1988 McLaren MP4/4 ex-Alain Prost F1 Car: Honda 1.5L Twin-Turbo V6 Sound!

I've been patiently waiting to record a classic Honda-powered F1 turbo car for so long and the opportunity presented itself with none other than the greatest one: the 1988 McLaren MP4/4. In fact, during the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed, McLaren celebrated its 60th anniversary bringing many of their legendary cars such as this MP4/4, chassis 04, used exclusively by Alain Prost in that season. With this car Alain won three races (Monaco, Mexico City and Paul Ricard) and he used it in San Marino, Canada, Detroit and Silverstone.
According to the numbers, the MP4/4 is still the best F1 car of all time thanks to its 15 wins out of the 16 races of the 1988 season giving an impressive 93.8 per cent victory rate which hasn't been beaten yet by other cars.
1988 was due to be the last year for the turbo engines before they were banned, so most teams were making a concerted effort to establish themselves with naturally aspirated cars. McLaren went the opposite direction designing a fully new car on a pure turbo engine basis, which put the team at a potential disadvantage to their rivals (there were concerns after the FIA introduced a fuel regulation for the turbo-powered cars of 150 litres for a race distance, while naturally aspirated cars were unlimited).
But at the same time McLaren had secured the use of the 1.5L V6 Honda turbo engines which had been the best engine in Formula One since late in the 1985 season. And Honda's engine management team worked feverishly on the fuel consumption of the RA168E which was specially built for the reduction in turbo boost from 4.0 bar to 2.5 bar rather than upgrading the 1987 spec engine. The little 1.5-litre was producing 675 hp at 12,500 rpm.

Yep. Saw them live in 88 and 86. The 88 cars sound good, but already had boost pressure limits of 2.5 bar. The 86 cars sounded way more brutal because of the extreme boost pressures. They were LOUD and sounded absolutely diabolical. Wouldn't say a n/a f1 sounds better than these monsters, just totally different.

@@rofufojaWhich makes me not understand, why the sound sucks today. The 80‘s turbos sounded like hell. I could live with that. Back in that time you needed a turbo charged car to win. They were not forced to do that.

@@roku_nine I am not a expert in that but why should that be ? When you use a DB Killer for example doesn’t give you more power. I know when you use straight pipes on a car like just for example a Ferrari 458, you could lose back pressure which ends in less power. But that’s a complete different thing, so I don’t know. That’s too deep into science for me.

It's not the engine. It's the transmission. The torque spikes also make these cars twitch and write over the course of the lap.

@@flyingphoenix113 yeah these have hige amounts of turbo lag. Your right foot basically operates an on/off switch with years of lag...and a mountain of torque and horsepower.

A Lego Set was presented with this car and Senna's figure. This 1,5 V6 sound like and angry boar and the car looks like a blade in the wind. Amazing. Respect for the Mclaren workers, vacuumed around the car! :D

Anyone with a good ear can hear these have the same tone as the new V6s...especially down low, but I think the big thing that makes the new V6s sound so much worse is the fact that it's a single turbo hybrid setup, vs the old V6s which were traditionally twin turbocharged. Just pure boost. Raw. If you took the modern powerplant and removed all the restrictive junk they'd sound pretty good too

The newer engines almost never use the wastegate either as the MGU-H is taking the energy from the turbo instead. That makes a big difference in sound too.

Nothing to do with twin turbos and everything to do with the wastegate and fuel flow limit.

@@brolo7234 that too the new V6s sounded good when the wastegate gasses had their own exhaust but they changed it back to pre-2017 where it's fed into the center exhausts and it muffles it more...sucks

CART late 1990s 2.6l v8 turbos revving to 16,000rpm was the best turbo sound.

Because they have MGU-H and the other hybrid stuff... Old F1 Turbo engines only habe a straight pipe exhaust...

This is the kind of car I think about when I see commenters say things like "turbo cars sound boring" or "turbo cars are too quiet" etc. It's like hearing a V8-powered luxury car start up and saying "V8's are too quiet."
