Cars from '85-'99 are currently the home of some amazing bargains. I found this 1986 300ZX sitting on the side of the road in a tiny town in central Ohio. I offered less than half the asking price and after a little haggling, it was mine. I have had it for a few years now and bizarrely it has become a favorite in the Garage. Ok, maybe not a performance favourite but a Friday Night Lights style go hang out at the Swenson's with your friends. Good times come very affordably here and it is one where, if you buy right, could be a great investment for the future. Please check out my other videos and subscribe to the channel. You can also read my Editorials and articles in every issue of S3 Magazine. Thanks for watching!!
*** note. I am well aware that the Nissan Sentra SE-R (b13) a car on my “recommended” list IS infact a Nissan. I was copying and pasting those titles in the edit and it is titled as a toyota. Hilarious. Made me 😖 that I didn’t see this prior to posting. Thanks for your grace on this matter

To be honest the 1985-1989 has more soul than the newer z like I know the 370 is faster than the 300zx but 370 doesn't have the unique gadgets like t-tops and pop up headlights like the 80s models had

Well your video inspired me to buy my own Z31 and time travel back to the 80s! I just bought a 1988 300ZX non-turbo and I'm looking forward to taking it out on some back roads, taking the t-tops off and cruising to some 80s tunes.

I have an 50th AE, so I am biased, but these things are absolute steals at today's price point. Just go through and replace all of the rubber bushings with poly, and get the MSA sway bars for like $300, its a totally different car. If you REALLY want to splurge the $100 delrin steering rack bushing will make the steering response instant and take out 90% of any deadzone. Those wheels can be polished out with a DA sander, 2k clear coat and 10-40 hours depending how crazy you want to go.

Awesome input. There was one on bring a trailer recently wearing these wheels painted all silver. Not a good look. The car sold so cheap for what it is. I have considered taking a serious look at the suspension with an eye on added performance. I may go that direction. The anniversary is seriously cool. One of the best celebration editions of that era. Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to comment. Cheers!

In 1991 I bought a 1985 300zx I gotta tell you that 300 was so freaking tight it handled way better than the vette with the windows up it was so quiet if you have never had T top's you wouldn't understand t tops made so much noise. I have the same car, same color and everything but in manual. I mean, 70% of the clear coat is completely gone but oh well. It also had 220k when I first bought it back in October of 18. Anyways, I now have an automatic 85 z31, all leather, digital dashboard, this and that. But I sure do enjoy the manual 86, not only for it being manual, but also the way it looks, I guess. I suppose those side skirts they did and the "wider body" made it pop up. Either way, I love these cars. The 300zx z31 made me realize how much of an 80s car it is, and how much advanced it was at the time. And how beautiful 80s vehicles are. Either way, good video man! Just a couple critiques for you here. Only the 84's had the datsun name. 2+0 is the 2 seater and the 2+2 is the 4 seater. The "turbo fender flares" you talked about, only came on 84 AE cars. 85's didn't have them and from 86 on the body is designed with the flares as a part of the body. The low oil pressure issues is typically just the gauge itself 95% of the time. The FSM specs are 11psi at idle and 10 psi per 1K/rpm. Sure there's a lot of vacuum lines and extra emission crap going on under the hood.... but complex? Not in the slightest. If someone can't handle vacuum lines, they shouldn't be working on cars lol. Which is most of the ugly crap under the hood. You only need 3 sensors to run the car, you can practically delete EVERYTHING else. Don't get me wrong, it's not as if you're like me. Owning Z31's for 10+ years and all... But if you're gonna make a video detailing specs, features, and what's cool about a car.... Well a little more in depth research wouldn't be a bad thing. Example. 84-85 NA cars came 4 lug and the 84-85 turbo cars were 5 lug wheels. The turbo cars had bigger sway bars. Late 87 and up models had an LSD. 87+ turbo cars had a smaller T25 turbo, compared to the 84-86 T3. 88 had the Shiro special edition, 84 had the AE edition with the SO COOL body sonic sound system. You got all the cool stuff down pretty well, but the specs and info... I MIGHT be a little triggered lmao. I just can't help it, love the cars to death.

So a few corrections: - It was only a Datsun by Nissan in 1984. 1985-1989 it was only badge as Nissan. - It was technically a 300zx in Japan as well. The Fairlady Z name was attached of course but because this car had a ton of engine configurations in Japan, it required different names. 200ZR, 300ZX, 300ZR, 200ZX, etc... - The voice system is known as the Bitchin' Betty. Fun fact, if you get a JDM module you can make your US Z31 speak in Japanese. I always wanted to do it, but I never had a Z31 with the voice system. -Z31s don't increase in value unless you have a clean 84 AE or a 88 SS model (and some early 87T models). They aren't desirable so there is no market for them.

Stuff like that def gets hard to find for a reasonable price once cars get this age. Don't lose hope. She deserves to be restored.

@pittytho8638 I guess you and I are “weird” together because I too absolutely love the 1980’s Nissan 300zx. I just recently bought a 1986 300ZXwith 85k that’s in awesome condition and I also bought a 1996 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo with only 71k miles!! Life is good!! Go get yourself one!!

I had about five Z31s. Including three 50th Anniversary cars. I loved the 84 and 85 Turbo scoop on the hood. Great lines. However they drove terribly. The handling was so bad. The Supra was a much better ride.

I bet it was all that time you spent in. KITT 🤣 . Seriously though, I took some flack from other commenters on not being in love with the handling on this car. The truth is, it’s a touring car, not a “handler” everything from Germany would out corner it and the Supra both handled flatter and was smoother going down the road. They are great time capsules though . Cheers , subscribe if you would be so kind.

@@TimsEnthusiastGarage I remember on one of my 50th Anniversary cars I ditched the electric suspension and bought a stiffer one. Might have been Bilstein. Anyways it still drove like shit. I also owned 1983 280Z Turbo. Terrible handling. 1988 Chrysler Conquest TSI 1989 Supra Turbo Pontiac Fiero's 84 and 87 (fastback) 1987 RX 7 1990 300ZX TT The 90s really helped the JDM scene. I had many 90s models as well. The Mitsubishi products always were the most flimsy. The six cylinder on the Z, 200SX, and Maxima were quite reliable at the time. Only after moving to 🇩🇪cars did I find true handling. 1992 VW Gti and later a VR6 Gti. The best handling were the Mercedes-Benz models. 560 SEC was the most solid high quality vehicle I have ever owned. Now I am staying with the S Coupes and the S class sedan. I don't see a better vehicle on the road actually. Even my regular E350 Sport out performed my 2010 370Z. I love the Z. However they were not really ever comparable to the European sports cars.

Well said. I do a car show called MotorVice that celebrates cars from this era. Yes, boomers, for the most part, don’t get it. They see these as “cheap jap crap” which is sad but honestly, part of why these are affordable. They are still driving the prices up on 60s cars I couldn’t care less about. Cheers and thanks for watching!
