Sylvania VC-2225SL01 manufactured in April, 1983. It's a re-branded Panasonic PV-1220 that was sold under other brands as well (Magnavox, Quasar).
This specfic VCR was bought new by my parents in 1983. It needs cleaning and new idler tires/belts.

I remembered having a top loader VCR I bought at a church yard sale for only $5 back in 2007, and after digging through personal pictures to see what it was, I found this VCR!! That thing was a beast! It was my first ever VCR I recorded on the LP mode, and it was so friggin' satisfying too! It worked when I first got it, although two years later, I accidentally dropped a toothpick when I was in the eject mode and when I got it out of there, the VCR crinkled my tape (weirdly on one side only) and since I didn't know how to fix VCRs at the time, I ended up tossing it unfortunately and got a Magnavox VCR/DVD Recorder to replace it with. Only thing that works on it now is the DVD recorder. Consider that thing lucky it has a digital antenna input so it's still a little bit useful LOL! I miss that Sylvania. Now I got a reason to watch this again ROFL🤣

Very interesting to see this. We had the exact same VCR in the Magnavox variety and I can vividly recall every one of those sounds from my childhood. My parents used to rent videos every weekend.

Right? Those sounds are very distinct and absolutely iconic from my childhood. Also, what originally made me even start this youtube channel is that I wanted to upload the sounds that VCR made in a very short video...and it kinda got out of hand.

The fact that it lasted that long- and was in service all that time is amazing. Did the Sylvania ever break down?

My dad had repaired it a few times - I believe it was all just replacing belts, roughing up the idler tire, and gluing the tension band back together. It definitely got a lot of use over the years (especially by me until I got my own VCR).

I was watching this to see how you got the top off of it, but your video skipped right past that part. I have a Panasonic PV-1220 and I can't get the top off of it. There only seems to be two screws on the back that hold it in place, and after removing them, the right-hand side of the top (the side farthest from the top-loading mechanism) will easily slide back and lift up but the left-hand side will barely move. I can only get it to slide back maybe 1/8" no matter how hard I pull on it, which isn't enough to unlock it from the tabs so you can pull it up to remove it. I've already removed the cover of the top-loading mechanism in case that was somehow interfering, but that didn't make any difference at all.

Panasonic VCRs usually have a few screws on the bottom that hold the top cover in place. Check along the bottom, near the sides.

@@probnotstech My Panasonic PV-1220 VCR is the same as your Sylvania VC-2225SL01, at least that's what it says in your video description. Mine doesn't have any relevant screws on the bottom, does yours? The only screws on the bottom are for holding the bottom cover on, and none of them are long enough to even reach the top cover. I've already removed all of them as well as the bottom cover to see if there was anything under there that was interfering with the removal of the top cover and there's nothing. I said in my previous post that the right-hand side of the top easily slides back and lifts up, and that would be impossible if there were screws on the bottom still holding the top in place. Also, I wouldn't be able to move the left-hand side of the top even the 1/8" that I can move it if there was a screw in the bottom holding it in place.

Hmm I just checked mine and the bottom screws don't attach to the top as I suspected (they must have started doing that in the mid 80s). Just 2 screws on the rear and my cover comes off. Maybe yours is jammed along the little hooks that it slides into.

@@probnotstech "(they must have started doing that in the mid 80s)" Probably. I have a made-by-Panasonic General Electric VG-7720 VCR from 1988 that has two screws in back plus two screws on the bottom that hold the top cover on. The two screws on the bottom double as screws for the bottom cover, and they have arrows pointing to them indicating that those are the ones to remove to get the top cover off. That top cover comes off slick as a smelt. It uses the same style of retaining hooks/tabs that my older Panasonic top-loader does, but nothing is jammed on it. "Maybe yours is jammed along the little hooks that it slides into." That's the only thing I can think of. This is my first time trying to take it apart; I don't know if anyone else has ever taken it apart before or not.

Did you ever get this running again? Where did you pick up the belt kit ?
@probnotstech

I did in a part 2 video. Got the belt kit from Studio Sound Electronics, but I don't think they carry VCR parts anymore. Finding rubber parts is getting real difficult nowadays. There's also SMC Electronics, but they suffer from the same stock issue - no new parts are being made. Part 2: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d62HlqiCpsXWlKM.html

I have the Panasonic PV-1220, The big tire is cracked all over the place. But believe it or not the picture is beautiful at times. The small tire and the other belts look to be in good shape. Sometimes the Rewind, Fast-forward and Play functions will work fine. Other times forget about it. It also seems to depend on certain tapes how it will perform. Also the channel selections will not light up green. I don't know if the LEDs are blown? Or they aren't getting any power? Hopefully with the help of your videos I can get it going again. 🙏
