Sorry I haven't watched this video in a long time but if you're talking about the small cube shaped solenoids behind the climate control unit you can just hook 12 volt power to them and if you hear them click they are working. Once installed back in the car you test them by pressing the buttons on your climate control unit and all your vents and flaps should open and close correctly.

Everything on such immaculate 10k condition and that ball joint boot was so badly failed? Weird. Nice work!
@woodsandbarclay4 күн бұрын
Not weird at all I've seen many many extremely low mileage vehicles and the ball joint boots almost always deteriorate. The ball joint boot is a very large thin piece of rubber that twists back and forth every time you turn the steering wheel. It almost always fails with age.
@lbowsk5 күн бұрын
Just did mine. Thanks for the vid! Coupla things.... The plastic backing for the C pillar is quite brittle. Broke one of the little flanges clean off. Stuck it back on with some fiberglass cloth. Will know tomorrow if it worked. Be careful with that panel. Be very careful with the trim piece that lives between the seat belts and the rear side window. That valance or something or other. The flat piece wants to pull free from the door panel and that can cause you some grief. The middle screw for the seat back is up about 8 inches above the lower edge, unlike the two outer screws. I guess mine weren't too bad becasue I only picked up a little bit of speed on the windows. But, the actuators appear stout (I have read that some BEND in the absence of grease) and I'll sleep better knowing that this work is done.
@woodsandbarclay5 күн бұрын
Yes it's all very fragile and disassembly is the most dangerous part. It takes a very delicate hand. Lubrication is critical for they will bend where the arm attaches to the window.

When you added the first 2oz of oil off camera, did you add it through the service line? (car running, compressor engaged?) Or did you prefill elsewhere? This whole video has been super helpful and helped give me the confidence to tackle this project myself!
@woodsandbarclay5 күн бұрын
If I remember correctly the system was under vacuum and I added it into the high pressure service port with the car NOT running.
@ricochetx5 күн бұрын
@@woodsandbarclay That makes sense, as we wouldn’t want to run the compressor with at least some oil in first. Did you have to pressurize that injector tool to get the first 2oz in? (With freon? Nitrogen?)
@ricochetx5 күн бұрын
Oh wait, the system would still have residual vacuum when we add the oil. I suppose that's what sucks it in, right? Injector tool won't allow air to flow in as well?
@woodsandbarclay5 күн бұрын
No you don't pressurize the injection tool you first put the entire AC system under a vacuum. Then when you connect your oil injector the vacuum will make it easy and suck in the oil on the high pressure port. You can then put the rest of the oil in on the low pressure port when the car is running and AC is on. I usually put a couple of cans of refrigerant in and then add the last bit of oil. Just make sure you never turn on the AC when you're connected to the high pressure port. That could cause your injection canister or r134 canister to explode.@ricochetx

Always love these in depth videos. That 300D is a stunner and I expect it will become a garage queen. With those low miles, that's just fine. For higher mileage cars that will have constant use go with 15 inch BBS or similar wheels for a cool and sexy look, along with superior Michelin tires (there are also high quality after-market 15 inch Bunts out there). I sure as heck do not use 14 inch Bunts on my 500 SEC and that is due to the very poor tire choices now available. I have 15 inch Penta-like British manufactured Melber Wheels with Michelin Defenders and that combination is noticeably superior to anything I tried at 14 inches (it's at higher speeds where you can feel the difference). This is my personal opinion, but I believe going 1 or 2 inches up does not hurt handling or ride quality on w126's, while it's 1 inch up max on w123's. A friend of mine who recently passed away had 15 inch BBS wheels with Michelin Defenders on his 1985 300CD and it drove like a dream. Plus, it looked hella gorgeous.

OEM Pirelli Cinturato CN36 with the correct round shoulder and in the proper 195/70R14 size are still available from a vintage tire distributor out of the UK. Expensive but worth it. Round shoulder reproductions of vintage tires like the CN36 should work better with the factory suspension design than a modern square shoulder radial. Looks awesome, John! Related to the trans fluid question. Is there any concern about plating the ID of the fuel injector lines? I’ve read that the diesel fuel can react with the zinc plating.
@woodsandbarclay7 күн бұрын
No you absolutely do not want to plate the inside of your fuel injector lines it's very important that you put rubber caps on the lines before you send them off to plating. We Cap all of our lines so nothing can get in there. It's not because diesel is going to react with it it's because it will clog up the line if any plating or anything else gets inside the line.
@SamSung-ew3dk7 күн бұрын
Did the judges explain why you should not remove the chrome fender trims? I would be concerned about potential rust underneath, not to mention that these weren’t factory original..
@woodsandbarclay7 күн бұрын
There's no rust on a 10,000 mile car that has lived in a garage for the last 40 years. This is the most rust free classic car you'll ever see in your life. But regarding the Mercedes Legends of the Autobahn judges they like to see the cars exactly how the original owners had them. they consider it part of the story tied to the original owner. I agree with you though I think the cars should be put back to exactly how they left the Mercedes factory.

That's what happens with all classic cars eventually the original manufacturer stops supporting them and the aftermarket steps up. Keep in mind Mercedes never actually made any parts they just designed cars and assembled parts. Most of the companies that actually made the parts for Mercedes are still in business and all the parts are readily available. The aftermarket is already producing many of the parts that we can no longer get through Mercedes and the quality is really good. We already saw this process with classic muscle cars of the 60s. Today you can buy every single nut in bolt and build a muscle car from scratch. Old stock parts are still readily available on eBay or other marketplaces. So don't let it worry you 😉
