I distinctly remember my Mom buying this for me at the mall in 1984. The Sears thing makes perfect sense. I just didn't remember the exact store we went to. Of course it must have been Sears. For years this confused me as I always considered the Joe Bridge Layer to be an '84 vehicle release. When in fact it was '85. Love the vehicle and great review.

Hey, man. You mentioned the South American release, so... I'm Brazilian and I had that tank. Our version didn't come with the figure, it was the same shade of green as the one on your review and the bridge arm had the V design. I used to pretend that the arm was also a laser cannon, for anti-air attacks, since the real cannons only move sideways. Cool video!

I seem to recall a mechanised toy similar to this. It layed the bridge and drove over it and disconnected at the same time.

I used to have this toy. Actually I won this from a tv contest. the local NBC station used to give away gi joe toys as prizes during the airing of the cartoon. all you had to do was send self addressed stamped post card to the station and wait to see what happens next. I remember watching the cartoon and seeing my name scroll on the screen, along with other names, and I got excited. I didn't know what prize I was going to get but I was hoping for a skystriker of the sr 71. but nope. when this arrived in the mail it was in a big brown shipping box. when I opened that there was a white box inside and there was nothing printed on the white box except for a few black numbers and letters on one side. I opened the white box and inside was the toy along with the action figure. it was the same inside as if it had been bought in a toy store but the difference was the white box. no cover art at all which disappointed me. when I saw it was the bridge layer I was upset but I learned to love it. to this day I don't know what the heck happened to it. Obviously it was a promotional item sent by Hasbro to the NBC affiliate and that's why the box was white but that was what I really didn't like...no art on the box.

The GI Joe Club did a Tollbooth in there FSS that is smaller in scale in order to fit in the Bridge Layer.

Great review. I saw this in Target when I was a kid. My mom wouldn't buy it, so I saved my allowance to get it. I never regretted it. At a toy convention, 5 or 6 years ago, I found one again. It was complete without the figure, but found him complete later. The bridge lock strut broke and I ended up fashioning a piece that would attach to the rest of the strut. You can't tell until you start looking at it closely. Do you collect only G. I. Joe or do you also look at other toy lines that are similar to G. I. Joe? The reason I ask is because of the True Heroes Battle Bridge set. If you've never seen it, it's pretty nice and could be a decent substitute.
