Due to budget cuts in the early 80s, the emergency services in Boston underwent massive layoffs and cut backs. Feeling slighted by the system, some of the emergency service workers came up with a plan to bring the funding back.

I had sympathy for them at first, but when they start setting fires and people are being badly injured and they just kept on going. Nah man, that’s not cool. Not cool at all. I noticed in another video of his about the Ryan Waller incident when he (narrator) mentioned the word GANG he flashed a picture of the rap group NWA, even though the subject of his discussion was a young Latino male who was falsely accused of being involved in a gang. I immediately began wondering if the guy whom this channel belongs to has some subconscious bias...or maybe conscience bias's, because if he went online looking for "gang" images it wouldn't have shown a 34 year old pic of a former rap group. Thanks for adding that tid bit of necessary information.

@@klondikemom3658 One of the most idiotic attempts at a comment I've ever seen. Jimmy Carter, worst POTUS in history prior to Joe Biden, created through his administration's feeble weakness and failed economic policies massive unemployment and even greater inflation accompanied by a near catastrophic fuel shortage. He was weak. Pathetically so. The Islamic Republic of Iran released it's U.S. Department of State hostages on Reagan's inauguration day, not because of some imagined deal that would have been illegal, but because Reagan had stated publicly his intentions of immediately deploying U.S. military assets to shatter the Islamic theocracies nascent hold on power. He was going to sink their navy and flatten their ground assets cutting of their ability to export oil. Game Over, and they knew it. The Reagan Era saw a massive revitalization of The U.S. economy and military. We went from failed state to world dominance in one decade.

This is the exact plot of Backdraft except that John Adcox (Axe; played by Scott Glenn) actually targeted the politicians responsible for passing the budget cuts. Well, that and he somehow staged legit backdrafts that would kill the target but blew itself out so it didn't hurt/kill anyone else. There's no mention of this inspiring the movie, the trivia in IMDB says the screenwriter was inspired by the death of a friend in a backdraft. But still, the similarities are kinda crazy.

Hi This Is Monsters! Thank you for covering this topic!! Can you please look further in depth regarding The Bronx fires in the mid-seventies? My grandfather moved to the Bronx at 7 years old, with his big family from Puerto Rico. He was eventually ready to leave and got a great education in early computer science and married my grandmother around 18. It was around 1977 when they left to middle America for better opportunities to own a home and live more comfortably. I want to ask them more about it soon, if at all they recall anything. I would appreciate your take on this. Thank you.

@@lunarballoonistxo The fires were on a grand scale, blocks and blocks eradicated. The S. Bronx went from Fort Apache to Little House on the Prairie. I worked Lincoln Hospital in 1981. Across the street, behind some single story stores, lay a vast open field with only a small, red brick church in the distance. An area that once had housing for thousands of families. Greed is what set those fires. The laws have been revised since then to help prevent that kind of fraud.

@@lunarballoonistxo The fires were landlord-generated for insurance money and went on for almost 20 years before the laws were changed. IMHO, to have let it go on that long suggests some collusion between state gov't. and big real estate. Even today, the real estate industry is the biggest donor to both major political parties in NY, out-spending even Wall St. Gentrification and the abuses it generates still displaces thousands of people from housing, only the tactics have changed.

Reagan's trickle down turned out to be a golden shower on unions, small businesses and a stampede of corporations closing "expensive" factories. As a twenty something activist, I saw Reagan's election as the conservative dominionists victory. I wasn't wrong. As far as the white guys getting the heave ho, another big reason they were furloughed was their pay packages were much larger and costly to retain. The newbies were entry level and cheap in comparison. Not solely racist but i am sure the Boston blue collar Irish and Italians didn't see it that way. There has always been a ton of racial tensions in that great city Great story.

While listening to the first ten minutes of this, I had a feeling in the back of my mind that I heard this before. And I had. But, oddly enough, from Hollywood. You just set up the political and economic dynamic of the firefighters of the film "Backdraft". Edit: "Axe" (obviously his nickname) is the firefighter setting arsons to prove the city needs to hire more men for the stations as there is not enough and what few of them are getting hurt on the job. So he sets "Backdrafts" as a way for the firefighters to kill off members of the city council who mean to keep withdrawing the city's budget allotted to public safety.

Yeah for devastating hundreds of firefighters lives in the name of…”helping firefighters” and causing over 20 million in damages and hurting others business and livelihoods. They got off way too easy

South Boston has changed so much since then definitely not the same as it was back in the 80's I grew up as a kid in southie moved out to stoneham and a little under 6 years ago decided to move back to my childhood hometown and it was a be shock on how much it has changed beautiful city definitely a great place to visit but the cost of living is very expensive over $1,800 for studio/1 bedroom yikes but still love it! Thank you for doing this one👍

Boston has become gentrified. Southie is no longer southie. The irish diaspora of the past 150 years, has been replaced by the tech crowd. Blue collar workers no longer live in the city-they cant afford to. Boston passed a law that police/firefighters working for the city, had to live within city limits. But, they cannot afford to, sadly. They had to amend the law due to that. Boston used to be an extremely multicultural, beautiful city. It is no longer that. It has become so homogenized, its not recognizeable any more, sadly.

Lots of fires in Boston? Then just defund the fire department obviously. Isn't that the logic of the Boston city council? Lots of crime in city? Simply reduce law enforcement budget by $13 million.

Correction: firebugs light fires. Fire buffs on the other hand are much like train buffs who take an avid interest in trains. Fire buffs take a similar avid interest in firefighting.

The irony of this case is the arsonists had little regard for the damage to the people and the city just as the government was doing the same thing in different more subtle ways...food for thought.

I was in first grade during that election. I remember we had a mock draft in class. The teacher got mad because more people voted for Jimmy Carter then reagan. She then stated "I wish we put people's names on these" and she shook her head and made a face of this thing. I knew at 6 yo exactly what election process was and meant. Nothing. if you don't vote the way the people in charge want you to there's anger and drama. What would she have done if our names were on the ballots?

I grew up on Cape Cod and the early 80s when i was in my teens. My mother worked for the emergency and trauma field as executive to CIEMS, (Cape & Island emergency medical services), where they would train and prepare individuals to become EMTs or Paramedics. Prop 2 1\2 hit us hard at home where my mother was demoted and her company car was taken from her. We almost packed up and head to Boston for better opportunities, but as what you have described here was the main reason we never did. I remember in school that this was a major topic amongst classes and hallways. This Prop 2 1/2 hit hard on a lot of people and then having these asshats making it worse with their agenda just made it all that much harder for the big hearted responders who fought not only fires and trauma but paralyzed many to prosper. Thank you for your stories and the history they have made.

This is what Firefighters call a firebug. It's like with volunteers that are on the volunteer Fire Departments most of them work regularly jobs. So after we would get toned out we would have to take our equipment back to the Department get everything ready to go for the next time. Then we would get ready to go to our jobs weather we had any rest or sleep. We don't get paid on volunteer Fire Departments. But we do take the exact same classes that the Firefighters take who are on call 24/7 or what ever shift that they work. But we don't do it for the pay on volunteer Fire Departments. We do it too help people and I'm proud to say that I have been on 2 Fire Departments that are the greatest in the world. But what people don't understand is that if we get hurt on the job as a volunteer FireFighters then if we can't work then we can't pay our bills. But if you have never seen how the Fire Departments work. Then you should ask a Firefighter how it works then you would have a new respect for them.
