The greatest sports car ever made! The most ethically designed Mid-Engined machine. The MR2 is a showcase of clever parts-bin construction.

My parents forbade me from buying a car when i was younger. They thought i'd crash it or something. this was in 2007 or so, and i found an aw11 on craigslist. I paid 1000 for it, and parked it down the street so my parents wouldn't know. I miss that car, so much. I wish i had never gotten rid of it. by FAR the most fun car i've ever driven.

I bought my aw11 without my parents knowing either and I parked it at my friends house for a few weeks till I eventually came to the conclusion my parents had to know. I didn't even have my license yet! I was able to drive it for a few years until my ignorance laid the engine to rest. It's been in my driveway for a year. Won't run again until I have enough funds to get a swap.

Yeah I got a 89 MR2 GT and the engine is dead, running on 3 cylinders instead of four at 357,900 miles, piston rings blew on cylinder 3, I’ve been wanting to rebuild the engine myself to learn because it would be my first rebuild but at the same time I kinda wanna swap it with a better engine, problem is funds, I’d either swap it doing the k swap or rebuild the 4AGE with high performance parts.

"It's just so clean, I don't want to do anything to it. I hardly drive it" As an owner of two '85 MR2s, this makes me sad. The MR2 is a car that very well deserves to be driven. You can still maintain it at the current quality and drive it as much as you like..

Most definitely true. I bought my '87 N/A last July running and driving alright enough but in a state of mechanical neglect and on cut springs. I've been daily driven it every day since I've owned it, save for probably about two weeks total where I parked it and borrowed one of the family spare cars (once because my starter went out and I didn't have a replacement on hand, and once because I broke motor mounts and didn't want to do any more damage until I was able to replace them). 10 months later and I've gotten it running and driving the best it's ever been since it's become a part of my life. With every thing that I've fixed and/or upgraded, it's only become a better daily with time and my car. And I do drive it hard as well as lightly/casually

It depends on what your intentions for the car are. I bought mine with the intention of driving it a lot in summer. But I modified that as I saw its value skyrocket upward several thousand dollars right after I bought it. Now that I have decided to keep it long term, I will just enjoy it and maintain it the best I can.

I had to sell it due to time and money in August of 2018. A lot of time went by and just this morning I received a text from the guy I sold it to. He's moving to Washington in two days and has no where for it to go. He said it's either going to me or to the Scrapyard. It's coming home to me tonight.

Mr. Regular, with all due respect please have fun with that car. The thing is not much more than metal, rubber, plastic, and glass. These things can be repaired, if cruising it makes you happy then by all means cruise. What I'm trying to say is don't feel scared to have fun because it's rare, or because it's nice. Don't worry about those arbitrary details, have fun.

Cory Halvorson The AW11 is more then the sum of it's parts, not just rubber steel and glass, +if you crash it insurance isn't going to bother fixing it, and you'll be hard pressed to find another good one in good condition. As an MkI-a owner myself, 'I get' why he wants to play it safe, Heck I got myself an R1 so I can drive my AW11 less and use the gas money I save towards quality time at the track with my MR2.

Considering how clean the thing is, I'd say if he REALLY wants to get dirty with one, just buy a dirty one. They're pretty common as far as 80's japanese sports cars go, the only rare ones are the untouched, uncrashed beauts like this one. Just go buy somebody's project car for $2000 and then drive that thing till it's totally dead

This video reminded me so much of how I feel about my car. I bought a 1996 Ford Probe off a craigslist auction and it belonged to an old man. That car is the embodiment of a 90's car. it looks fast even though it's slow, it's too heavy for a car that size and it's FWD it tries to be futuristic even though it's old school, heck with pop up headlights and swirly 3 spoke rims you can't get more 90's than that. Driving that car brings me back to my childhood and always puts a smile on my face. With 76 K original miles and amazing condition I intend to drive that car as long as I can.

Gotta correct you, the Probe is certainly not heavy for its size. Even in its day it was respectably light weight, it was about identical to the same year Prelude Celica Corrado and even the 2nd gen MR2! Oh, and the base Eclipse. A car that got into mustang Camaro territory real quick. And yours was a 4 cylinder so it was actually lighter than the GT by nearly a hundred pounds placing it lighter than much of the competition.

Drove it for a few months till one of the front suspension bar mount broke and the front passenger wheel and hub popped around while driving. The wiper linkage broke before that so I just used rainx 😂. Loved that shifter. I don’t remember the terrible drone noise. I do remember people’s headlights being right in my “backseat” at night. SkuzzyJ Most pick and pull yards pretty much refuse to sell you full cars anyway; at least that's what the locations near me emphasize. Something about the government deeming their vins purely for parts/scrap. Very sad thing when you see a near mint 1983 Toyota 4x4 sitting in a parts yard giving you the "puppy eyes", and the only thing you can do is watch it slowly get ripped of its parts and later crushed into a soda can.

