1989 HOY and the Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Sunday Silence will always be the Drug-Free Champion Horse of the year 1989 ; the most coveted prize is being the 1989 Horse of the year and Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion in the Hall of Fame and beat Easy Goer 3 out of 4 times😁😁

"drug free"....what does this even mean? Like all race horses, Sunday Silence was treated with countless medications and therapies over his time, from continual lasix usage to thubgs like bute. He also completed in the era when anabolic steroids were legal much of time and his trainer openly partook....as did almost all top trainers. It's just bizarre how fans now a days (especially boomer.fans) have this very revisionist historian type take where they think modern horses are "doped", conflate picograms of class C horse Tylenol or rash cream with "doping", but ignore virtually every horse before the past decade was on hardcore anabolic sauce (aka real performance.enhancers).

@@mikerelva6915 if you read some of the other comments on this an other SS/EG races you will find the reason for this particular comment. Some idiot(s) Easy Goer nuthuggers continue to be vexed by the fact that Sunday Silence was the better horse (at least in 3 out of 4) and want to tarnish his image by claiming his performance was enhanced by drugs.

SUNDAY SILENCE WAS DIRTY. THANKS TO OLD MAN CHARLIE AND HIS CONVICTED AND BANNED DRUG DEALING VET. THE TRUTH THE FACTS. THE VET IN AN INTERVIEW WITH DAILY RACING FORM JAY HOVDEY ADMITTED TO DRUGGING SUNDAY SILENCE. THE RACING INDUSTRY KNEW IT AND THE BREEDING INDUSTRY ALSO REALIZED IT.

Sunday Silence would have beat Easy Goer anywhere except Belmont Park. But Easy Goer never would have beat Sunday silence at Santa Anita. We have the answer for people. CHURCHILL, Pimlico, Gulfstream. 3/4 times. CASE CLOSED.😮

Had Easy Goer and Sunday Silence met again like they were supposed to at Arlington after the Classic which Horse do you think the Public would have made the Favorite in the Race?...Easy Goer or Sunday Silence?...And who do you think would have Won?....

Co favorites. Easy Goer won the Suburban easily and Sunday Silence lost a head headbob to Criminal Type in the Californian who was the only horse to beat Sunday Silence and Easy Goer (while getting weight from both) and that was good enough for horse of the year. Don't forget that Criminal Type would have been 3rd choice at Arlington or 2nd choice.

Well thoroughbreds are fragile beasts and they only have so many races in their bodies. By mid 1990 they were past their best and Criminal Type had eclipsed both of them. They were retired because they had nothing left. Criminal Type himself had nothing left by the end of the year and had to be retired too. Horse Racing is a brutal sport.

@@DanielSong39 *Well thoroughbreds are fragile beasts and they only have so many races in their bodies* Clearly many horses have far fewer races in their bodies than others. Round Table won 43 races in 66 starts over a span of 4 years. In 25 of those races, he carried between 130 and 136 pounds. He retired fundamentally sound, to a successful career in the breeding shed. I wonder if any other great horse in history had the ability to win so many races in such a short time frame?

2:03 1/5 final time for SS in this Louisiana Derby; 2:02 final time when SS lost the G2 Swaps to Prized, whom Easy Goer defeated by 25 lengths in the drug-free Jockey Club Gold Cup. The Travers is the biggest, most important race for 3 year olds after the TC. Charlie Whittingham knew he would get beat in the drug-free Travers without the drugs and on a larger track with a bigger circumference larger than a mile. A near record 2:00 final time for Easy Goer. Whittingham said after the TC, "I will only run SS with drugs a few times at 9f to 10f against BLUE COWS and BILLY GOATS until the BC, while Easy Goer runs drug-free in a grueling, historic campaign conceding weight against older horses at far more fluctuating, different distances. Whittingham knew he'd also get beat in the drug-free Whitney Handicap conceding weight against older in near record time, drug-free Woodward Handicap conceding weight against elders (25 lengths faster than the Derby), and drug-free Jockey Club Gold Cup against older. Easy Goer won far more prestigious, historic races DRUG-FREE at more varying distances and had a longer, superior career (20 to 14); Easy Goer won 12 stakes, 9 Grade I wins (at 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f & 12f), 6 wins vs older horses in unrestricted, open company; Easy Goer ran all distances in faster times; Easy Goer ran far superior speed figures; Easy Goer ran DRUG-FREE; Easy Goer ran far more races than SS in general, EG ran far more totally DRUG-FREE races than SS (with DRUGS & far more rest & time between races) at more deviating, assorted, different distances with far less time and rest between drug-free races. SS ran far less races with DRUGS and with far more rest and time in between races at less different distances in his much shorter career. SS won 7 stakes, 6 Grade I wins (only at 9f to 10f), with only 2 wins vs older horses in unrestricted, open company; SS ran all distances in slower times; SS ran far inferior speed figures; SS ran with DRUGS; SS ran far less races in general, SS ran far less races WITH DRUGS and with far more rest and time in between races at far less different distances.

