1985 Donegal Rally

It's been a while since I have posted a Classic piece of Rally Footage on here so here goes with another Classic from the 1985 Donegal Rally and what a ding dong affair this Event turned out to be between the 2 great Rivals of Irish Rallying Billy Coleman in the Rothmans Porsche 911 and Austin McHale in the DOTI Manta 400,the Event marked the debut of the Metro 6R4 on Irish Soil with Tony Pond at the wheel and the Car set a blistering pace with it being up to 2 sec a mile faster than any other Car competing but a blown Engine early in the Event ended its challenge,Bertie Fisher was another early retirement following back axle failure and Billy Coleman trailed Austin McHale who was in great form by over 40 sec,Coleman had some Mechanical issues and was off the road as well giving McHale a comfortable lead but Billy really turned on the pressure over the second half of the Event in particular to close down the gap down to just under 40 sec going into the last day,in the end Coleman drove like a man possessed on he final day to clinch a Famous Victory by just 1 sec helped by an overshoot for McHale towards the end of the Rally,Opels made up the remaining positions in the Top 5 with Cyril Bolton 3rd overall in his Manta followed by Phil Colliins in a similar Car with Vincent Bonner making up the Top 5 in his Opel Ascona 400,the RTE/UTV Production captured great action on an action packed Event and we thank Pat Sullivan Carrignavar for the use of this grea Footage,Enjoy.

That was my first rally to attend , I just left my house without telling anyone as a 12 year old and went hitching a lift to the event , which was taking place about an hours drive away , thankfully I got a lift by like minded rally fans who looked after me all day and left me.home safe after the most thrilling day I'll never forget ,

Plum Tyndall🎥👍 told the storey again so well. he really added so much to Them Videos, and in Rallying in the Golden years👏....We saw Billy on full trottle for most of that Rally...he won most of his rallys never having to go all out...but that one yes Great day for Porsche too...Billy hit a rock on Atlantic drive stage early on day 2 all ready 40 seconds in Arrears Emergency repairs were needed to Sort the Steering. .Billy Rejoined the Rally for the nx stage dropping approx 3 minutes and was running late on the Seeding order, Quite nomal for rally crews..for some 3 stages until first service on Saturday morning. ..there was accusation's that Billy & Ronan deliberately Stayed out of Reach of Austin & Christy to Conceal some brilliant times, that the Porsche crew set, but also Austin left the restart on Saturday with the Engine not running which carries a 30 seconds penalty' which was not imposed by officials, ...But Billy managed to take back a minute in 3 stages, the Rest of Saturday and Sunday Billy kept setting fastest time all the way...the Comeback was Sensational 👑👑👑...Pond did lead by over a minute but Billy Had no Sump guard for part of friday, and the engine was oiling a plug for several stages on Saturday, after the Atlantic drive incident Coleman totally dominated the stage times to the finish to win it by 1 second, it was hard on Austin , 2 seconds the other way and it was Austins one wonders what would have happened if it was all even? ...so to win that rally was some achievement by Billy and Ronan👑👑👑@pat Sullivan 📼 videos 📹 Cork