Reminds me of my childhood... My dad promised to get me a car, and we went junkyard crawling. I stumbled across a black AW11 that looked to be in really good condition and asked if we could take it home, and he said no JUST because it had an automatic transmission. :/ Like, it obviously needed some kind of repairs, I think the engine was ruined and there might have been some suspension damage, but the body was complete and replacement parts should have been cheap and plentiful. Ended up with an '88 Ford LTD, automatic funny enough, which he later sold without my permission. We don't talk anymore, lol.

haha I love these cars too! when I was in the 5th grade my dad purchased a used 87 and when I turned 12 he taught me how to drive it in the Kmart parking lot and then eventually let me drive it on desert roads before I was old enough to drive :D super fun car! in 95 the mk1 had seen the end of it's life with like 28000 miles on it so he bought a 93 mr2 and I got to drive that one when I got my license... I used to take him to work in the morning then use it all day then go get him after work. Both were super fun cars ... the mk2 wins in the looks department for sure but the mk1 had that "you are connected with the car" kind of feeling and the 7500 rpm redline just screamed! the mk2 was more of a mid range power band car. I'm into classic Toyotas when I was a kid I also wanted a 4runner so I bought one last year completely rebuilt the engine, ignition system, fuel system, suspension and all that and now it's my daily driver but I kind of want a sports car too ... always loved the Celica as well so I'm torn between and Mr2 and a Celica Alltrac .... alltracs are hard to find though and the Mr2 is probably more attainable. Toyotas from the 80's and 90's are some of the best cars every designed! congrats on the Mr2 man that thing is clean!

This was great! My second car was a white 88 Toyota MR2, almost identical to this one except it had black (and I think more basic) interior. This car looked special. People thought it was a lotus or something. I loved everything about it except 1. My T-tops leaked like crazy and 2. When the car was parked on a hill, the transmission would slip so if you didn't set the parking break REALLY bad things happened. Mine was super clean otherwise, until some asshat without insurance nailed me in the side and I stepped down to an old CRX I bought for $1500 bucks... God, I miss that car though. Please... for my sake... listen to "In the air tonight" and drive super fast at night. Every.Chance.You. Get. Thanks, Mr Regular.

Everyone has that one car from their childhood that they'll always look at with a smile, that will take them back. And I love when people talk about them because you can hear that passion in their voice. Mine is a third generation 1989 Chevrolet Camaro RS Convertible. My grandfather would take me out in that car always. I remember being only 3 or 4 years old in a booster seat in the back of that car driving up and down the canyon road that we'd have to take to get to his house from where my school was. It's not the best looking or performing camaro, but that car takes me back, and it takes me back hard

I am so happy you were able to find such a clean MR2. And for the same reason that you wanted a MR2 I want all of the 90s Japanese cars as well. As a kid a saw a S13, S14, Supra AND a NSX all parked in front of 1 store while on the way to buy (you guessed it) new pants xD. And OMG I need to own all of them and park them next to each other in a garage.

This is my second favorite video of yours. You speak of this car the way I speak of the early 90s Nissan VG30DETT’s I remember seeing one the first time parked under a cover in my buddy’s father’s garage, and fell in love with it. I joined the air force and it was the first of several irresponsible automotive related purchases I’ve made in my life. It was later stolen to never be replaced. I still remember it as fondly as you speak of the MR2 mk1

Brings back memories. My buddy in HS had an '88. During a going away party for a friend who was leaving for navy boot camp we crammed three people and a pony keg in it and completed a two hour road trip for the party. Two years later we road tripped it 400 miles to chicago to watch him graduate. I've always loved this car.

That's my first car! Best car I ever owned. White 1989 Supercharged MR2. The '89 had a sleeker embedded third brake light in the spoiler. The 4A-GZE was a beast of a motor and the car was so balanced it handled like it was on rails. I loved how the dash had a green indicator light that illuminated when the supercharger was engaged. No ABS! No power steering! Fully independent suspension. Extremely responsive handling and acceleration. Best car ever. Imma buy me another.

This is crazy. I just bought an 87 mk1B mr2. Its clean and low mileage and perfect exactly how it is. And Ive told all of my friends that I'm not going to modify it or race it or send it down a mountain at 90mph. I told them I'm gonna cruise through national forests in july with the t tops out, and rummage through thrift store bins for cassettes so I have more than just my Wonderwall tape to listen to. I'm going to travel across the country. I'm going to go places and see things in this car and I'm going to enjoy every second of it with my silly ridiculous space wedge. And then I watched this, and you said almost the same damn thing. These cars have a certain effect on people, I swear. Its just a wholesome piece of machinery, through and through.

Nah, this one deserves to be a garage queen. If you wanna beat the piss outta something, please don't let it be something that's only rare because it's clean. Also, I don't think "mister Regular" is going to enjoy red-lining his car on a regular basis. He IS the Regular Car reviewer, after all
@TheSubnetMaster
@TheSubnetMaster 7 жыл бұрын
By "drive the piss out of it," I didn't mean "beat the piss out of it." I believe you can absolutely drive it like you stole it without disrespecting it. Sports cars were meant to be driven as such - sportingly. I know that hard starts, redline shifts, and general asshattery aren't Mr. Regular's style, but I don't think he should drive it like it's made of glass. I think we've got enough people saving these cars in one way or another.
@AnArmoredMarch
@AnArmoredMarch 7 жыл бұрын
TheSubnetMaster if there are enough people saving these cars, then why is a clean one like this so rare? people are saving them, but only in the sense that they're completely rebuilding the thing. and yeah, there's difference between spirited driving, which he will do, and "sporty" driving or "hooning" which woukd be fuckin dumb in this thing, in addition to not being his style. If you aren't redline shifting it, or even coming within 1k, you aren't driving the piss out of it, end of story

Your opening monologue dug up my first memory of falling in love with a car. It was my cousin's unmodified Nissan 240SX that he traded his dad's old BMW sedan for. I will not rest until I can at least drive a Silvia.

I can understand that childhood need for a car. When I was 3 years old, I was on the way to the bank with my dad when I saw a beautiful black trans am with all the gold flaming chicken decals turning towards us and flooring it past us. I asked my dad what it was and as soon as he told me it was a firebird I knew I had to have one. Now I'm 17 and a 2000 WS6 is my daily driver, and I put on those same gold decals I had in my memory from when I was 3. I wouldn't rather have anything else, and I'm glad you got your childhood dream car : )
