Be immersed in the nostalgic era of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in 1989, the year Taylor Swift was born, one year before the collapse of the Berlin wall. Join a travel agent as they guide you through holiday planning in a bygone world. From Poland to Czechoslovakia - this vacation season, the Eastern Bloc is your oyster.
This is for entertainment more than education and features deadpan comedy, soft spoken whispers, cinematic lighting, rustling of pages turning, brushing of potatoes, and new visual triggers, including experimental ones I have not seen before.
I learned a lot about the historical setting during my research for this video. What you might benefit from knowing at the outset is that German Democratic Republic (GDR) was created in 1949 as a socialist state in post-war Europe. Shaped by Cold War tensions, it symbolised the division between East and West Germany. Its socialist experiment, influenced by Soviet ideologies, marked a significant chapter in European history amidst geopolitical struggles and ideological conflicts. The less you know about German accents, the better! Apologies to any native speakers listening. I find German ASMR voices very relaxing and just wanted to give it a go.
Why this character? During the GDR era, travel and citizens' movement was restricted, making foreign excursions a rare and regulated privilege. Travel agents played a pivotal role as intermediaries navigating the complexities of restricted international travel, using their expertise to access coveted opportunities within limited options, acting as conduits between citizens and the unexplored realms beyond the Iron Curtain. Considering how today travel agents are basically a relic, or the preserve of the ultra wealthy, it is cool how important and powerful a role it was.
If this video helped you work, studio, sleep, or relax, show some love! Like, subscribe, and hit the notification bell. Your support fuels the creation of more lo-fi, creative, old school ASMR content.
Thanks to my fellow Londoner and world explorer Alan Denney for the use of his wonderful historical image archive which was used in the slideshow. www.flickr.com/photos/alanden...

I've never watched an ASMR video in my life. I have no idea who you are. I have never showed a particular interest in GDR/DDR travel agencies. No idea how you ended up in my recommended, but I'm glad you did, because I laughed my ass off in the first 30 seconds at the fruit bowl filled with potatoes, and it only got better from there.

Sidenote, but people tend to forget that everyone's travel was limited by not being able to cross the Iron Curtain, not just the Soviet side, and that it was rare for average people to vacation outside their own/a neighboring country. Of course, this was framed as "well why would you want to visit those places anyway" but in my eyes Wessies not being able to visit St. Petersburg isn't that much different from Ossies not being able to visit Madrid. The few westerners who did decide to go to the East (or a non-aligned socialist country) were treated with suspicion and could earn such Cold War delights as wire-tapping, unannounced house visits, suddenly getting fired or ending up in a government file (which makes for a good story to tell your grandkids but isn't really fun while it's happening to you)

Absolutely, we take for granted how easy it is to access most of the world today with the right passport, no questions asked. Then again, taking the decision to fly anywhere is more fraught than it used to be, so one door opens, another closes.

That's really creative and funny! I didn't expect "Ostalgie" vibes in ASMR! One small correction though, the Berlin wall actually came down in 1989, in 1990 was the unification of the GDR with West-Germany, that is sometimes confused.

@pembertr0n
@pembertr0n 5 ай бұрын
Is that “East-nostalgia?”
@truestefku
@truestefku 5 ай бұрын
@@pembertr0n Yes. It's a portmanteau of the German word "Ost" for "East" and "Nostalgie" for "nostalgia". It was coined in the 1990's. It's not necessary nostalgia for communism, it's more about certain aspects of the lost way of life and culture in East Germany and a way to cope with the radical changes that came after the reunification, when many East Germans started to feel as second class citizens. There is an English language Wikipedia article on the phenomenon called "Ostalgie". Similar phenomena you had in all former communist countries, i.e. in Wroclaw, Poland I saw pubs with the theme of the Polish people's republic, albeit no Pole seriously wants communism back. But it represents a lost world with its own style.

@@SwanDiveASMR Yes, a good chunk of my family (both my dad's brothers, and my Mothers 2 brothers and 1 sister) were staunch socialists. in 88/89 my dads two brothers left for the soviet union, on my mothers side all i know is that her sister moved to Ukraine/Donbas areas then returned back to Germany in the 90s after the fall of the USSR. My Dad moved to the UK where I was born he had worked for the Stasi but i believe he in his later years had fallen out of love with Marxism, he claims he saw "the writing on the wall" with the collapse of socialism after Brezhnev. and so "defected" though he says it wasn't a defection rather for a secure future since Socialism had been betrayed by the Party Leadership in Moscow with Gorbachev. Before he and my mother moved to the UK, he defected to West Germany under the guise of being an informant rather than a willing worker of the Stasi. he worked for West German Police, when talks of reunification were becoming more wide spread he, fearing that the new unified German state BND would try to prosecute him due to the knowledge of his past in voluntarily working with the Stasi. He and my Mother then moved to the UK, he was fully open about his past in Stasi intelligence gathering, and the work he did. He briefly worked for GCHQ for 3 years until 1992 when state funding had lowered and he decided to move on to a more mundane type of work as he called it. My mother worked as a nurse so got a job in the NHS. He never returned to Germany, but visited Moscow, Kharkiv (he studied here) and Warsaw many times, even after the decline of Socialism in Eastern Europe. Very large info dump but it's not often I get to talk about the DDR lol!

Honestly I love the DDR and the spirit of solidarity they had. They didn’t believe peoples quality of life should be defined by their success under capitalism. The unification was terrible for people of east Germany, the west had misogyny and racism as core values.

It does seem to have positive memories for many. I am admittedly nothing like an expert but I read that many jobs were lost after reunification. That must have been difficult

@@SwanDiveASMR Totally it was super hard, particularly for women who, when their jobs in the public sector were lost or privatised, were not able to get other jobs because the new owners did not believe women were equal. I used to live in the former east for years and it is fondly remembered by people from there, I think the demonisation was part of a propaganda effort, to deflect from the west/NATOs own issues. I appreciated that your video didn't make out like everything in the DDR is about the stasi or restricted freedom. Honestly I would love to go on a solidarity sporting trip to prague.

It was certainly a valiant effort to develop a functioning public childcare system and close the gender pay gap. I am certain our travel agent was glad of her job. NATO is so fascinating. My research for the Eleanor Roosevelt video made me want to make a whole video about the UN, so maybe NATO after that!
