Nationwide reporter Pattie Coldwell joins a group of South Yorkshire residents on a tour around the Council's secret nuclear bunker in Doncaster. The trip has been organised by the leader of the local council, Roy Thwaites - who has been told he'll have a place in the bunker in the event of a nuclear attack - in order to demonstrate how ineffective it is.

I suspect that this is what inspired the scenes in Threads with the civil servants trapped in a bunker dying of starvation after the attack.

I always heard there was a secret tunnel from the public toilets in town all the way to Cusworth Hall! This may be evidence of such a tunnel!

Ah, memories of local councils, assuring people that "(insert council name) IS A NUCLEAR FREE ZONE." I remember asking my dad, at about this time actually, what we should do if the Soviets dropped "the bomb". Dad; Pull up a chair.

I reember Labour's Nuclear-Free Zones. They never did explain how their bold signs woud prevent a nuclear bomb from exploding in the "protected" zones. I always assumed that Labour: a. thought nuclear bombs could read b. believed nuclear bombs would be sufficiently well-mannered to respect polite requests not to explode over or otherwise contaminate self-declared nuclear-free zones. c. were bonkers d. were incapable of understanding that MAD was not about promoting war but about preventing one: speak softly and carry a big stick works far better against any bully from the playground upwards than speak softly but " I can't defend myself if you choose to ignore my soft speaking".

0:16 kid looks bloody terrified. That AWFUL feckin song On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at - I remember as a kid at the posh school I endured (thankfully got only three years) some maniacally smiling posh kid stood up in assembly one morning in the early 80s and sang it. This was a posh school in Guildford Surrey, I might add. It’s like the Americans all Claiming Irish heritage, the monied of Surrey claiming Yorkshire heritage. Nothing like painting yourself white and ducking under a school desk to deflect the 1000 megaton blast 😂
