No Alien Invasion...just some hokey-pokey 80's fashion faux-pas.
Yes, it's a bit outdated but in a rather cool, retro kind of way. The iconic double headlights, vintage Yamaha color scheme and one of the first true superbikes of its time. The Virago is lonely no more.
Join me in welcoming the newest member of the family, the FZR1000 Genesis.

Just discovered your channel. Really love this type of content and gives me the motivation I need to continue working on my '93 YZF750R. Greetings from a snowy Eastern Europe! 👍

Thanks for the nice comment! Greetings from snow Canada too where I'm having severe withdrawals!! Keep plugging away - every little bit helps. I find what motivates me is if I break it down into chunks and make little mini-projects. Some of the repetitive cleaning can be tiresome but it's necessary. I'll be finishing up the frame and swing arm here shortly and posting another video soon. Cheers.

just recently got an 88 in blue / white with only 5000 miles on it with the hopes of restoring it. Its in an absolutely miserable state cosmetically and the front brakes are seized but I acid etched the tank of rust, cleaned the carbs and the thing runs like a top. finding any of the plastics in decent shape is nigh on impossible, so best of luck on finding non-aftermarket or scratched up stuff. Super excited to see the final results.

Very cool!!! Good that it's running well - I know the cosmetics are hard to come by but if she's got good bones, then that's half the battle. I just received all the parts to rebuild the carbs, fuel system and cooling system. l'm dying to get mine running so I can start with a plan to get at the meat & potatoes of the restoration. I was really lucky and found some good fairing parts from a guy in Florida. Got those now and was able to source an OEM windshield. Thanks for the sub and the kind words. We're all in this together!!

A sadly unrecognised milestone model. Appart from having one in the laste 80's, I upgraded from an FJ1100. The important thing is it introduced the Aluminium perimeter frame to the mainstream. The CB750 gets it's hall of fame for the inline 4 (plus loads of detail ideas) The CBR900 for brining the combination of power in a small light package. Between those two you should find the FZR1000 Genesis for showing that a chassis could be. The next big step was the R1 but I realy see that as refining of elements 1-3. After that we get into the electronic era which is a whole other rabit hole.

So true - so many copied the FZR's finest qualities. This chassis design can still be seen in the fundamental layout of today's bikes. Truly legendary and I hope someday more people recognize that.

Aesthetically speaking I think the late 80's thru the mid 90's are some of the best looking crotch rockets out there. After the mid 2000's they went to a jagged naked techno look which I don't really care for.

Hi Gary - while I was on the search for my next restoration project at the end of the Virago one, I came across a number of these bikes. Intrigued by their history and their legacy, I was actually pondering a scrapped out bike and building a resto-mod. The idea of having a 1987 with some of the 1990 bits that I like was definitely on the shelf. When this one came along, it was clear that because of its originality and completeness, I have to bring it back to original. There is another 1990 Exup in my sights that could very well get the resto-mod treatment.

@@garyhigginson8410 Wow. that's a long time to sit. I'm not sure how long mine has sat but I don't think it's been as long as yours. Judging by the tank I'm gonna say about 10 years for this one.

Wow, so glad i found this channel, I am about half way through the restoration of my own 87 FZR1000, and this bike is in far better cosmetic shape that the one i started with. Parts for these are a mixed bag, some things are easy to get and others are unobtainium. Top of the list for me, is trying to source a genuine headlight fairing, (its one of the unobtainium bits) mine came with a glass fibre one and it just will not do for my restoration, if your front mudguard is in good shape, you are lucky, the way they mounted them means the break very easily. You scored with the seat hump, these are rare and expensive to buy IF you can find one, mirrors are still available new, (at a price), indicators are still available, I have a parts book and a service manual (not a full workshop manual but a proper Yamaha service manual) that i can email you if you want them. My engine had 90,000km on it, so for piece of mind i fully stripped it, new shells for mains and big ends, plus new standard size rings, a new cam chain and the big chain that runs the alternator and starter have been purchased. Judging by how the Virago turned out, you wont have any trouble with this baby. Oh yeah the white wheels do look better, just got mine back from the powder coaters and they look stunning. Mines the same colours as yours, Silky White, Fine Red, and Atlantic Blue. One more thing, i see you have the Haynes manual, try and get the Factory Yamaha manual, as the Haynes one for this bike also covers a lot of different models including 600, 750s and later 1000s and some the info in it is incorrect, I found this out the hard way.😮‍💨

Hello, that is a nice bike. Lot's of similarities with the FZ 750. The engine is of the same family. I prefer the aluminum frame on your FZR 1000. Yamaha made some beautiful frames on those sport bikes. Looking forward to see your progress.

Thank you so much!! The frame and swing arm are beautiful pieces of art! The welding is amazing. In trying to clean it up and repair some of the road chips on the swing arm, I found out the frame and swing arm are both anodized. They will have the anodizing removed, I'll have the surfaces refinished then back to have the OEM anodizing done again. Should look really nice when it's done.

@@KensWorldRestorations I am curious how you will do the frame restoration. On my FZ the swingarm is similar. I did remove the anodization using a wire wheel and sanding (wet). Then scuffed with a scotch brite pad. After that it was clear coated with a semi gloss clear. I was happy with the result.

@@jh-tech5546 I was trying to sand/scuff some of the minor damage on the inside of the frame and swing arm but the anodizing was too hard and it was starting to look patchy. Yesterday I took the frame and swing arm to an aerospace company here in Calgary that specializes in anodized aluminum. I'm having them chemically/electrically remove all of the anodizing, then I'll have a better idea of what I will do. I might then get everything vapour blasted and then re-anodized but I was thinking exactly what you did - a 2K satin clear over everything. It will be very durable for my intended use and will be easier to repair in the future.
