Another video from the old wonky tape shelf too good not to share, John Briggs's mighty Chevy Monza & Tony Edmondson's V8 Alfa. Commentary from Will Hagon. Enjoy!
The 1981 Australian Sports Sedan Championship was a CAMS sanctioned national motor racing title for drivers of Sports Sedans complying with CAMS Group B regulations.[1]
The Sports Sedan championship was discontinued from 1982 with the introduction of the Australian GT Championship, though sports sedans were still able to race with the GT cars, while some cars such as the Chevrolet Monza and Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV were converted to GT specifications (the GT championship itself lasted only until 1985 before also being disbanded due to GT cars being outnumbered by sports sedans). Although there were minor sports sedan series run in various Australian states, the Australian Sports Sedan Championship would not return to the Australian calendar until 1991. en.wikipedia.or...

The Don Elliot owned Alfetta was interesting. Whether it ran in sports sedans or later in GT guise (complete with an upgraded 6.0L Chev V8 instead of the F5000 engine it had here), it generally changed its rear wing depending on where it raced. Tighter tracks that required downforce like Lakeside, Calder, Winton etc it ran this style rear wing (it was bigger in GT's than Sports Sedans), while at faster tracks like Adelaide International, Surfers and Sandown it ran a smaller, almost non-existent rear wing to make it faster on the straights. Like the Briggs Monza and later the Veskanda sports car, it was built by K&A Engineering in Adelaide

The Chevy Monzas used to send chills up my spine when I was a kid watching this. Standing up on the control tower hearing the Chev under dunlop bridge in the distance. Man!

I remember a number of Monza shells making their way into dirt track and paved speedway in Australia during the 70s and early-mid 80s. There were a few dirt Super Sedan Monza's running around in SA, WA, the NT, NSW and Victoria while the most famous speedway version was probably Barry Graham's Formula Mirage Grand National that ran on the paved track at Liverpool.

The K&A built Alfa is 5 litre Chev, Briggs Dekeon Monza was 350 as was the Ward Monaro. I think ex Bob Jane.

The Monza and Monaro were actually 6.0L (366 cui) Chev's. The Alfetta was in its first year with the Chev V8 (5 litre) after previously running a less powerful (and cheaper) 5 litre Repco Holden. In 1983 it would be upgraded to the 6.0L V8. Was Ward's Monaro the ex-Jane car or was it Pete Geoghegan's? Briggs later sold the Monza to Lithgow racer Jeff Barnes and in 1984 bought himself the ex-JPS BMW 318i turbo previously raced by Allan Grice and Jim Richards. Not 100% sure but I think Ward later sold the Monaro to Sydney privateer Bob Stevens.

Thanks again for posting these old racing clips. What engine did the V8 Alfa have? Don't think AR ever made a V8 some presumably its borrowed from another car.

The Tony Edmonson Alfa had a chev v8 fitted in it. Saw it race many times when i was a kid and it was quite unbeatable, winning the championship in 80/81.

slugy71 Was at Wanneroo that day in around 1980, when he pulled up and stopped after turning on to the main straight, and then did a burnout to the start line. To this day, the best I've ever seen.

+Mark Dignam this is not a V8 Alfa, but they did build V8 engines E.G. Alfa Romeo Montreal or Alfa Romeo T33 Stradale.

This particular Alfetta (owned by Don Elliot and built by K&A Engineering in Adelaide) started life with an ex-F5000 Repco Holden V8 (1979-80). From 1981-1983 it ran an ex-F5000 5.0L Chev V8 and in mid-1983, as well as being converted from sports sedan to GT specs which among other things meant it could run more streamlined (extra) body work and had its rear tyre side upped from 10 to 19 inches, the 5.0L V8 was replaced by a 6.0L (366 cui) Chev V8 putting out around 600 hp.
