The fact that you guys and the Speedway collectively have put up the old ABC broadcasts in their ENTIRETY including intros/pre-race/race/post-race makes me so happy. Makes up for the years of 2-hour (90 minute) condensed ESPN Classic versions we all watched every year.
@GoldPicard
@GoldPicard 4 жыл бұрын
Not only that, but I do HOPE Liberty Media is looking at what you guys are doing and maybe do something similar with their historic achieves. Now if only F1 can get more coverage here in the US than we can do something to start to address that problem.
@ILSRWY4

This is actually NOT "their ENTIRETY" broadcast. During this 1984 broadcast there was a piece done by ABC's Ray Gandolf about his "off the track" story about the little big-wheel 500. A piece about children. I have the whole broadcast recording on VHS. Its omitted in this upload.

I always thought the March 84C was the peak of design evolution for this era of champ cars (yes I call them "champ cars"). In fact, it would be a great design today if they could somehow eliminate the exposure of the driver's feet to injury.

I always enjoy watching this particular broadcast. My mom went into labor with me the day before while at the 500 parade. She drove herself to the hospital after it was over. It’s funny to me to think that while this was going on, I was just down the road, a few hours old.

I sat in the inside of the track on Pit Row with a group of STP employees. When the STP car driven by Johncock touched the 4th turn wall and spun toward the pits, a woman sitting next to me jumped up, grabbed my arm, cutting me with her fingernails, and knocked me off my seat. The bleachers were concrete, and I fell against the seat in front of me, scraping my shins. I did get a lot of free STP stuff. Ah! The memories! That year I was able to be in Indy for the whole month of May.

Jim McKay opened the telecast live, even though the race was on tape, because his commentary of the middle of the race was done as the edited tape was being broadcast. His commentary of the start, the first few laps, the last few laps, and the finish were done as they happened. Since the telecast was taped and edited (for showing that same evening), it was just better to do it that way.

Funny thing about Jackie's seat belt segment and how race drivers insisted on them: Growing up in the late 1960s in southern California, my parents became friends with several race drivers, and they were all religious (as in "I'm not starting the car until everybody is buckled in") about seat belt usage. They convinced my parents, and as a result, I don't remember a time when I didn't wear them. The only time I ever did was when I bought my first car, which didn't come with them (although it did have the mounting points). I stopped at an auto parts store on the way home after buying the car and bought a set of belts and installed them that afternoon. It just didn't feel comfortable being in a car without them.

It was only when ABC had new management that recognized how stodgy the delayed tape broadcasts were in an age where full coverage live broadcasts had become the norm on ESPN that they pushed for a new deal to air the race live starting in 1986.

I'm Australian. I really didn't like Indy in the 1970s. Wasn't a fan of the Unsers. Could never stand A.J. Foyt. I was on the fence about people like Johnny Rutherford and Gordon Johncock. Then the 1980s happened and along came Rick Mears, Tom Sneva, Bobby Rahal, Danny Sullivan and even Kevin Cogan and it all changed. These were guys I really enjoyed watching and guys I thought could have made it in any category, including F1. And the arrival of the Cosworth DFX and ground effect meant that the cars looked and sounded better than ever and the category started attracting top drivers, like Emerson Fittipaldi. My enjoyment of this category continued right up to the split.

I've seen numbers in the 120 to 140 mph range on pit lane from news articles in that era. 1992 was the first attempt at a speed limit in pit lane and it was 100 mph. However, I remember reading somewhere that it could not be enforced that year because of a failure in the timing equipment. I believe that Raul Boesel was the first to be penalized with a pit road speeding violation in 1993. Al Unser Jr. and several others were penalized in 1994 race. It remained at 100 mph into the early 2000's. At some point (2004?) they built a push button operated pit lane speed limiter into the Engine Management System electronics and it dropped to 60 mph I believe.

Al Holbert did indeed finish 4th...suspicious or a cheeky little dig at the fact the race wasn't broadcast live?
@cjs83172
@cjs83172 10 ай бұрын
Probably a little bit of both, but unlike a lot of the road racers that came to Indianapolis during that period, Holbert did have experience running on speedways, as he'd driven some NASCAR races for long-time campaigner James Hylton in 1978, including the Daytona 500 and had a 7th or 8th-place finish at Darlington, and Holbert was driving for the team that Pancho Carter won the 1981 Michigan 500 with, as well as have his career-best Indy finish of third with in 1982. Johnny Rutherford would later grab his final two victories driving for that same team, so that was a more than competent team Holbert was driving for. Picking him to finish as high as fourth (and he ran as high as third late) might have been a bit presumptuous in a field as stacked as that '84 Indy field was, but he did have experience on high-speed ovals and his team was a team capable of running up front under the right circumstances.
@michaelrose1466

Very suspicious considering Posey did not pick who would finish 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, but could say with bold and even arrogant confidence that Holbert would finish 4th. It's like he wanted to show everyone how smart he is without spoiling who the winner was.

Indy cars were really cool looking in the 80s.. they weren't nearly as safe as today, but they are waaay better looking. Nowadays they are just plain ugly.

Jim Mckay had no clue what he was talking about when it came to auto racing. There is no boost in horsepower when drafting another car, the advantage is in aerodynamics. Cant believe he covered the 500 as long as he did with his limited knowelge of auto racing.

McKay was ABC’s #1 sports correspondent so if it was a big event (Indy, Olympics, Kentucky Derby) McKay was there. Kind of like how NBC uses Mike Tirico or how CBS uses Jim Nantz at big events they cover. In 1984 networks used the top correspondent as their lead PBP, only in the last 15-20 years did networks realize “racing guys” (i.e. Leigh Diffey, NBC; Mike Joy, Fox; Paul Page, ABC) were much better and more knowledgeable. I agree, Jim McKay wasn’t good at calling racing, and I think he knew it but he was ABC Sports most recognizable personality.

Man, Jim McKay's broadcasts were always so awful. "Everyone apparently safely started..." As we look at Tom Sneva, the pole sitter, clearly not started...
