I had one in 1992. The combination of low seats, high wide console and rear window so close gives a different kind of driving experience. It was very fun to drive. I honestly never got tired of the car. I sold it because i got married and a baby was on the way. Now that my kids grow up i am thinking of getting another one.

Norman Guzman...Used to play chess with a Norman Guzman....you wouldn't be he? Anyway, have had a string of Fiero's for 30 years and am now on my third...an 88 GT with the V6-five speed. My 73 year old mother LOVES her red 1985 2.5 4-cylinder automatic Fiero. I bought it for myself, hated it, threw it in a storage unit. She saw it, loved the looks, so I gave it to her. She's going on 15 years of DAILY driving now. Yup, this is NOT a summer toy for her. It's her main transportation. It's super low to the ground and she's really short. I think that's why she likes it. lol

Welcome to the world of Fieros! I have a similar story... I heard all the neigh sayers, and wrote the car off. I finally got a chance to actually drive one, and fell in love. It was less than a year later that I owned one of my own. I have always described it as a street legal go cart :) They handle and corner so well! The car is just plain fun to drive! I do have to say even the V6 is a bit under powered by today's standards, and for my taste. There is a fix however, there are multiple engine swaps that can be done. I personally went with a series III 3800 Super Charged engine out on a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. The car is now stupid fast (Can take s stock Mustang 5.0 or Corvette in the 1/4 mile.... Do not take my word for it, you can find the answers you seek right here on KZfaq :) ), and at the same time I get close to 30 MPH on the highway with my 4 speed Over Drive Automatic Transmission. Like the old adage says.... "Don't knock it till ya try it"

GM's Corvette honchos freaked out when the Fiero was created....with good reason, for it outperformed their pampered baby, the Corvette and only quit pouting when Pontiac agreed to release it with the Iron Duke four cylinder engine. I've had a Fiero for my driver since I bought my first 86 in 89. It's been my primary driver for 30 years and now drive an 88 GT five manual with the V6 which I bought in MN five years ago and drove it back to my central CA home. First thing I did was take the shift lever out and shorten it 2 1/2", the same thing I've done with all of my Fieros. Such a simple thing to do, why complain about it? My Fiero had 21K when I first I bought it five years ago and now has 49K. This car, because it was the last year they were to be made, was displayed on the dealership showroom for seven years and then the owner took it as his personal car, moved it to Florida and drove it there whenever he was on vacation.

I own an 86 Fiero SE and drive it daily, Its an amazing car that gets alot of hate for no good reason from people that should know better.... And yes there were the ones that caught fire, 187 or so from the first production year that was caused by oil leaks from valve cover or from the C500 electrical connector that was placed immediately above the exhaust manifold... All of which was fixed by the recall. But to the people that claim they are junk or crap answer this one question, Have you ever owned or driven one? Ill bet that answer will be a NO. Sam Barer is 100% correct about the Fiero being very comfortable as well on long drives, My commute everyday is around 200 miles each way. The other unofficial reason GM killed it was because it was becoming too refined, fast and was starting to become a threat to the flagship GM car, The Corvette... The 1990 Fiero prototype looked better than the Corvette and kicked the Corvette's ass on a twisty track... And of course GM couldnt have that...

When I was in my teens and of driving age 1984-1988 I thought the Fiero was really a neat little car, keep in mind back in the 80's we didn't have factory cars with 600HP, My best friend had the Indy Pace Car version, My Girlfriend had the V6 Manual and another friend had the GT with a manual and I thought they were all fun cars. I did a few cross country road trips in all of them, never had any problems mechanically so I think for a lot of people it is just the "In Thing" to bash on them but for the period they were fun cars to have and drive. To put things in perspective the 1988 Iroc Z-28 only had 215 HP @ 3200 lbs while the 1988 Fiero V6 had 140 HP and weighed in around 2500 lbs. so the HP to Weight ratio was pretty close.

A Fiero, with a properly maintain suspension (doesn't have to be an '88), and decent tires WILL stick to pretty much any dry road turn. Took my '87 notchie through a shallow s-bend exit ramp at 80 mph. Had to run the mirror's nearly against the guard rails to straighten it out enough, but man, was that a rush, and it stuck. Put H-rated Comp-T/A's on my '84 and that thing held tight to everything. Low center of gravity and great weight distribution make the thing corner awesome. Yeah, you could even drift it on back roads, if you hit gravel in the middle of the turn. Otherwise it stuck like glue. Maybe they didn't have enough power, but if you give one an honest chance on ANY winding back road, you WILL have fun.

