I pulled a fast one on my local bookie right after he crossed the line. He was slow to change the Derby ante post prices on the board so I stuck a tenner on him at 16/1 to win the Derby. I was flat broke when Derby day came around and that £160 was a life saver.

Those were the days when Lingfield was a joy to go and watch racing - no dirt BS on the inside - a good proper turf track only !

Graham Harvey yeah Kempton and Newcastle lost their turf flat tracks all together. No Substitute for turf in my opinion

Slip Anchor was so underrated ... He is one of the best horses of the last 50 years ... doubt any horse could have beaten him that day at Lingfield and later in the Derby

This is superb, I've only seen the head on part commentary from the racing year 1985 video, presented by Brough Scott. If Slip Anchor had remained free from injury I'm sure he would have won many more races

Actually it's Jimmy Lindley not Richard Linley. The latter who you mention rode a lot of Sheikh Ali Abu Khamsin's horses in the 1980's - Gaye Brief, Half Free, Fifty Dollars More et al.

@@MEECHIO that's correct Jimmy lindley a flat jockey , and Richard linley a jump jockey who was great to offer advice to stable lads about how to ride horses correctly.

In my opinion the 70s and 80s were the two best decades in horse racing. The 85 LingField and Epsom Derby was the easiest of a winner you’ll ever see in a horse race. Just absolutely a monster performance. Cauthen was just magical. Came back and did the same thing two years later on Reference Point.

I remember this day I was in Catford on a course I went into a betting shop to watch the race I saw Slip Anchor was odds on to win the race so checked the Derby price he was 16/1 so I had a £10 bet on it for the Derby at that price... I went to the Derby that year to watch him run...Won easier than he won this race Happy days

I was there that day i had already backed him at 20/1 to win the Derby told my friend to come with me as i had a sure fire winner. If i remember right he was offered at 8/1 after this race to win the Derby sorry to say i did not have a press up. Since that day i have won a lot of money betting on horses the bookies no longer will take my bets.
