I remember when these first came out. You couldn't help but look at it. It's one of those designs that was so different and appealing. The car just commands attention.

I also remember the debut of this car. The owners said that they would count the thumbs up compared to the thumbs down. Single digits were ignored 😂

Amazing that Cadillac still had to use so many shims to put their car together.I restored a 65 and couldn't believe how many ships there was on the car.

This car not only has the beautiful two-tone paint scheme which was offered but it has the very very rare Touring Suspension option too. Very few of these cars were ordered with that upgraded suspension. Probably because the average age of a Cadillac buyer back then was 71 so few wanted the car to handle better versus the cushy ride. To be honest, i don't see many of these driving around anymore and i think it has to be due to the fact that many were junked early in life due to the HT4100 shortcomings.

I wonder how many were replaced with 4.5s, 4.9s and Olds 307s. It would have behooved GM to offer, without a lot of fanfare, a different V8 as a choice when these were replaced under warranty.

The 75 to 79 Seville was my favorite... with the 350 V8 Gas ⛽️ engine. The 92 Seville that my parents owned was an elegant design as well.

Front looks much better than first generation you can tell it's a Cadillac. And it must be nice to have cars that You've designed so cool mr. Kady bought them to have in his collection.

I think this iteration of the Seville has an elegance and upscale aura that Cadillac never again matched with either the Seville or Eldorado.

In 1985, I bought a new Eldorado. It was black with a camel cloth interior and no vinyl roof. It cost $23,500. I purchased and used it in Queens, NY. Back then, stealing front bumpers was a big thing, sort of like catalytic converters today so the dealer welded the front bumper bolts and I never had a problem. In the winter, the wire wheels would get pretty nasty and the only way to really clean them was to remove them and run them through the dishwasher. I washed it in the underground garage of my apartment building. It never saw a car wash. That car had the HT4100 V8 with a big 150 hp. It wasn’t very quick but would cruise up the NY State Thruway at an easy 90-100 mph with no issues at all. What a beautiful car. I was single and 34 at the time.

As a young teenager, I remember my neighbor few houses down owning a similar two tone Seville. The car stirred up my imagination then and why, as a 54 year old man, I purchased another classic, my 2011 Maybach 57s.

I was just knee-high to a grasshopper when this came out, so I didn't appreciate it then . . . but I appreciate it now. Such a daring, yet stately design. The bustle back and the A-pillar crease are wild! And those features! Wayne and Cadillac are amazing.

My dad had a 1984 Eldorado. The interior is almost identical, especially the dash, except his was burgundy. The door panels were different, but it had the same door handle that would have looked good if it hadn't had that giant exposed screw. Dad's didn't have the owner's manual and I didn't have the Internet to learn about the diagnostic mode, which I would have loved then and now. I don't think the fuel economy/trip computer worked right because we could only get it to show the instant MPG. It was one of the vehicles I learned to drive in and I loved the fiber-optic tattle-tales on the fenders and the ones for the brake lights above the rear window (you could see them in the rear-view mirror). I miss the cornering lights and wish more cars still had them. The trunk is amazing; the spare tire can even stand straight up. In the Eldo, it was angled back because it couldn't stand up under the parcel shelf and I always (even as a kid) thought it wasted space.

These have aged well. I can't fault the design. They are pretty in two-tone. The interior was very nicely done. This was a really great video, to have Wayne go through his own car in this way. Thank you, Adam.

I currently have a 1980 Seville Elegante 5.7 gas in the same color combo (just reversed. black on bottom, silver on top) I much prefer Mr. Kady's interior to mine. I always liked the tufted interiors. I also wish I had touring suspension. As much as I love my Seville I have never gotten used to the floaty, cushy feel it has. Anyway hats off to Mr Kady I can't go to the grocery store or even put gas in my tank without someone complimenting the car, or it sparking some type of conversation.

