I was there that night and I still have my Homer Hanky to prove it! This was one of the greatest days of my life - pheasant hunting with my dad in the morning on a perfectly sunny Minnesota Fall day, and then going to the World Series that night from tickets I had won from the construction company I worked with. Not only did we win (and win the series!), but Gladden's grand Slam was the capstone to it all!

What a great series! I miss the "Star Wars" theme being played after every home run. And there were a lot of them in those days.

And when the "Darth Vader" theme was played when the opposing manager walked to the mound to take out the pitcher. And then played "Happy Trails". 😂

@@Weebs82589 I was at game 6 that year when Hrbek hit his grand slam and the noise supposedly broke the decibel meter. They did show a broken decibel meter at some point during the broadcast and I think it was Al Michaels who said it was the Hrbek slam that broke it. Later on I heard that the broken decibel meter story might have been made up though. I will say it was LOUD in that stadium when he hit that ball. As soon as he made contact the whole stadium erupted. I’m shocked that I didn’t experience hearing loss.

I am willing to bet the Metrodome during the 87 end 91 World Series was the loudest in any sporting event...EVER. Second would be Chicago Stadium in the NBA/NHL Playoffs, 3rd would be Joe Louis Arena in the Playoffs.

This Twins team was phenomenal. I used to hate them so much because they beat my heavily favored Tigers, but on retrospect, this WS team ages like a fine wine: an awesome team for the ages. I really appreciate their heart during this modern day.

I'm a White Sox fan but I gotta tell you, I love watching this series, particularly the games in the Metrodome. The crowd was just awesome. I still remember watching this series, and I'll be honest, I didn't think the Twins would win it because I thought the Cardinals were good enough to win at least one in the dome. Was I ever wrong on that one. I made a bet with a senior in my high school (I was a sophomore that year) on this Series, and we wagered a can of pop pet game. Honestly, I'm glad I lost this one, as I am not a Cardinals fan. Fun series. It really was. And the Twins got the job done. My hat"s off to then.

juddbh Loved Gladden. I met Dan a week after they won the ‘91 series. A friend of mine owned Burnsville Yamaha at the time which was near Park Jeep. Dan walked in while I was there to demo ride a new snowmobile. The owner friend of mine was out for the day and a lady worker was the only employee but she knew me. She got all flustered and asked me to help Dan demo this snowmobile which I did. Years later like 20 years I ran into him again at Tonka Cycles a bike shop. We struck up a conversation and sure enough he remembered me. Small world but he seems like a cool guy. Just ran into Hrbek on Memorial Day too. I have now met 3 from those World Series teams...the other one is Newman. Good memories!!

Mike Weber No, he doesn't have the numbers for it, but he's the best career .260 hitter I've ever seen. In the post-season he was Mr. Clutch. A great defensive outfielder with a strong arm. Awesome base stealer with good speed. Tough guy nicknamed The Wrench. Looks like Chuck Norris with long hair. Gutsy, big balls, nerves of steel, no fear. The kind of guy who would run head on into a brick wall at full.speed to catch a fly ball. A man with heart and soul.and a passion for the game unmatched by anybody. Always made big things happen, once turned a triple play from left field and even stole home a couple of times. I call him the Glad Man. One of my favorites of all time.

@@scottjohnson1640 He also was VERY instrumental in winning the 91 World Series. In the bottom of the 10th he hit a broken bat looper to center and just took off running and had double in his mind the whole time and just barely made it. I forget how he got to third. Somebody probably bunted. Then, with 1 out, the outfielders were playing way in and Gene Larkin hit it one over the left fielder’s head and Gladden scored. That double was huge.

@@krog21 If Social Media I.e Twitter, Facebook etc was around there would have "riots" in St Louis. Great Point because the Twins who at the time had the lowest ever regular season win total to capture the 1987 Fall Classic. Not to mention if social media was around 2 years earlier in 1985 after the Don Denkinger fiasco, I am sure he would been physically harmed.

A bit of sweet revenge for Dan, as I'm sure he remembered Forsch drilling his former Giants team mate Jeffrey Leonard in the NLCS. Gladden would say in the post game press conference that he wanted to "drop his flap" in honor of Leonard, but 1st base coach Wayne Terwilliger shook his head "no" as Gladden jogged by.

John Tutor was being pumped up as the greatest thing since sliced bread and color television and he had two terrible outings (Game 1 and Game 6). Meanwhile, Frank "Sweet Music" Viola was stellar. One of the key differences that led to the Twins shocking the world.

IMO, the Cardinals had more talent, more hitting, more speed, more pitching, etc. than the Twins had. But the dome field advantage the Twins had was the main reason why they won the World Series. It was too powerful for the Cardinals to overcome. Had they met the following year, the Cardinals would have beaten the Twins in 7. Home field advantage was the key, and the Twins had it that year big time, and that is the reason why they won the World Series.
@quietcorner293
@quietcorner293 9 жыл бұрын
As a Twins fan, I can't really argue against that. But on the other hand, I believe the Twins were the only dome team to win a World Series. So if Domes gave an advantage, why didn't more indoor teams win WS? But I am glad they moved outside where baseball is meant to be played. I just wish their neighbors (Vikings) would also be going back outside.
