That's the best sounding exhaust and starter on a 920! I owned a 81 XV920RH. Great engine. Really good job on your custom scooter..

Hi Don - I removed the air filters and have only one carburetor so the inside of the frame where the filters went previously now holds the wiring. I put the fuses under the skull that I have there is a hole there that fits a bunch of wires and fuses. Hope that helps! Cheers, Clint

Hi Tim - I have not done the conversion in a few years so probably not the guy to get yours done. Good luck though and throw me a link to your bike video. would love to see how yours is turning out.

Thanks man! I have made some more mods since that video, added some blacked out rear and side blinkers and a better looking seat on the finder. Still having trouble with the stupid stator though. I did remove the monoshock so the only suspension is on the front forks and the seat springs. It's comfy for me, but not so much for the ladies! :)

I've seen some of the later Viragos that made a nice bobber. The earlier ones, not so much. However, you really pulled it off. Lots of well thought out mods and a great looking machine. So you did go rigid by removing the monoshock ?

Did u buy the single carb mount from searayguy? Also did u eliminate all the wiring from the digital dash n just run the basics? Im just curious, because I have the same bike n Im trying to clean it up a bit. Thanks for all the info.

The cycom system on my 82 920 is what I'd like to take off. Did you have that on yours? It's basically the Speedo and rpm gauge but it's the all in 1. I've heard they're miserable to get off. I just want to put a normal Speedo and rpm gauge on mine. Any tips?

How did you do the hard tail conversion? Also where did you get your battery tray? And now did you conceal all the wiring with the horn cover? I would really like to know what all went into the bike and who did it so I can incorporate some of these amazing idea into mine. I have an 1981 920.

+Anthony Selby Thanks for the compliments Anthony! The hard tail conversion was done by removing the springs and cutting the support rods with a welding cutting torch. The rear fender was found at a cycle salvage yard. I welded it back together and bolted it to the frame. It was actually a simple piece of the project. The battery tray was custom made by t swerske. He was one of the first people to comment on this posting so you can look him up here. He did an awesome job and was great to work with. The wiring was by far the hardest to loop. Yes; all the wiring is behind that horn cover inside the frame where the air box was. All the wire runs through the bike frame from the head light to the horn cover. I removed all "unnecessary" wiring, basically all safety switches were removed to help reduce wires. I hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions. This bike was built by watching lots of youtube videos and LOTS of trial and error. :)

Awesome bike brother... I have an 83 myself... I have a 750 motor in it now but I do have the 920 motor to put in it if I decide to. I have a lot of work ahead of me to get the bike where I want it and I'm not really a mechanic so any tips would help. I know one pain in my rear is remembering to shut off the petcocks when I shut my bike of and we've been able to get the speedometer working but now it won't read my rpms. I had to choose one or the other. Right now it's at a mad max road warrior state but I hope to get it closer to this before summer.

Thanks man! Eva was actually my very first motorcycle project so most of it was trial and error; which is probably why it took almost two years... I actually use a gravity pitcock. When I try to use the carb for suction it makes the bike act weird so I just leave the pitcock on at all times. I'm sure Virago's are a lot like women, there is no one formula that will make them all happy! I took off all my gauges to make it a little more bobberish! Cheers bro!

+Clint Roehr dual carb I let it sit in cleaner for a week blew it out with cleaner put it on started idle on full choke then shut off turned back on revs up fine off choke but won't idle went to put in gear and let off clutch nothing pulled cable tighter still nothing the bike has been sitting since 2005
@ceroehr100
@ceroehr100 8 жыл бұрын
+vinny mcclosky sounds like it might be the pilot jet... if its starting you have spark so the cdi, and ignition coils are working. idel is a carb issue. you need that reloved first. i would take them back off and reclean? did you buy a new kit or are you using the old carb kit? make sure you clean all nooks and crannies of the carb. carbs are a pain! make sure you use a wire,carb cleaner and the air compressor for cleaning.

I like the single carb. Does it effect the bike a lot? I would like to do that to mine.
@ceroehr100
@ceroehr100 8 жыл бұрын
It does effect the bike a lot and I mean a lot. You are basically redesigning the intake. It takes a lot of work to get the jetting correct. It looks super cool though!
@oldowl4290
@oldowl4290 6 жыл бұрын
Are you using one of the original carbs here or one off another bike? I would think that unless the new carb has more intake volume that is at least equal to what two was, that you would loose a lot of power. So what carb did you use and was the result better than using the stock two?

