribution to automotive history is they forestalled bankruptcy for Chrysler (for a time) and implemented the concept of shared platform and components that companies like VW are still using today.

@@wincrasher2007 The U.S. car market was flooded with small 4-cylinder cars during the 1980's. There where plenty to choose from, never a shortage. By 1985 there where more makes (not just models) of 4-cylinder economy cars then car makes overall in the previous 20 years. For a time, even Cadillac had a 4-cylinder FWD "Cavalier" with it's cute little door handles and small leather seats. What Iaccoca did was tell every Imperial/Chrysler/DeSoto/Dodge/Plymouth owner of the previous decades is screw you. You're going to drive 4-cylinder economy cars and we don't care if you like it. No reason why he didn't keep at least one of the existing proven rear wheel drive platforms and do some improvements. The last one of which was the Dodge Diplomat, Chrysler 5th Avenue. The only thing he did with that is cancel it at the end of the decade. Iaccoca was one of those who didn't like large cars. He failed to see that the market still had plenty of room for them. The number one selling car in 91/92 (The year Iaccoca retired) was the biggest rear wheel drive Lexus, which is a premium make from Toyota. By the late 1980's Chrysler had surpassed it's C.A.F.E standards by a country mile, giving it room for something a little bigger. Note, the Environmental Fundamentalist who lauded Iaccoca for doing this wouldn't be caught dead in a Chrysler. Instead they bought Honda's, Subaru's and when no one was looking BMW's and Mercedes. When GM learned from their mistake of over down sizing Oldsmobile's and Buick's, Iaccoca went smaller, while GM brought back the RWD Olds "98" and renamed Buick "Road-Master". As the full size SUV market grew by leaps and bounds Iaccoca cancelled the Ram-Charger. There's much more to be said, it's import so we don't repeat history. Such as the Fiat Idiot Mr. Sergio who wanted to dump Challenger/Charger/300 and sell Ram truck division to GM. In the mean time those stupid little Fiat-500s sit there on the lot. What Iaccoca should be remembered for is this; 1. Forcing the plants to improve quality of finished product. The Big-3 and especially Chrysler where way behind European/Asian quality control of products. 2. Forcing the political issue of not buying American and that not all American products are junk. 3. Improving the moral of the regular working guy that cared just a small amount about their job. 4. The minivan market that continues to this day. 5. Giving the green light for the Viper, a car he admitted he didn't understand. 6. Retiring after driving Chrysler into bankruptcy for a 2nd time. His own words; "Where not going to concentrate on building small cars. The Japanese do it and do it well. Chrysler is going to build cars people want." Iaccoca 1991 or 1992 as I don't remember exact year. I have 3 generations of family who work(ed) for the Big-3 in Detroit and an Uncle who worked for Chrysler here in St. Louis. I myself worked at a Firestone tire/repair shop 1984-86. Someone else on this thread questioned "how old am I" LOL. It's the arrogance of the academic elite that's the problem. You don't tell the U.S. consumer what they like or want or need. Fails every time...

I read online that the Chrysler Imperial that Frank Sinatra owned suffered the few injection problem that all these Chrysler Imperial models did that year.. The fuel injection system on this 318 was a piece of junk. It suffered stalling problems. When Frank Sinatra's Chrysler imperials started to stall he took it Is back to the Chrysler dealership and told them To take his name off of the Chrysler Imperial.

K-cars were never truly loved by its owners.They bought them because they were cheap to buy.I avoided them like the plague and bought a used midsize rear wheel drive Pontiac Grand Prix instead,which also had a nice smooth ride. Back then i test drove a K-car for the heck of it.You felt every bump on the road.Some K-cars could last a long time if the owner took very good care of it but the rest were nothing but disposable cheap trash.

there was alot of competition in the 2-door "personal luxury car" segment in the 80's. At the time the Cutlass Supreme was the best selling car in America. The Imperial could just not compete - either with the lower tier GM coupes, or higher up the chain with the Coupe Deville (bigger, better quality) or the Mark VII (bigger, more luxurious).
