I used Dupil Color semi gloss black engine paint. I glass beaded the cases first, no varnish.

What effect would worn crank seals have on an 83 yz mine sputters and back fires when warm videos on my page also do the engine need splitting to replace them

Sounds like you need new crank seals, you are getting a air leak. The left side can be changed with out splitting the cases but the right(clutch side) will be hard to get out. You might be able to pull it out with a pick, make sure not to scratch the case. On the left side make a small hole in the seal and thread a screw into it and pull it out.

I see this all the time. Guys hammering in bearings like that if you heat the case hot enough that bearing well just drop right in plus if you properly drop it in without hammering on it you'll know it's good and seated rather than relying on excessive force to seat it which could damage the bearing resulting in a shorter life span. More heat and and infrared temp gauge to roughly 320°f and the bearing in the freezer for about 20 min is all you need.
