The Cosworth DFV in Romano's car at this stage of its life was actually one of those used by McLaren drivers John Watson and Alain Prost in the 1980 F1 World Championship. It was literally a former Grand Prix engine. After dominating the 1984 Australian Sports Car Championship, Romano replaced it with a 3.9L Cosworth DFL in late 1984 for the World Sportscar Championship race at Sandown. He used that engine through to the end of its racing life with its massive crash at Amaroo in 1986. Knowing through his Tyrrell contacts that the 3.5L Cosworth DFZ was coming for 1987, Romano had planned to put one in the car the next year which would have given the Veskanda some competition at least. The Kaditcha K583 / Romano WE84 has been fully restored by original Kaditcha owner Barry Lock, Bap still owns it and it does now run the DFZ F1 engine whenever he cares to bring it out.

4 different Kaditcha models in this race. The interloper was Ray Hanger in the blue Rennmax (No.24) with its 1.6L, 4cyl Ford (Cosworth) DBA. 2 x SR781: (Carl Gibson - 3.0L Repco V8 / Paul Scott - 2.0L Cosworth Vega I4) 1 x K580 (Chris Clearihan - 5.0L Chevrolet V8) 1 x K582 (Peter Hopwood - 5.0L Chevrolet V8) 1 x K583 (Bap Romano - 3.0L Cosworth DFV V8) The K582 was later merged (by then owner Clearihan) with a JWS body, but retained its 5.0L Chevy V8. The SR781 of Scott was later sold to Jeff Harris in 1984 and he replaced the Vega with a Mazda 13B rotary. The K583 was completely re-worked into a dominant winner over the 1983-84 off season by ex-F1 mechanic Wayne Eckersley. The car was re-named the Romano WE84 (WE for Wayne Eckersley). It retained the Cosworth DFV into late 1984 when it was swapped out for a 3.9L, 580 bhp Cosworth DFL V8. This was to have changed into its current 3.5L 600 bhp, Cosworth DFZ (ex-F1) in 1987 but for Romano crashing the car at Amaroo Park in 1986. The car has since been re-built for Romano by original Kaditcha owner/builder and the cars original designer, Barry Lock.

Hi there, any chance of locating some 86-87 ASCC rounds with the veskanda?

That was such a dangerous move by Romano...he should have been black flagged for that, and given a fine.

Actually ... Romano and Hopwood were later excluded from the results for their driving antics with each other (they also clashed in the other heat) and Chris Clearihan was declared the winner of both races run that day.

Like father like son with the romanos when it comes to dangerous drivers with too much money I guess. I hope there's no third generation

That move was shocking. Imagine what officials would've done with that now!

That move actually got him DQ'd from the race results. And for good measure, they also DQ'd Hopwood for deliberately running Romano off the road before that. Chris Clearihan was awarded the win.

@@Holden308 Yeah, I think that was bit of payback. Don't know about waving a first at Romano. Peter was all of five feet three and Romano was rather bigger. Clearihan took over the Hopwood Kaditcha and later had it converted to a closed car. He still had it last I knew when I bought a Hewland transmission from him. That was some time ago now I think of it. Clearihan was a real big ex boxer. I found him pretty personable, but I remember an official at Amaroo getting in front of his car and trying to direct him. He leaned out of the car and said ' don't tell me where to f...ing drive - I'll punch your f...ing head in.

This is the comment I came here to make. No ability, tons of money. His sons was no better unsurprisingly. Ego will only get you so far. At least the guy who was behind the Veskanda project had the common sense to put a driver with ability (and respect for others) in the car.

@@wadem4503LOL you 1d1ot. They both could drive. Bernie Van Elsen could also drive. Romano, both Sr and Jr, have more ability in their morning shit than you do in your entire bloodline.
