This 1986 Yamaha FZ600 is a project that I've been working on over the last couple of months and I wanted to share the story of this particular bike.
In this video I pretty much give a quick history of how I ended up working on it as well as a short look at the bike in general and why it was such a big move in design.
As of this video the brakes have been rebuilt but still waiting on new lines. The top end has new cylinder and head gaskets, carburetors have been gone through and the bike has gone through some polishing here and there.

Thanks for the super hard work in bringing this beauty back to life. This is the bike that started my love with motorbiking. It was fantastic to ride and what a sound (had a F1 exhaust on it). I now ride a zx14 - talk about a huge quantum leap in performance. I will always have a soft spot for this bike. Also because of this bike I love the look of dual lights (that are always on). Single lights just look blaw.

That's awesome! Can't wait to see it! Are you going to post anything on it? I'll try putting together a few things on this bike but much is already done so I'll go over a few things.

Unfortunately I'm no videographer! I'll eventually post the restoration process online. The wiring loom on my bike practically wasn't routed and just dumped loose!

The story at the time was that this was the non-US FZ400 with the FJ600 engine - since US buyers wouldn't buy the 400cc version. I test rode a used one once and should have bought it but bought a GPz 750 instead. That was around 1989.

Exactly... Us damn Americans have this idea that bigger is better. One bike I always wanted to get my hands on was the Kawasaki ZX4R. 4 cylinder 18000rpm redline 400cc screamer. Couldn't get them here...

I just got one of these bikes and I am having a heck of a time getting the airbox out and the carbs off. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Lots of beer and patience. It'll come out but likely the rubber boots are all hard as stones lol

Say, how do you get the carbs out? It's so tight in there that it looks like I have to remove the battery box in order to get enough room to remove the air box to get to the carbs.

If I remember correctly, you've just answered your question. It was a massive pain in the ass. The airbox has to come out and I'm pretty sure I started with battery box. Filled up a whole swear jar.

Guy locally up here in Washington / Idaho was selling one last summer that was a drag bike. Was running high mid 8's in the 1/4 mile on this bike. I was shocked!

@Will Harris pretty sure that's the only way I'll get this one up to those speeds too 😂😂. I'm thinking of possibly doing some vintage racing on it if I get it back to glory this year.

@Will Harris love me those old 2 smokes! Hahaha! Yes they were the RZ350. Great bike and sometimes I'll see one in the wild. This one hasn't run since I've taken it in. The carbs need serious work and I rebuilt the entire top end for this client before he stiffed me on the cash, so I now own it after going through the proper legal channels. I know it'll fire though as I've sprayed a little starter fluid into the intakes and hit the starter button to hear a nice (but short) Rev before she runs out of combustibles in the cylinders. Carbs are currently on my work bench and I'm having to actually drill out two of the main jets because they're fused into the carbs. Hoping to remedy that soon. I have to fit the new tank with fuel cock and new cap too. Aside from that she needs brake lines and pads and some fresh tires.
