I love watching these old MNF games. I was only a small child when this game was played, but, seeing Al, Frank and Dan in the booth always brings a smile to my face. Giants and Redskins ( along with San Francisco) were the class of the NFL in the 80s and early 90s. So many great games played between them. The one thing that stands out to me, is the fact drug suspensions were a topic of discussion in the pregame introduction of the broadcast. You would never see anything like that in today's NFL broadcasts... Could you imagine Monday Night Football or Sunday Night Football mentioning Kareem Hunt's suspension for assault and battery, or Deshawn Watson's suspension for sexual assault? No. In today's broadcast, they would simply call it a violation of the League's personal conduct policy ( policies). How times have changed!

This was a 9PM ET air time but in weeks 2-4 ABC came on the air at 8 PM ET due to the writers strike that year. Starting an hour earlier meant ABC didn’t have to find programming between 8-9 PM ET.

Honestly Baddog. That game against the Jets was a blessing in disguise. Because of that game, Bill Parcells and George Young semi cleaned house and won 12 games in 1989 and won the Superbowl in 1990.

greatwuta Yeah but i think in 88 we still had a good enough Defense to win it all and if we would have beat the Jets at 11-5 We would have won the Division and had a first round bye which would mean San Fran would of had to beat the Rams week 17 or else they would have travelled in the playoffs and i think we were good enough to beat the Bears and 49ers in 88. Oh well. Still won it all in 90 but should have also in 89 i hate Flipper Anderson for that !

@@greatwuta , the loss to the Rams in 1989 paid major dividends in the 1990 playoff run. The Rams defensive coordinator showed the Giants some looks that confused Simms and Belichick distilled and put into play against the Bills.

Al mentioned that 4 of the last 8 teams who had been to the Super Bowl the previous year had not made the playoffs the next year. The 49ers were the notable exception, having made the playoffs every year the rest of the decade beginning with winning the NFC West in 1983. They won three Super Bowls the remainder of the 80s, including going back-to-back this season and next. In the age of parity, the 49ers stood out as the Team of the 80s❤️💛

@@greatwuta The 49ers won the whole thing with a 10-6 record. The Giants went 10-6 and didn't even reach the playoffs. There wasn't a "great team" in 88, so if the Giants had won some or just one of those gut wrenching losses, yeah they could have gone to the super bowl, especially if they had played a playoff game or two at Giants Stadium.

This is when nose tackles weren’t 330 plus pound run stuffers. Erick Howard was maybe 275 and they had him lining up in gaps and slanting across guy’s faces. Getting all types of pass rush pressure. Totally different brand of football back then.
