Another redo from my previous page. Last version was when I was only trying to do games under 15 minutes. So I had to cut a lot. So you get almost 15 more minutes added to this one from the previous version. Also I put up a rare San Fransisco win. I try and post San Fransisco wins here and they are usually blocked. So you can view them on dailymotion. This spot was originally supposed to be a playoff game between Detroit and San Francisco but youtube banned it.

What's even more interesting with this game is that it showcases the end of an era for CLE. The team just got old a year later after their final last-gasp run to the AFC title game. Same players, but they just wore out. Their window closed too, and the AFC became Buffalo's for some time. (CIN was a powerhouse at times, but other than '88, wasn't a consistent contender).

You are 100% right. The old “SF” helmet logo was awesome. The new one is too busy, with that ridiculous layer of gold making the whole thing look dull. The old “SF” stood out much better. White letters, crimson background, offset against that old (paler shade of gold) gold helmet. Also, they had numbers on the sleeves, and striped socks. Much better look than what we have now.

I was at this game in my browns jersey. It was a long walk back to that bus. Before that last drive started, there was never a doubt that Montana was going to march that offense down the field. You just knew.

Pagel threw a bunch of picks (some overturned and some he got lucky on due to 49er penalties) that nearly cost the Browns during this game. But they hung in there and made it a great game. Great, great throw to Slaughter at 19:30 onward for the TD.

Pagel got the start the next week against Buffalo. The result: a 42-0 disaster and Carson's firing the next day.

Great game. Very strange to see Steve Young line up as a receiver. Cleveland's magic from the 80's just ran out. They played hard, but it just didn't work out. I wonder if benching Kosar was the right move. I guess Carson felt he had to do something. Didn't seem like he played that bad in the first half though.

Great, great take. At 15:50 there is an interesting comment, in that management may not have been happy with Kosar being benched. Pagel got away with a few but the team moved faster with him. Think Holcomb vs. Couch a decade or so later--some QBs are better off the bench than as starters.

@@joshuaecht Definitely. Because Pagel was a terrible starter.

@@joshuaecht Jones/Walsh and the NBC crew knew Carson was in trouble...the blowout in Buffalo (42-0) to the surging Bills was the last straw. Carson and Bernie never had a great relationship. The ‘89 season was also filled with ugliness between Carson and Kosar (and, especially the OC Marc Trestman), but Kosar rallied in December and the Browns made one last run, which included stirring wins against Houston, Minnesota (OT with a fake FG!) and of course the Divisional win over the up-and-coming Bills. But Kosar never really got healthy and at the end of 1990 training camp, Bernie’s elbow was worse than ever, his knee was gimpy, and serious attrition on the OL and on D, spelled trouble. This 1990 season remains the worst in Browns history in many key respects. Certainly point-differential (and incredible minus 234) which was the worst seasonal tally in franchise history (topped only by the 2000 “runaway train” disaster in year 2 of the expansion era). This from a team that had been in the playoffs 5 straight seasons, with 3 Divisional wins, and 3 AFC Championship appearances...and helmed by a guy who was considered by most to be the best young QB in the game. 1990 was shocking then, and remains so today/

@@Hotspur77 I always tell people THIS season began the downfall of the Browns; neither 1995, nor even 2016-2017, were the gut punch that 1990 was. The Hue era was a horrible tragedy at 0-16 BUT consider this: 1) We got Mayfield. 2) The '08 Lions had gone winless, so it wasn't like the Browns were the first to go 0-16 in the 16-game era. I do think had the Browns beat PIT's backups in '16 and '17, we would have at least gone 3-29 and 2-2 vs. the Steelers. (Similar to Palmer going 5-27 his first two years but for whatever reason, going 2-2 vs. the Inbred). Both 1990 and 2000 at least featured us beating PIT once though.

@@joshuaecht Speaking of Pyrrhic victories over Pittsburgh, don’t forget about 2009 when the 1-11 Browns beat the Ben-less Steelers won on a frigid Thursday night, 13-6. The Browns won the next 3 games to finish 5-11…but only after Randy stupidly hired Mike Holmgren and forced Mangini into a shotgun marriage doomed to fail from day 1. For sure one of the most Brownsian moments since 1990. I remember both of Chris Palmer’s wins over Pittsburgh. Dawson’s Parthian shot at Three Rivers, and Courtney Brown sacking Kent Graham to save a 23-20 thriller in Cleveland. Those were pretty Pyrrhic too, now that I mention it. Spoiled fans who have no sense of recent team history complain about Baker and the 6-5 Browns…IMO life is pretty good now in Brownstown…pearls before swine.

The Browns had a 4-3 defense, and that worked better vs. Montana than the other teams' 3-4s, except for the Giants in that era.

Not one of joes good games but as usual hits the 3rd and 14 pass from his own 23 with a minute left and leads them down the field to kick the winning fg.
