A horse from California was supposed to win the 112th Kentucky Derby, but hardly anybody expected it to be Ferdinand, a 17‚1 shot ridden by a 54-year-old jockey and saddled by a 73-year-old trainer. But at the finish of a slow and roughly run Derby, it was Ferdinand, ridden by Bill Shoemaker and trained by Charlie Whittingham, drawing away to a 21/4- length victory over Bold Arrangement and Broad Brush, with the favored Californians, Snow Chief and Badger Land, off the board.
Shoemaker steered Ferdinand, a son of the English triple crown winner Nijinsky II, through heavy traffic from last place to first while covering the mile and a quarter in a dull 2:024/5. Bold Arrangement, an English colt, won a three-way duel for second place, finishing three-quarters of a length in front of Broad Brush. Snow Chief, the 2‚1 favorite, tired badly to finish 11th after taking a brief lead round the far turn. Ferdinand paid $37.40 for $2 to win, the highest Derby payoff since Gato del Sol, also a Californian, also rallied to win from last place and returned $41.40 in 1982.
The race was a sentimental triumph for Shoemaker, who became by far the oldest rider ever to win the race while scoring his fourth Derby triumph, and for Whittingham, a Hall of Fame trainer who had never won a Derby. Artistically, though, it was a less successful Derby run before a crowd of 123,891. The winner's time over a fast track was the slowest in 12 years, and more horses had rough trips than honest ones today.

I bet on and won on Ferdinand in '86. A few years ago I looked him up and found out the horrific ending this magnificent animal had. I haven't bet on a horse since. If we are going to use animals for our entertainment we must be better stewards over their lives than we are. We fail our animal friends constantly. Just heartbreaking.

This was an absolutely masterful run by the great Bill Shoemaker. Dead last at almost half way through the race, he did not panic or give up as a lot of younger jockeys might have. He carefully guided Ferdinand through traffic to the finish line. His last move to the inside down the final stretch, and then right between two horses, was very skillful.

Bill Shoemaker´s ride in 112th. Kentucky Derby was a masterpiece about a racehorse must be ridden. In first quater pole, Ferdinand was last but "The Shoe" waited his moment avoidnig any stumbling block, and when the field turned for home, he was sure Ferdinand would win Run for the Roses. Not in vain Bill Shoemaker won 8.848 races in 41-year career. Greetings from Venezuela.

I grew up reading Walter Farley books about race horses, and watching the Triple Crown. By chance, I saw an ad in the Kansas City paper for a bus tour to the Derby in 1986. I jumped at the chance…and I happened to meet my long term beau on the bus! We returned to Churchill Downs for our 10th anniversary. Since we met, we’ve had a lot of travel adventures. I did not win on the horses that day, though. I don’t even remember which horse I bet on, but it was probably Snow Chief.

This is when you still had sprinters trying to stretch out running in the Derby. 6f clocked at 110 and change. You don’t see that anymore. Approaching the far turn the pace collapsed. Ferdinand would have to close on a much slower pace by today’s standards. Would be a differently run race possibly with a different result. Just an observation. That’s how it was in those days.
@ahsanshaikh786

Great observation. I think the new point system to get into the Derby favors routers over sprinter. This was a pace collapse reminiscent of 1982 with Gato Del Sol and this year with Rich Strike.

Despite all the fanfare, Ferdinand ended up in a slaughterhouse - hanging upside down with his throat cut because he didn't do well at stud. He went to Japan for a few years where he didn't produce any good horses -- so they hacked him to pieces. This horse made a lot of money for someone who should rot in hell. Take it from a racehorse trainer (me) that this is the fate of most horses.

A masterful ride by The Master at 53 years old. Ferdinand went on to win the Breeders Cup Classic and be selected Horse of the Year. He was sold at stud to a Japanese breeder and went on to a Japanese slaughter house. A warrior champion that deserved honored retirement. That showed me the Japanese are still the same cretins that massacred Chinese and Filipinos. They lost face for 1,000. years from WWII. With Ferdinand they reset the clock.

Jockeys can't follow thousands of horses. What would Shoemaker do, tell then they can't sell, tell the Japs what to do? So what, other counties (including US) slaughter horses? @@tessdurberville711you didn’t make any point even though you tried to disagree. Nobody kills a Derby winner. No human that is. So what if those countries slaughter horses, so does the US.
