Tom McKean and Peter Elliott were world class, and only the likes of Coe, Cram and Ovett prevented they getting the accolades they deserved

That era when the UK had a glut of world class middle distance runners.

A fast run, but still over 3 seconds outside of Sebastian Coe's world record at the time.

Looks like a repeat of the 1986 final minus Coe and Cram (and a drier track!).

Anything around 1.45/1.46 Tom McLean was very difficult to beat. It would have to be into low 1.43 for Coe to beat him 1990 he was in late Autumn of his career. Great win by McLean here richly deserved.

where has the depth of talent gone?

Does anyone think that if Coe had continued on to the Summer, and assuming that he hadn't lost much training from the fever he picked up at the Commonwealths, that he could have defended his 800m title here and also won the 1500m? If he was in the same form as in 1989, he would surely have had a great chance.
