Sunday Silence never got the respect from the snobs in Kentucky, because he was sired by Halo. Easy Goer actually did get pinballed sideways & totally cut off in a melee caused by Northern Wolf. Additionally, Easy Goer did actually have his path taken away from him in the stretch by Dansel. It did look as if the entire field was running in peanut butter quicksand in 2:05, though Churchill tends to produce very slow times when they have a wet track (muddy or sloppy). To me, the great nose to nose Preakness two weeks later in 1:53 4/5 proved: A) Easy Goer's explanations for not running even near his best in the Derby were justifiable, or perhaps I should paraphrase and state it like the King of KZfaq does and say it his way, "Easy Goer's only slow performances occurred at Churchill Downs when the track was muddy and every horse in those races ran very slow as a result. The only times that EG ran slowly was in the mud at Churchill Downs and that conceivably had MUCH to do with track conditions and the FACT that he did not like CD mud", and B) Sunday proved he was no fluke despite this. The greatness of both shined in the nose to nose Preakness. Then the greatness of Easy Goer shined in his totally dominating romp in the Belmont Stakes, while SS's explanations (distance, track size, in NY, track surface, etc) for not running even near his best race in the Belmont were justifiable.

DRF began listing only the 2 aforementioned drugs starting on 7/1/90, & Equibase charts for horses started to be available here online for races starting with races that took place on or after 1/1/91 to the present time. Perhaps Charlie Whittingham really meant it when he said, "treat owners & bettors like mushrooms. Keep them in the dark & feed them horse crap." Meaning, I am lying to you, & you are meant to happily keep paying the bills & betting your money. Looking up Whittingham & all of his graded stakes winners charts here online on Equibase for his stakes winners races from 1/1/91 until his death in 99, I found all of these Whittingham trained stakes winners (all can be found looking them or Whittingham up on Equibase): Strodes Creek (AHancock owned like SS), Rainbow Blues, Urgent Request, Perfect, Aube Indienne, the aforementioned Flawlessly (all races trained by Whittingham outside drug-free NY), Numerous, Sir Beaufort, Qathif, Miss Alleged, Campagnarde, & Royal Touch, & they all ran with Lasix &/or Bute in all or almost all of their races under Whittingham; while Compelling Sound ran with Lasix &/or Bute in some races, Golden Pheasant ran with Bute in most races, Anshan ran with Lasix & Bute in some races, & The Prime Minister ran with Bute in all but 1 career race. According to Alex Harthill's voluntary admission to Hovdey in 01 DRF/Hovdey article, "Harthill gave the illegal performance enhancing drugs Clenbuterol, Sublimaze & Etorphine TO SUNDAY SILENCE." Whittingham's vet's in California were Jock Jocoy & Greg Ferraro, while Harthill was Whittingham's vet when he ran outside California. However, the outlaw Harthill was always on call for Whittingham, & would make regular trips, even to California, for Whittingham. Without a doubt, Harthill obviously would have been treating SS in NY if NY had not have banned him & prohibited him from practicing; & Harthill most certainly treated SS in Kentucky, Maryland & Florida. As far as other states, Harthill was banned, prohibited from practicing, &/or lost his license's in New York, Louisiana (Harthill also failed the Louisiana state exam), & Ohio. Harthill also lost his Illinois license for 3 YEARS; not sure if Harthill ever regained his IL license, but if IL let him back in that would be criminal. In 1972 Churchill EXPELLED Harthill from the barn where he maintained an office & lab; of course they let him back eventually. Churchill allowing him back was criminal. In 1976 US Customs ARRESTED (AGAIN) Harthill for trying to smuggle illegal drugs into the country. US DEA caught him with an enormous amount of illegal drugs in 1996. Raceday "tubing" of horses had been banned in Kentucky; KY outlawed tubing's, known as "milkshaking," whereby a stomach tube is used to administer a concoction of materials that give a horse additional energy. Numerous abuse of drugs usage by Harthill surfaced in many other jurisdictions & he was denied veterinary privileges & credentials in multiple states; but, not sure of his status in many other states. The fact that the banned illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill would, & many other vets would, give all these, & many other, legal & illegal drugs in races is PURE TRUTH. In the Headless Horsemen book by James D. Squires, Harthill also admitted in 1990 (11 years before he told Hovdey) to California vet Rick Arthur that, "It (Furosemide) started with me. I gave the illegal diuretic drug Furosemide to Northern Dancer in 1964. (period)." Harthill didn't specify even one race, not even the 64 Derby, & he did not specify that he only gave it in the 64 Derby. Besides ND, Harthill also admitted he gave the same illegal diuretic diuretic drug Furosemide to other famous horses Proud Clarion, Kauai King, Lucky Debonair, Majestic Prince, Forward Pass & Master Derby. Harthill also admitted he gave illegal amphetamine & stimulant drugs to Decidedly, Iron Liege, & Tim Tam. Besides Sunday Silence, Harthill also admitted to Hovdey that he gave the illegal performance enhancing drugs Clenbuterol, Sublimaze & Etorphine to other famous 80's & 90's horses Ferdinand [Whittingham], Spend a Buck, Wild Again, Alysheba, Skywalker, Gate Dancer, Sunny's Halo, Gato Del Sol, Deputed Testamony, Winning Colors, Lil E Tee, Summer Squall, & Black Tie Affair. Harthill also admitted that he gave "routine" illegal blood-building drugs (EPO) to Lil E Tee (ONLY Lil ET) in the 92 Derby. These "routine" illegal blood-building drugs (EPO) were developed in THE 1980's (?), & horse racing didn't develop an EPO test until 2012; however, even with tests, many drugs are masked & flushed by diuretic drugs & other drugs, & were/are undetectable on tests. Harthill mentioned this in the book "The Longest Shot: Lil E. Tee and the Kentucky Derby", by John Eisenberg. Harthill also admitted to Hovdey, etc., that he injected illegal long-acting steroid drugs (for ailments & injuries) into the injured areas of horses he treated, without naming names.