... and when all was said and done, and in the history books, Sunday Silence beat Easy Goer 3 out of 4 times in four Grade 1 stakes at 4 different racetracks.

@@hurrah80 They were both great Hall of Fame champions no doubt. But SS held the 3 to 1 edge with SS needing Performance Enhancing DRUGS needed to win very narrowly on smaller sized tracks and with SS getting crushed when he couldn't use the performance enhancing drugs on the larger championship track (and by far the fairest track), and with SS needing much more rest and time between races with performance enhancing drugs. Had all their head to head races been with SS not being able to use performance enhancing drugs, EG wins them all no matter the tracks. Had all their races been with EG using performance enhancing drugs, EG wins them all no matter the tracks. Had all their head to head races been on larger tracks such as Hollywood Park, Laurel Park, Arlington Park, Hialeah Park, Belmont Park (the championship track & by far the fairest track), Aqueduct, Saratoga, Colonial Downs, Ellis Park, Keeneland, Woodbine, Atlantic City, etc., EG wins them all. Had all their races been with EG getting much more rest and time (as much as SS got) between races, EG wins them all no matter the tracks. Had all their races been with SS getting much less rest and time (as little as EG got), EG wins them all no matter the tracks. And when all was said and done, in the history books, Noor beat Citation 4 out of 5 races in 5 Grade 1 stakes at 4 different racetracks. And when all was said and done, in the history books, Beau Purple beat Kelso 3 out of 4 times in 4 Grade 1 stakes at 4 different racetracks. And when all was said and done, in the history books, Akureyri beat Pleasant Colony 3 out of 4 times in 4 Grade 1 stakes at 4 different racetracks. Plus Gallant Bloom 4 to 1 over Shuvee; Big Spruce 2 to 1 over Forego; Damascus 2 to 2 with Dr Fager; Darby Creek Road 3 to 0 over John Henry; Cabrini Green 4 to 0 over John Henry; Billy Kelly 8 to 4 over Sir Barton; Summer Squall 4 to 2 over Unbridled; Formal Gold 4 to 2 over Skip Away; etc. The list is endless. Who's better is completely subjective opinion. Having said all of this, we all must acknowledge both horses greatness so neither is depreciated. I'm just as guilty of it too citing drug-free races, races with drugs, track sizes, G1 wins at different distances, running differing fluctuating distances, rest and time between races, etc. But, I quote: "Easy Goer and Sunday Silence were inches apart and each proved the other's greatness. Both never beat the other in a way that proved either were better in any way, and each race left no one thinking it could not have gone the other way. Easy Goer & Sunday Silence were the others double, the itches each could not scratch. At no point was either allowed to let themselves blink, lest the other steal the show. The two were as close as the fingers of a fist. Easy Goer & Sunday Silence were the living embodiment of what the old-timer said when asked which gunfighter was faster: 'I’d hate to have to live on the difference.”

Didnt they refuse to let Sunday Silences Vet near the Horse before the Belmont Stakes and Whittingham was extremely angry?...Heard this story somewhere but not 100% sure which race it was...Maybe it was another race in New York and Whittingham skipped the race because of this
@benjudah610
@benjudah610 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. During that era, New York was the only state in America that banned all race-day drugs; New York didn't allow horses to race on any drugs, while the rest of the country did. Before the Belmont Stakes, Whittingham was angered that the controversial veterinarian Alex Harthill, who treated Sunday Silence earlier for the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, was not licensed in New York and prohibited from practicing. Whittingham then skipped the Travers as well because of these aforementioned reasons.
