Easy Goer overcame a crooked turned-out left knee, a clubfoot, short upright pasterns, problematic, puffy enlarged ankles and knees, injured shins that required pinfiring, and cracks on both front heels. In Ray Paulick's book on SS, Paulick said Easy Goer had colic on BC Classic day. Horse colic is defined as abdominal pain, and it encompasses all forms of gastrointestinal conditions which cause abdominal pain and inflammation. The clinical signs of mild tympanic colic are generally mild, transient, and usually self-correct. This type of colic is common, and since they ran Easy Goer, the mild tympanic colic was the type of colic he had to have had on BCC day. The other serious types of colic involve obstructions, impactions and entrapments, and require surgery. Running any horse in a 12f prep for a 10f race is indeed hazardous. There are numerous factors, including but not limited to : superior career, superior & better body of work, GI wins, Graded Stakes wins, wins against older horses & open company, running times, avg running times at various distances and at all distances, head to heads, records set, still standing records, weights carried & weights conceded, stakes wins & stakes wins vs. open company/older horses, varying distances won at during career, superior campaign or campaigns, durability, constitution, superiority & dominance, injuries, rider errors, training and trainer errors, preps & prep race schedules/distances, win/loss %'s, trips, track conditions, tracks, amount of races run, post positions, campaign & career earnings with & without bonuses, etc etc and many many more. And even after all of these numerous factors are factored in, who was better is still subjective. IMO Easy Goer was a better horse, had a superior body of work, and had a superior career than SS even though SS held the slight 3 to 1 edge in head to head races by the nose of his Preakness win. John Longo Thanks. Well you got to give American Pharoah credit as a great horse. He was 2 year old champion & has won 7 of 8 races. He was able to do something (TC) that hasn't been done in 37 years in an era when horses are much more fragile, much less durable, and much less capable of running longer distances. The Immortals Man O' War, Sec, Citation, Slew, Affirmed, Bid, Kelso, Forego, Native Dancer, etc are very difficult to replicate. As far as Easy Goer and Sunday Silence, in the absence of either, each most likely would have been Triple Crown immortals etc. Instead each proved the others greatness, but at the same time, most likely denied the other Triple Crown immortality etc. Though, I think Easy Goer had that all timer talent, ability, speed/stamina combination, constitution, durability, etc .

Easy Goer also defeated older horses Six times at ages three and four while conceding a good amount of weight in quite a few of them. SS defeated older horses only two times at ages three and four. Many other factors would favor Easy Goer over SS as well, including a) amount of career races able to run - 20 to 14 ; b) amount of total career wins - 14 to 9 ; c) running times at all distances ; d) average running times at all distances ; e) career earnings without bonuses - about $ 4.8 million to about $ 3. 8 million ; f) career winning percentage - 70% to 64% ; and also records set, near records set, still standing records, campaigns, durability, constitution, dominance and superiority in races - average win margin and average loss margin, weights carried, weight concessions, etc. They were both greats no doubt, but IMO other than SS's slim edge in their head to head races, Easy Goer was better than SS in most - if not all - these other factors and categories. Day and McGaughey both admit their was many rider mistakes and jockey errors made. Day self admits it. McGaughey made just as many mistakes and errors, not only training-wise, but by leaving Day on even after he admitted and criticized Day's riding errors and mistakes.