ALways loved this 2 tone Black over Silver on the Sevilles. I remember all the fuss when this style came out and I thought finally a car in the 80’s that has some real class about it. The Lincoln Mark VI coupes didn’t do it for me. Chrysler only knew 1 letter “K” for and continued to shrink the New Yorker making it look cheaper, and cheaper. But the Bustle Back Seville and Eldorado’s still had Class.

I live in Spain, and when that car debuted, a very rich neighbour, the owner of a big paper/cardboard company named SAICA, had lots of cars, and the one that he used most was a Seville like that, of course chauffered. I loved that car! 😍😍

That is a great looking and well preserved Seville! I have always liked the unique design of this Seville. Sadly, I missed a recent opportunity to buy a diesel powered 1982 Seville D'Elegance in near perfect condition. I’m still kicking myself. I owned a white on red 1981 Eldorado Biarritz with the V8-6-4; never had an issue with the cylinder deactivation. I still miss that car. Despite the reputation of American malaise era cars, I believe Cadillac designers still did an excellent job with the Seville and Eldorado.

The diesel was really good by 1982, my parents had a good 81 Riviera diesel and mom drove it for years but getting parts for the diesel because a problem, and she finally after 20 years replaced it

I left out something on my comment, about 2000 the car was going to need new glow plugs and the part was not locally stocked and Mom was afraid part's were going to be a problem, so she bought a used Cadillac Seville SLS, she figured at 78 year's old she didn't need a new car she would never wear out

I saw a Hooper body Rolls on the freeway in LA and was completely taken with the bustleback, so when this debuted I was already a fan. I had friends with these cars, and my favorite by far was this color combination. Very elegant.

12:18 I love that vertical spare; such a relief from the fragmented trunks of the 1970s, and you might even be able to get it out without completely emptying the trunk the way you have to on most current cars.

From Australia , thanks guys , I watched part one , then noted on the screen that this second one became available to watch , so watched both episodes . It's a shame that the 2 big petrol engines from the 1980 year were not offered every year as the survival rate of these great cars would have been way, way higher. GM Holden here in Australia brought them into the country as unfinished cars , tooled up and made all the RHD equipment and RHD dashboards. These FWD Sevilles were sold in limited numbers at selected GM dealerships. So in 1980 we received both a 350 ci California spec engine ( i guess an oldsmobile like in the '76 to '79 models) and a debored Big Block Caddy 368cube 6litre engine. To eliminate any warranty issues, GMH-A made all 1981 468 cylinder deactivation engines run on 8 cylinders permanently whether on RWD Fleetwood Brougham or a FWD Seville, after a short while in 1982 Aussie Cadillacs were no more , a GM Holden dealer said that even as a new car the HT4100's were a nightmare so GMH-A management canned them from their range . Interestingly from 1980 to 1985 for 6 model years GMH-A made what was basically a "homegrown" Cadillac , the WB Holden Statesman Caprice, 80/82 was the series 1 , 83/85 series 2. In 1971 Holden Introduced the new HQ Statesman range, available in 2 models the basic Custom , and an upmarket de Ville version, thru to mid 1974 . Then came the new HJ versions which introduce the first ultimate "Caprice" range topping version, followed by a HX, HZ & SL/E updates as years rolled on. To look at these are like a smaller "baby brother" to a big rear wheel drive 1971 /72 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. However the body style after a decade needed a freshen up. the new WB' of 1980 , a MAJOR change. Leo Pruneau the GM designer tasked with the make over really went way way upmarket with the premium Caprice version creating a car longer that the Seville . WB Caprice's were to sell for maybe $10,000 more than the prior Caprice the final desiign had both an American and European look and feel to the car with a rich quality premium interior, French Marshal big rectangular Euro style headlights, a burnished aluminium grill made to the same exacting standards as a Rolls Royce one. Plus these WB Caprices shared many Cadillac division components right throughout the car, eg ABS brake system, power window lifts, electric door locking mechanisms. the complete whole Caddy' cruise control system, even the red and cream door illumination lights and modules , same with all internal lighting, as well. However , the big Holden's seats were way way more expensive than any of the Cadillac ones , Holden had bought elaborate German, Scheele front high backed leather bucket seats & twin rear leather bucket seats as well. I bought a brand new GM Holden Caprice in 1980 , then updated it with another , that I still own now 40years later in 2022. Was interesting that GMH-A had 3 similarly priced luxury cars all in dealers at the same time in the early 1980's, the WB versions of the big Aussie Statesman's had 2 chassis , a front 2/3'rds one and a rear 50% one so they went past one another, strange , instead of having one complete front to rear chassis to which the body bolts on, so even on that tack , all 3 were full body on chassis cars. I also own both a RHD GMH-A 1972 & 1974 pair of Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham's so it is interesting to see all the shared Cadillac componentry in my big WB Holden Statesman Caprice. ..

