Royal Dad was the first Triple Crown winner at Caymanas Park and the first since Mark Twain (1950) in the annals of local racing. Indeed Winston Griffiths was ridiculed and mocked for years for not winning a Derby though he won multiple jockeys' championships (at the time 1978-80) and went on to make it a consecutive fourth later that year. Won it again many years later in 1995. Of particular note is the fact that after Royal Dad won the Derby the remaining race card was cancelled, owing to the fact the sky opened up shortly after and the track was deemed unsafe to continue. Griffiths winning his first Derby, in retrospect, epitomizes the old Jamaican adage "it's never too late for a shower of rain."

Hell's Fury offsprings also included Flaming Leaves, Furiosa, Restless Fury and Heir To The Throne, all of whom were talented campaigners as far as I can recall. On a poignant note, Wayne Sinclair seen here aboard the Paul Newman-trained Deckhand died a few weeks later on Independence Day in a road accident, while on his way to "exercise" early in the morning. Wayne arguably was the best lightweight jockey at the time, oftentimes outshining the likes of Gary Richards, Andrew Ramgeet and the late Al Gopie to name a few. Wayne also had the privilege of piloting Royal Dad in his Derby prep, where he had to dig deep to catch and run past long time leader and a very game B'Ontina in a one-mile B1 contest. Looking back, Royal Dad had the heart of a champion and actually set a record 11 consecutive wins that year, which was broken by another Triple Crown winner, War Zone (12 straight), in 1996.

Me worse than you I have watch it 5 times back to back and eye water still running. My favorite horse and Jockey.

This accomplishment is all the more MEANINGFUL because some very experienced masters of the pigskin (TOP jockeys) came solely to humble Griffiths closer to home. Consider, Mouton Cadet (Emelio "Bimbo" Rodriquez) and Forceful Native (Fitzroy "Pumpkin" Gillespie). Even expert commentator, Chris Armond, was noticeably NERVOUS when Royal Dad was crowded closer to the 2 furlongs marker. We ALL were. Fabulous victory!!!!!

Nothing special about that ride from Griffiths.... He simply had a superb horse who could NOT lose !!!!! Royal Dad was head and shoulders above all other horses.

Royal dad had gate problems and was placed in the gate way before the other horses...I remember him standing alone in the gate while the others paraded...he was kinda a diva horse...one of my favorites...

This is the Derby of all Jamaica Derbies. Especially because Griffiths was basically under a jinx and would come very close to winning races only to be beaten within shades of the wire. So much so, that in Royal Dad’s prep-race for the Derby against older horses - ‘twas the super talented lightweight apprentice Wayne Sinclair that was put astride the gelding and not Griffiths.
@monteslashandersdevilstitc6190 Жыл бұрын
Was it Wayne Sinclair or Gary Richard? I think it was Fanna and Gary Richards that was Jockeys on Royal Dad then. Thoughts

Kiddie was not pleased on how Fanna made him nervous seemingly beaten 2F out. Kiddie felt that Fanna went to the front too early and Royal Dad began to idle at the 2F

Fanna made a 7F move from midpack that took him to the lead at 4F out and outstayed some good horses and Jockeys including Forceful Native - F. Glispie, Mouton Cadet - E. Rodriques etc. etc. First of many Derby winners
@paggyD20242 жыл бұрын
Good crop of 3 year olds in 81’. Besides The Dad - Sirocco, Spectacular One, Forceful Native all became top class racers. Mid 70s through 80’s was when JA horseracing was at the height of its popularity