Yes, who knows. And it sucks that Easy Goer died so prematurely after only a few foals, but his significant success, influence and contribution was and is remarkable. Easy Goer and Sunday Silence's contributions were both remarkable. Easy Goer and Sunday Silence were both all time greats without a doubt. There are also a few ways to look at it. American Blood Horse pedigree expert Anne Peters said, "Had Sunday Silence retired in Kentucky, it's almost certain he would have tanked commercially and been exported in disgrace, but he found his perfect gene pool and thrived instead." S.S. certainly was outstanding and dominated Japan, but so did Northern Taste, Hindostan, Tosco Boy etc. S.S. and Northern Taste are the two best sires in Japan's history. However, they were both big fish in small ponds - small ponds that was/is highly restricted and very insular as well. S.S. also did not sire even one G1 winner in the USA or Europe. You also have to put S.S.'s progeny's earnings into perspective because the highly restricted, very insular Japan have much much higher purses. Average Earnings Index (AEI) is a statistic used to put the earnings of a sire's progeny into proper perspective. Sunday Silence's career AEI was 2.15. This put his progeny's earnings into proper perspective. Some of the all time leading American sires by AEI rankings are: Bold Ruler 7.73, Alydar 5.21, Nasrullah 5.16, Northern Dancer 5.14, Nijinsky II 4.74, Danzig 4.53, Mr. Prospector 4.25, Seattle Slew 4.12, Buckpasser 3.94, Storm Cat 3.93, A.P. Indy 3.90. And many of the best American and European sires had success worldwide and in the USA and Europe - which are far far more open, unrestricted and highly non insular. They were big fish in huge ponds, unlike Northern Taste, S.S., Southern Halo, etc. American Pedigree expert Avalyn Hunter also said, "Generally it has not been successful expanding S.S.'s influence outside of Japan. The numerous attempts that have been made to propagate his line outside Japan have had below average to little success and moderate results. The lack of achievements of these S.S. sires and their offspring have no doubt left some skeptical about S.S.'s worth outside Japan." As for Easy Goer, unfortunately he died so prematurely after siring only a few horses. He still has 33 stakes winners [27 total G1 wins from 15 G1 winners] as a sire, grandsire and broodmare sire; this from only 53 mares and 136 total foals. That is an outstanding percentage. American pedigree expert John Sparkman said, "These are one of the many reasons to regret the early loss of Easy Goer, who combined blistering speed over a mile with thoroughly genuine stamina. Given Easy Goer’s own superb pedigree and the quality of mates he received during his few seasons at Claiborne, there is every reason to believe that he would have made an even more significant contribution had he lived longer."

The drugs Etorphine and Sublimaze are drugs that gave/give horses such a sense of euphoria and well-being that they feel like they don’t have legs. "Sublimaze stimulates the central nervous system AND produces in thoroughbred racehorses an urge to run," said Dr Thomas Tobin, a toxicology professor. "It is also a powerful painkiller. This combination is a little unusual & it is obviously very useful. Besides, the narcotic Sublimaze has no long-term negative effects. You could administer it once a week, or more, to thoroughbred racehorses & they'd be sound & healthy & stay so." Sublimaze is a potent narcotic. Both are drugs that give thoroughbred racehorses such a sense of euphoria & well-being that they feel like they don’t have legs." Harthill was the real criminal in racing by setting new standards for drug-related cheating. Even though most vets escape punishment, Harthill didn't, as he was arrested, banned, suspended, fined & lost his license numerous times in many states for illegal drugs. However, Harthill deserved a penalty more appropriate to his far-more egregious transgressions. A lifetime ban would have been warranted & actually would not have be severe enough.

Still to this day i feel if this Derby would have come up "fast" Easy Goer would have given us something very special to witness...Easy Goer in my opinion was the better horse and ran the better race in the Preakness & Classic even in a nose/neck loss...Coming off a BRUTAL historic campaign into the Classic and only missing by a diminishing neck after breaking awkwardly and closing on a speed/pace favoring surface like Gulfstream was so impressive..Sunday Silence also came into the Classic very lightly raced and fresh and also an extra month of rest...Easy Goer was the better horse between the 2..Certainly had more talent..

Easy Goer didn't like Churchill Downs. He lost the BC Juvenile the year before at Churchill to Is It True. And He lost the Derby the next year. If you want to be a top colt at 2 and 3 not liking Churchill is not the way to go. Skip Away was another champion who ran his worst races at Churchill. It happens .