My Dad worked for Cadillac for over 40 years, not sure if you knew him Mr. Kady. Mom & Dad came to visit me in 1982 when I worked in San Francisco. Cadillac had an 82' Seville waiting for him when they arrived. We did the 17 mile drive in Carmel, and I felt so cool as my Dad let me drive. My only disappointment was that I couldn't shake the Rolls Royce that followed us all the way! lol

@@klwthe3rd I do recall it was 2 tone, and believe it was Bronze. I'm not sure who hooked Dad up with the loaner, but recall he got a chuckle that they thought he was a Vice President. Perhaps a local dealership?

I don't know whether anyone noticed it but the Seville script is missing from the front fender. From 1981 to 1985 it was located just aft of the cornering lamp lens. The decklid badging of Touring Suspension plaque and Seville script have also been relocated from their original positions.

That was very cool to hear from the man himself behind such a beautifully striking automobile. I was a valet in my teens one summer and got to drive a few of these. Always a unneeded lap around the garage to find that perfect parking spot of course. The Cadillacs just had a special feel and smell to them. It screamed, "I have arrived", (now park my) car

I like the inverse paint scheme. The black-over-silver color looks very rich. This body style still looks beautiful and unique in 2022. Having said that, we probably won't see anything like this for a long long time, if ever again, as today's style is the 'aerodynamic blob' that has been pre-creased to look like they have been in a bad accident😂

It amazes me to this day that this design was actually made. It is so elegant, so well done. I know a lot of people hate this design, and I can never understand why that is. (This is where people on both sides of the design debate dismiss each other with "There's just no accounting for taste!") 🙂 Anyway, this particular car is beautiful, and it makes my heart glad that the designer has such a great example for himself.

My '84 I bought someone put one of those faux RR grilles on. OMG what were they thinking. I had to use the '80 front end chrome trim to cover the hole they drilled into the front header for the hood ornament. The 2 tone Elegante's looked the best. Mine is 2 tone with a blue vinyl abriolet roof and the lower is a sand grey which looks more like a creme color. Blue velour tufted seat interior.

Tons of those optional E&G grilles were added to these cars and i have to agree that to me, they looked ugly as sin. But as you mentioned, when installed, they would drill into the sheetmetal so you were atleast lucky to be able to cover it up with the 1980-1981 chrome header bar.

@@klwthe3rd It was the hood that had the 3/4 inch hole. Also the E&G hood chrome wrapped up over the hood and I could see a paint color difference. No fading under the chrome. I may have the car repainted.

At the time I didn't think too much of the design. Now I find it quite attractive. Wayne and you, Adam, bring the car alive. Thanks. I have the memory of my new bride's godfather and his wife tooling away from our modest home in St. Paul after dinner in their yellow Seville. "Uncle Jake" was Alan Jacobsen, CEO of 3M Company at that time and an old and dear friend of my wife's family. That was their personal car.

Adam, your plethora of knowledge of these cars and MANY cars astounds me. I don't know how old you are ( I have a feeling you're older than you look) but for a someone your age it blows me away. I'm 47 and consider myself to have a very broad knowledge of lots of cars but no way close to yours.

Another great video. The Delco GM/Bose sound system is easily identifiable by its silver faced head unit - all others were simply black. It was a $1600 option back in the day (over $4500 in today's dollars).

