I forgot how low rent the Armco barriers were, compared to concrete and finally, the safer barriers of today. Looks so small time. And the dirt on the track pre race! Heavens!

Notice: The Ford teams are running year old shoebox 1982 Thunderbirds and Terry Lebonte is not running the Monet Carlo SS nosepiece. Teams ran this and the Bristol race in throw away cars unlike today where nothing is spared. I would love to know what pieces the Kyle Petty 7-Eleven Pontiac team took from a rental car since parts departments at dealerships did not open on weekends at that time. The best race at this track is when Earnhardt hooks DW on the last lap and Kyle Petty wins in the Wood Brothers 7-Eleven Ford.

I'm guessing it might have been the front bumper, front fender, radiator support, etc. I would guess that any of the engine accessories would have been fair game since those cars came with a 305/307 engine that would allow you to swap those items. I wonder more so about whoever rented that car after the race. Did they know that they were driving a half a racecar?

Don't remember Bobby running a Monte Carlo in '83? I remember him in a Buick then and even bought the Revell racecar model of it.

**FACTS BEFORE the 1983 RICHMOND 400** · Several interesting drivers changed rides or numbers. Kyle Petty changed to #7 thanks to sponsorship by 7Eleven. Tim Richmond moved to the new GM #27 BlueMax car (in 1982 that was MC Anderson and Cale Yarborough drove it). Cale himself moved to the GM #28 Ranier car. Buddy Baker went from the #28 to the Ford #21 from the Wood Brothers. Neil Bonnet went from the Wood brothers to the GM #75 from RahMoc. DiGard Racing added a 2nd car: Geoff Bodine drove the typical #88 while Bobby Allison got the new #22. Morgan Shepherd started the season without a proper seat while Jody Ridley moved to a much reduced schedule after leaving the Ford #90 from Donlavey (Richard Brooks got that car). · Cale Yarborough made a last-lap slingshot pass to win the Daytona 500 ahead of Bill Elliott, Buddy Baker and Joe Ruttman. It was a race attrition with a total of FIFTEEN engine-related retirements and some top drivers lost because of non-terminal problems too.. · Many big names failed to make it into the top30 due to early retirements including Bodine, both Pettys, Earnhardt, DW, Gant, Richmond and BP (dead last). · Ricky Rudd and Joe Ruttman got the 1st row at over 93mph.

7:33 That was the first time I ever saw "The King" pose for a race picture with his trademark lit cigar in his mouth. Maybe he didn't have time to take it out of his mouth before they took the picture?........

1:25:52 Cale brings up crashing into a firetruck with a race car. He talked about it in a video with Richard Petty, Benny Parsons, and Darrell Waltrip. They sent him a bill.

2nd race of the year was always there and it was cold as hell sometimes. I was at this one. It was a cool short track but a better 3/4 track now.

Lots of great memories with a great voice calling it. Damn. Its easy to sit back and say 'things aren't like they used to be'. Well, to me, that means things aren't as great as they used to be and thats the case here....and with just about everything else. Id say from '77-'85, everything, and in sport especially, was peak. It just was. Look it up. NASCAR, Pro Bowlers Tour, NFL, MLB....announcers, color analysts...fuck it. It sucks being old, but at least I was alive when the world was awesome 👌

honesly i would say from 1977-1995 as even the 90s had some great racing and announcers during that time

I would love to see the 81’ and 82” runnings of this race and see Allisons misfortunes as well as relive Marcis last win. I thought that Marcis won it in later years but...
@LeoA26005 жыл бұрын
The Marcis win isn't on KZfaq? That surprises me, since it was the only Richmond Fairgrounds race that ESPN Classic ever used to air 15-20 years ago.

It's on here. Just look for 1982 Richmond 400. I thought it was an interesting race. I think in one video Bobby's car was already through the guardrail. You might find a video about 90 minutes long and another about 2 hours long. But they do have them.

@joeyjohnson48263 жыл бұрын
@@travisbrueck9076 which is an overreaction because Dale Earnhardt's helmet had nothing to do with him dying. I still think it's stupid or a full-face helmet car with a full cockpit.... of course if you're on a motorcycle or an open-wheel car that used to be open to the air it makes sense. Remember the Intimidator did not die because of facial laceration. He broke his neck

See how they rig a race, Miller wanted the prestige for this one, never in today's nascar will they bring you in for tires knowing full well that your closest competitor has no intention of stopping...
@cnking274 жыл бұрын
Bud Moore ruined it for Dale by not bringing him in for 4 tires on that last caution. He brought him in late which made him have to fight through traffic and he only put on right sides. It didn't make sense.

Today's NASCAR (and for the rest of time) will NEVER have the magic of races of yesteryear. Racing was to be the first one to complete the race, not an "IROC" series that gives the top 30 a chance to win. A damn shame they ruined it. So GLAD these old races were uploaded so I can re-live the excitement!

nalhcal27031984 I have fantasized that Kulwicki or Trickle had (deservedly) already arrived in NASCAR and drove bright orange “cheesemobiles” or cars white with brown spots representing Wisconsin dairy. Cars would look like blocks of cheese for sure...
@EricCox48484 жыл бұрын
The COT was butt ugly. These cars looked like cars. Bobby's team didn't run the Monte Carlo after Rockingham and ran Buick the rest of the year. For some reason DiGard was denied parts for the Monte Carlos they were running. So it was a one time win for Bobby and the Monte Carlo SS.
