In this video we remove the manual transmission from my 1988 F150. There is bearing noise and some slop in it, which I am hoping a rebuild will fix. Rebuilding and reinstalling this transmission is the last step necessary to prepare this truck for a performance turbo engine.
The procedure shown in this video should be similar for most Ford trucks and Broncos.

Well, even though I have a 94 zf5 and 7.3 diesel, this was my only chance to see the standard come out with the slave cylinder and that process

I have an 150 lariat manual ,it won't go into 1/2 gear an 3rd feels forced has a grinding noise an rejects the gear

Skipped the only part I wanted to see. Engine and transmission won’t tilt down far enough to clear the cutout for the stick shift. 😐

You could buy a 6 banger F150 with a ZF in it? I thought those transmissions were only for the 250's and up

Yes. The 300 6 came in all models. The 300 6, 302, and 351 all use the small block ford bellhousing bolt pattern. The 300 6 was popular for towing. It made all of its torque at 1600 rpm. Not fast but could pull like a freight train

I’ve got an 89 with a six cylinder. The transmission makes a terrible whining noise except fourth. Does that mean a complete rebuild?. Thanks!

4th gear is 1:1 and directly links input shaft to output shaft. If it whines in any other gear it could be countershaft bearings. Watch my ZF rebuild video as it may be more help to you. Could be as simple as a few bearing changes, but if you are going to crack it open it may be worthwhile to do a partial or full rebuild.

So we just swapped our trans with a rebuilt one and cannot get it to move out of neutral... Help 😭 its a zf5 1988 f350

Check clutch adjustment and that the hydraulics are bled properly

Should be able to use the "quick disconnect" tools for fuel and AC lines. Available at most parts stores as either a metal tool or multi-colored plastic set

They put the ZF trans behind diesels yes. Should be able to tell right away by looking at the tag on the trans.

I had it custom made at a machine shop. It's billet aluminum with threads up top so I can put any shift knob I want on it. I put an aluminium knob on it that has a similar finish as the rest of the shifter, making it look like a solid piece. It has a lot more solid feel than the stock one, since the stock one has a bushing in it. It is also a few inches longer than the stock one, kinda giving it a "trucker" feel since it is higher up.

something as heavy duty as a ZF-5 behind a straight 6 is the pure definition of unnecessary. Not as absurd as my friend who put an Np435 and Np205 tcase behind his 302, you at least have overdrive.
