Go and Go, an Irish colt who was flown to New York from Dublin on Wednesday, thrashed what was left of the American Triple Crown crop when he scored an 8 1/4-length victory over Thirty Six Red yesterday to win the 122d Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park.
Baron de Vaux, a 65-1 shot, was two lengths back in third, and Unbridled, the 6-5 favorite, was 2 1/2 more lengths back. Unbridled was racing without the aid of the drug Lasix, which he used while winning the Kentucky Derby on May 5 and finishing second in the Preakness Stakes on May 19.
Go and Go, a chestnut-colored colt by the Northern Dancer stallion Be My Guest and the Alleged mare Irish Edition, became the eighth foreign-bred horse to win the Belmont and the first since Celtic Ash in 1960.

The winner, a 7-1 shot bred and owned by Walter Haeffner's Moyglare Stud, paid $17 for $2 to win as the fourth choice in the betting, and ran the mile and a half under the Irish jockey Michael Kinane in 2:27 1/5.

7th fasted belmont winning time ever? horse was on a different level that day sat on the bridle most of the race and flew home.

I bet him in NYC where he was 7-1, ignored him at my two home tracks of Garden State Park (14-1) and Philadelphia Park (18-1). Had $20 to win on him and the radio broadcast of the call stopped with him taking the lead as my Amtrak train went into the tunnel on the way to Port Authority.

Sec would not have won by no 31 lengths if Sham hadn't fractured a bone in his leg and finished last.

It is not the lengths of victory that is most impressive, it is the time 2:24. Sham was a very nice racehorse, but he was not running anywhere close to that, no matter what.

@@melissa007ish Sham was injured in the Belmont. It is obvious. My remark is patatently true if you look at the other races. Sec most probably would have won the Belmont, but not be 31 lengths if Sham had not been injured. The other horses were just window dressing, and would have finished in 2:30 or so. True the time of 2:24 was remarkable, esp. as it was done by a 3yo horse. Most records are set by older horses. Look, Secretariat was a great horse. I would be a fool if I didn't say that. Many people think Easy Goer, even thought he did not win the TC, but who ran the Belmont in 2:26 the second fastest time, was a better horse, as he won a lot more races than Secretariat did. He beat Secretariat's record in the Gotham.

Secretariat never ran 12f again at 2:24. It was a one time thing, like a woman.

I am not sure what your point is. Secretariat ran consistently fast races, and in fact holds the record for all 3 Triple Crown races. But, yes, compare it to a one-night stand. That is brilliant.

@@melissa007ish All that Belmont was for was for the record books. Along with all the other records of other horses, some of which I'm, sure you never heard of. What amazes me is that the record (on dirt only), has never been broken. It was a perfect 12-clip. Strangely enough, records are broken under 12-clips only below 12f races. Above that they are above 12-clips. On grass, of course, 2:24 has been broken many times by the Immortal John Henry. In 1989 an undistinguished horse named Hawkster at Santa Anita on grass ran it in 2:22.4, incredible fractions, 9-10 lengths in front from the beginning, the other horses stayed back thinking he could not keep it up and would come back to them. He did not, and won going away. A brilliant race, beating older stayers. I'm not implying that he was a great as Secretariat, but average horses on a special day can run a great race. To watch Hawkster run is as great as watching Sec to me, at least.

Go and Go made fools of the announcers. All of the tried to find excuses for the losers, just like excuses for the 3 races Secretariat lost. They mention his 31 length win in the Belmont, but not his loss to Prove Out, also at Belmont. Of course not, let's ignore that one.

Go and Go ran in 2:27 and change, while Citation and Count Fleet ran in the same time 2:28.4. That means that Go and Go is a better horse than Citation and Count Fleet. Citation won by 8 lengths, Count Fleet by 25, that means that Count Fleet was a better horse than Citation, right?

@bruce robbins You're so much worse than any "Secretariat Idolator". At least they spend their time commenting on something they enjoy. I have read at least 5 negative comments you have posted about Secretariat on a video of the 1990 Belmont Stakes. You really need to find a better way to spend the short amount of time you have on this earth.

@bruce robbins Wow.. after looking at more of the comments I realized that nearly every comment has been made by you and negatively referencing Secretariat. Do you not see the problem with spending so much of your time putting down a dead horse that last raced in 1973, when you could be spending your time discussing a horse you actually enjoy?

ha ha Mike Smith. On the favorite once again. Losing by 7 lengths. Hope it happens in the Belmont this year. Smith on Justify passed by an Irish horse and losing...

It's 20`8. I think we can forget about Secretariat. He would not have 31 lengths if Sham had not been pulled up. He only beat Sham by 3 lengths in the other races. It is a Belmont Record, but no longer a world record. Let's stop with the Secretariat crap. We have other great horses. Easy Goer did ten times what he did...

What the heck are you talking about? There are literally zero other people who are going to argue Easy Goer was better than Secretariat. You need another hobby.
