Notre Dame never could win in the Orange Bowl except for their bowl win over Colorado a month later! The city of Miami not one bit hospitable to the Irish! And plus the 'Canes wanted nothing more in this game than to ruin ND's national championship bid after what had transpired the previous season! The win was so convincing it catapulted Miami back up to #3 in the rankings and put them in legit position to win their national title! And when #1 Colorado and #2 Michigan both lost their bowl games, Miami knew ahead going into the Sugar Bowl all they needed was a win! This win against the Irish made their season! Was my senior year in HS and remember watching this game vividly! Bernard Clark was a man amongst boys! He was an absolute beast! He may have been Miami's most underrated LB ever

Thank you for the upload. I missed most of the first half of this game because of work. At the time, my only way to pay attention to the game was from 20 minute updates from WFAN when I lived in NYC while driving home. I became a 'Canes fan from the moment I watched them beat Nebraska during the 1984 Orange Bowl. The only concern I had from this game as a UM fan was if Notre Dame scored a pair of touchdowns early.

I was living in my second apt., 23 years old watching this game lol. Time flies. Ara Parsegian went overboard with his comments. He was kind of homer and Jimmy was “different “ from that old establishment type coaches club. He did nothing wrong. Notre Dame, OU, Nebraska, for an example used to smash their hapless opponents with scores that were worse. The Irish couldn’t stop the canes doing simple plays, blocked kicks, etc. It was a lack of ability that made the score be what it was. I give Lou holtz credit for making them competitive when he took over.

Lots can be observed from this game, the first modern spread offense was on display. We also saw the limitations of option football further exposed. When one is taking on a defense of this caliber, slow developing option plays or play action are not a good basic offense. Inside/outside zone, three and five step drop passing games are essential to relieve some of the defensive pressure.

I think Notre Dame would still have won the national title that season had this game been close, say 27-24 or 27-20 because they played a much tougher schedule than Miami and their blowout of then #1 Colorado in the bowl game was very impressive. But the Hurricanes' dominance in this game was too much to overlook in the end.

I remembered how angry Lou Holtz was when Notre Dame didn't win or at least gain a share of the National Title for the 1989 season. This season had some intense controversy for who was truly No. 1. I'm a UM fan and was glad they won, but there was a part of me as a fan that felt for Notre Dame fans. For UM fans, 1988 was tough after losing the Catholics vs Convicts game. But this game was equally a tough loss for Notre Dame too in 1989. I'm glad to have watched these two teams play. Both teams were clearly the cream of the crop in the college football world in the late 1980's. I think true football fans appreciated both games. I most certainly did.

The eye-test won Miami this national title - ND was a great, great team in '89 but just looked overmatched against the Hurricanes' talent. Had it been a close game down to the final play ND may still have won the national title after beating Colorado based on their body of work that season (beat 6 Top 20 teams)

Jason C The eye test? How about Miami beating the shit out of them by 17 points. Notre Dame tried to snake their way to the NC. They took The Orange Bowl bid prior to this game. If it was given out after the game like it should’ve been Miami plays Colorado and wins the national title
@bradlewis65143 жыл бұрын
Miami was ranked #3 after the ND win! They had to beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, plus have #1 Colorado and #2 Michigan both lose (it was a split #2 vote Michigan one poll, Miami the other pre-bowls)! All three happened and Miami won the national title fair and square; along with their convincing win over ND being thrown in! Fact is, Miami controlled their own destiny and they took care of the control while no one else did! The 'Canes deserved to be national champs!

@@cbod14 There was a lot of controversy in 1989. I remembered that the old Big 8 Conference champion would get 1/2 of the Orange Bowl invitation. And Notre Dame being an independent (still are) was offered the Orange Bowl big before the game. As a fan, I was sort of glad multiple scenarios happened because I have always been an advocate for at least a 4 team playoff format. But style was the name of the game back in the day. Again a Notre Dame fan here...They had Erickson, Leon Searcy, Wesley Carroll, Luis Cristobal, Mark Sullivan, Rob Chudzinski, Randall Hill, Dale Dawkins, Steve McGuire, Leonard Conley, Lamar Thomas, Heisman winner Gino Toretta...On Defense they had the best D-line in college football in Peguese, Kennedy, Maryland, and Greg Mark. LB’s Newbill, Maurice Crum (son played at ND), Bernard Clark...backfield of Hurlie Brown, Ryan McNeil, Charles Pharms. Throw in Carlos Huerta at punter and a stud true frosh in Jesse Armstead at LB. I’m 38 and a Notre Dame fan and I just rattled off all those Miami names without even researching the team. FWIW, this game had a record number of NFL draft picks in it at the time...Don’t quote me but there were near 70 NFL draft picks that played in this game...The NFL draft had like 12 rounds tho back in this era.
