Yep once the clear coat goes you have to repaint it. This one is a single stage paint ;)

@@woodsandbarclay Mercedes-Benz had an issue with the metallics in the 80s and early 90s where you'd get this checking/crow's feet pattern in the paint, even on garage kept cars. That's what this one had, personally I would have just kept it that way and avoid completely removing and reinstalling all the trim, door handles, etc. since that stuff never goes on like the factory put it. I had a 190E with the same problem and you can't even see the little cracks from more than a few feet away. I'm not talking about clear coat burn through, like from sun damage.

That typically does not happen on the garage kept vehicles we have had dozens of metallic paint cars at the shop. That usually happens in extreme climates where it gets very hot and very cold like the Northeast United States. Clear coat will expand and contract and slowly crack and it looks like small sandpaper marks all over the paint.

@@woodsandbarclay What you say makes sense. After all, it doesn't seem like the paint would crack if it was truly well kept. Perhaps the paint cracking thing is just something sellers say. : )

​Don't get me wrong some clear coat does have issues you definitely have to watch for that before buying one of the metallic clear coat cars. Just always inspect them in person first to make sure it's the clear coat is in good shape ans the car has been treated well​ @@verdict1163

That's what happens with all classic cars eventually the original manufacturer stops supporting them and the aftermarket steps up. Keep in mind Mercedes never actually made any parts they just designed cars and assembled parts. Most of the companies that actually made the parts for Mercedes are still in business and all the parts are readily available. The aftermarket is already producing many of the parts that we can no longer get through Mercedes and the quality is really good. We already saw this process with classic muscle cars of the 60s. Today you can buy every single nut in bolt and build a muscle car from scratch. Old stock parts are still readily available on eBay or other marketplaces. So don't let it worry you 😉