Absolutely right about the Bose radios having silver face units. As you mentioned it was a super expensive option back then. My guess would be only 10% of the cars were ordered with that option.

To your question to Wayne @15:30 about the redesigned spoked wheel covers, I'd read GM actually redesigned them for aerodynamics -bringing the center of the cap towards the vehicle for fuel efficiency. The old style apparently stuck out too far against the wind! I always thought the older ones looked better though, good luck finding either style nowadays -$300+ in good condition🙂

Not sure if believe it. The 85 Deville was the first Caddy that really went through aero testing.

@@RareClassicCars A family friend had a 1979 Eldorado with wire wheel covers. They protruded so much that he couldn't send it through an automatic car wash line.

We had an 81 Seville with the 864 engine in the 1990s. Dark blue over light blue. It was wonderful and we got it because of the rear end design. And even though the tail was the famous aspect of the design, the car got many comments on the elegant looking front too. I loved the distinct noise of the starter. It had the wire hubcaps, but I really liked the turbine vane wheels too.

I like the inverse color. I think it looks better this way instead of the silver over black.

I had a 1984 Eldorado Biarritz...basically same interior black on Black ...wire wheels with the red center cap ...cosmetically a beautiful car. Shined up real nice. Mechanically it ate fuel pumps. Starters and transmissions. I sold to a scrap yard for $1,600. Many years ago...miss it though

I remember when these first came out, I thought they were quite unique. I loved everything about them. I remember the first job I had while I was in high school was at a ladies clothing store in Birmingham MI. One of the girls I worked with, her father was with G.M., and he dropped her off in a new Seville at the time. One day, her dad was driving a different Cadillac. I asked why the switch. She told me her mother was driving the Seville, and a girl driving home from school plowed into them. The Seville was totaled. Her mom was very upset and yelled at the girl “you just totaled a $20,000.00 car!”. All these years I wondered if that price was correct, and you confirmed it with your video. Another time I was watching t.v., they were covering Princess Diana arriving in Canada. They sent a new Seville with a chauffeur, she exited the car with ease and made the Seville even more elegant.

I always admired these for that great interior, and the distinctive exterior (fan of the bustle!) but despaired the mechanicals.

From Australia , we received the first 3 years worth in low numbers . The bullet proof year to buy is 1980 . There are TWO petrol engine options the 49 stated debored 368 cube inch Big Block Cadillac engine was prior the 8 litre engine , now 6 litre engine, OR , for California there was a 350 cube, 5.7 litre engine , which I believe is the same Oldsmobile engine as fitted to the earlier 1976, 77, 78, 79 Sevilles. After this doesn't matter whether it's a HT4100 , or one of the "weirdo" 468 random fire cylinder deactivation engines they will all give trouble, I have been in the Aussie Cadillac club now for 40 years and for 40 years , ever since new I have witnessed owners despair when one of the engines from the five horrible years breaks no matter what Cadillac it is in , rear wheel , or front wheel drive. The only good year for the Bustle back Seville was its first year 1980 and even then, I'd go with the big block Caddy 368 cube, 6litre engine. I have a mate who now lives in Brisbane , he has 2 Sevilles , a rare RWD 1979 Gucci version in white with a Gucci Tan vinyl roof his low mileage weekend car , plus he has a nice 2 tone 1980 Elegante in sand beige and bronze metallic paint , which has the original debored big block Caddy 6 litre V8 with 384,000miles!!! on it and still going strong!! As this "light weight" car has the same running gear as the heavyweight giant 1968 to 1978 FWD Eldorado's that in 1980 was fitted into a car that is well over half a tonne lighter .

I’d love to see a traditional full sized sedan Cadillac before they go ev. Don’t need crazy HP, but sufficient always worked for Cadillac. A retro 50’s looking Cadillac would really be nice

The early 80s Eldorado this style Seville & any Fleetwood/Brougham were the three most beautiful cadillacs of that decade
