Come this Friday, the Independent State of Samoa will celebrate 56 years of Independence. Much has changed over the decades in our small island nation, some good and some bad. But you be the judge of that.
Here is a throwback to 1987 when Samoa celebrated her Silver Jubilee. Maybe some of you are in this clip or were involved in the festivities back then (which looked more better and fun than now lol).
Enjoy!

PS. The hoosi power from our cousins in the neighbouring Kingdom must have been on full force that year for them to come first and second place in the Fautasi races haha Malie tamasii Tonga!

I was just one month old at the time. Wow. How time flies and how things changes overtime. Back then it was a massive celebration to the whole nation. Samoa used to celebrate the Independence Day in a week but now it’s only a day celebration. Such beautiful video. God bless Samoa 🇼🇸

Awww my mum came to NZ in September 1987 when she was 6yrs old , she's Never been back since, sadly due to our beautiful Nana suffering alot of strokes and is in a rest home. My mum has no siblings and me and my sister are her Miracle children and our Nana's as my mum got told she could never have children at 16yrs old,My mum turned 42 on August 21st and we can't even travel to our dad side Doncaster England as he's also unwell and deemed unfit to travel abroad so our mum,my sister and me all look after our Nana and Dad as mum says that is the Samoan Way.Alofa le tausi Fa'amaoni' 😊 I love watching Samoan History and learning My Mum's Beautiful Country Samoa ❤and Learning More About My Samoan Culture and ofc our Dad's Side . I was 8yrs old then and my family cousins, uncles, aunties, and grandparents were there and we also had a float. It was a time we all looked forward too eating peanuts, oranges and then looked forward to the canoe racing. Thanks for sharing this video brought so much good memories of being young in Samoa from Papauta.

Wow. I feel so sad looking back at these days but so happy and lucky at the same time that I got to experience living in Samoa. I came from NZ to live in Samoa in 1987. I absolutely loved it. My dad was from Savaii and my mum was from NZ and I always wanted to go back and live there ever since I first went there on holiday with my family as a very young boy in 1973. I have many happy memories of living there for 3 years (87-90) I worked as a flight attendant with Polynesian Airlines, which was a dream job for a 20 year old guy of course. I worked with guys like the late Frank Aita, later to become Captain Frank Aita, Joe Lolani, Pati Eves, Rebecca Lelaulu and so many other awesome people for anyone who may know them. Some of the happiest memories of my life were in Samoa at this time. I often dream and wish I could back to these days in Samoa. I know…it’s just a happy dream I love to have. I still long to go back and bring my family to experience Samoa. Of course it can’t be the Samoa I experienced and loved back then but somehow I still want them to feel it. When I left all those years ago, I remember as clear as day, the promise I made while looking out the plane window as I left Samoa, “Don’t worry, I promise I will come back Samoa”. I hope I can keep that promise 😢♥️