Thanks Sergent. It's been a few years running on one carb now. I'm not sure it makes a huge difference but I have not hooked it up to any machines to see if it actually increased the HP. I think it looks cool and I don't have to continuously sync the carbs. Making the pilots work is also very challenging. I bought a pack of 10 pilots and just kept drilling different size holes and riding to see how the bike reacted. If you know of or have access to a machine that can tell you the gas to air mixture I would like to hear about it. Thanks again for the comment!

how is the single carb conversion doing now? I'm debating going single on my 82 xv750. would you recommend it?
@ceroehr100
@ceroehr100 8 жыл бұрын
The carb conversation is fine. After I got the jet and needle synced up correctly it hasn't caused me any issues. my biggest issue is still that stupid starter clutch. when the bike is hot after a ride it still takes three or four times to start. That being said, I am not sure I would recommend doing the conversion if it's a commuter bike. If it's for show and tooling around id say go for it! It looks pretty cool but the pipe needs a mathematical resistance to perform well since the air and gas flow have completely changed.

i have the same virago with a bpi intake and i cant get the jetting right can you let me know what jets your using maybe it will get me closer to right thanks lots
@ceroehr100
@ceroehr100 8 жыл бұрын
+Bo Turley To be honest Bo I'm not sure my jetting is right either. What I did was buy a back of six stock rear jets and drilled out each one and made adjustments to the needle until it worked. Keep a close eye on your plugs and adjust accordingly.... I know that's not much help but that conversion is a huge deal and the Yamaha techs are no help because there are no specs for a single carb conversion ratio.

How did you get rid of all of the electronics in front and make the bike run?
@ceroehr100
@ceroehr100 9 жыл бұрын
The bike just has to make a full loop of wiring. you can remove all of the non-needed electronics pretty easily if you follow the schematic in your book. However I did have one of my buddies who is an electrician confirm the project so I didn't blow anything up! :)

Clint Roehr Ok I have been looking and found lots of things. I just bought a virago. Was yours by any chance a model with the Cycom?
@ceroehr100
@ceroehr100 9 жыл бұрын
timothy fleenor I don't know what a cycom is, can you tell me what it is? Hopefully you did not buy an 81, 82 or 83... the 84 and beyond moved away from the starter clutch. It's by far the worst thing about this motorcycle.
@itsawsome1234

What did you use to shim the carb needle??
@ceroehr100
@ceroehr100 5 жыл бұрын
There should be a notch on the needle with a metal washer to move up and down. The size of hole you put in the jet will determine how low or high the needle should sit. The higher the needle the more gas will enter the carb, it's a balancing act that took a dozen trys for me to get right (I still don't think it's as good as it should be). There is not way to measure the gas, air ratio besides how you bike reacts. You need to keep a very close eye on your spark plugs when playing with the needles. If the plugs are bright white there is not enough gas, if they are black there is too much gas... Each time you make a change ride it for a few miles then pull your spark plugs. Check out the video I have on the carb adjustments. It shows the needle washer.

@ceroehr100
@ceroehr100 10 жыл бұрын
Hi David - Sorry for the delay in response. I actually didn't measure the size of the jet, I drilled it out with a drill bit that was slightly larger to give it more gas. due to it going from two carbs to one carb I don't think there is an exact size that would work better. I just knew it needed more gas and air. Hope that helps! Good luck!

@ceroehr100
@ceroehr100 10 жыл бұрын
David Blevins I have read that using the stock carbs is better than buying new carbs. My bike is sucking down gas like crazy so I might need to re-think the needle placement and jet size here soon.
@ceroehr100
@ceroehr100 9 жыл бұрын
David Blevins I have been doing more research on how the carb and exhaust are set up. I'm ran into a problem now that when the bike is hot and I throttle the RPM's the bike idles really high after I let go of the throttle. I am now going to try a Dynojet stage three jet kit and we will see how that goes. I'll have that video uploaded in the next few weeks to see if it fixes the issue.