Classic case of GM not putting their good foot forward, when bringing out a car. Then pulling the plug, when things just start getting interesting. It's really a shame that Pontiac doesn't exist anymore. Should've been designated as General Motors sports car division. When you went into Pontiac dealership, you should be there to by a performance car! Not a van, SUV or cuv. But a performance coup or sedan. Low volume cars, for car enthusiasts!

My the battery was dead and there were other problems. My mechanic told me I could give him about $300 to safely drive it away (I had driven it to him after getting a boost), or Louie (one of the mechanics at the shop) would give me $300 and take it off my hands. It now has a good home on a farm where Louie and his son are going to work on it. I think it got a good home. Most v8 fieros weigh more, if only 100lbs more, so the feel you get is a bit different. But for the dollars, the sc or turbo 3800 is amazing. @pauljs75

Those Quads made similar numbers to the Honda VTEC before there was a VTEC (HO version had 180HP, 160ft-lbs torque... Modest NA tune on that can push upwards of 200HP and 175ft-lbs.), and they were small and light. However they were plagued with some reliability issues. IDI coil heat soak problems and IDI module delamination, cracking heads near the spark plug holes, gasket problems, and chain tensioner issues. I think that's why those never took the market, even though they could make the cars that had them sort of fun to drive. (I think anyone who has had one had a love/hate relationship. Pep, zip, not boring, but eventually the head gasket and/or head problem shows and it's over.) Later versions or derivatives of the Quad 4 kind of dulled the tuning and power to take some of the lopey and rough edge off, but didn't help to improve reliability. I think another car from that era that'd be neat to see some reviews on is an Olds W41 Calais (Quad442), specifically due to the HO Quad 4, handling package, and Getrag 5 speed. Just an oddball where nobody expects it. However those are more rare (not many survivors now - are there any left?) and even less known than that version of Fiero.

I restored it, had it professionally painted, and drove it for about 5 years... I had a love/hate relationship with the car... I LOVED driving it... but it was TERRIBLE in the snow... Also, mine had some weird mechanical issue that would burn out alternators and leave me stranded at least once a year.... I am no mechanic.. so I don't know what would have caused that.... All of that being said... I would love to own one now... something I could fix up... keep mostly original, but restored... and just drive on good days... they are fun little cars, even the 4 cylinder version, maybe not super fast, but it was fun!

Had an 85 4cyl, 5 spd in silver, I would get fractionally under 30 MPG, roomy inside, a giant-sized trunk...The V6 was marginally faster...the powers that be, didn't want the upstart Fiero to take away the Corvettes thunder..which it could have done easily.

@@T0RP Five speed manual...the four speed was an 84 only version. The 84 version had the two metal plates at the front of the engine cover...in 84 they were a un-louvered, a simple black cover, in 85 and on, they had louvers to expel heat, an easy way to ID first year Fieros.

@@macclark4112 Ha, I'm 47 and had one in the late 80's. You just gotta know how to drive them, they're geared high so you can't shift at 15, 25, 35 like a normal car.

The more I see of these cars, the more lust I'm developing. Too bad this rascal wasn't a fastback. The notchback's OK, it's the guys from Italy and the so-called GT 40 that have motors under glass and better airflow. NTL if I ever get a chance to drive one, I'll be all over that. The video... nice mix of camera angles. Looking at the back suspension working would nice. Ditto for showing off stuff like the T-top. Picking a demo road with more than just one curve would work a little better. One detail in the demo that caught my attention is the brief dip in the road, and seeing how well the car handled it. Finally, never, ever begin anything with an apology. It comes off as whinging. (not even a written apology - sympathize with the offended and then apologize as needed) In this case it's time for "never explain - your friends won't need it and your enemies won't believe it".

He said the top selling American mid engine, but isn't it the only mid engine American car?
@CollectorCarGuru
@CollectorCarGuru 6 жыл бұрын
Cal Naughton jr , there have been many American made mid engine cars, but most have been expensive, limited edition models or intended as race cars. Think Ford GT (the original GT40 road cars were made in England), SSC Ultimate Aero, Saleen S7...

Cal Naughton jr It’s all good! Even the Magic Man is entitled to a brain fart or two. One’s brain doesn’t naturally connect an affordable 80’s car to a six figure car from the 2000s or late 1960’s or 1970’s CanAm car. #shakeandbake
