Great front running from McKean! This was the perfect tactics against these fields. Strangely although winning by quite a big margin, his last 200m here (26.5) was actually slower than the last 200m from 4 years earlier (25.2), where he came 2nd in almost an identical time (1:44.61). It's a shame Mckean got knocked and Coe was ill at the Commonwealths earlier that year. They should have both medalled based on the form they were in just prior. Mckean had some bad luck.

Possibly McKean's greatest race. It is very hard to control an 800 from the front from the gun like this, but the measured, fast but not insane pace, 51.31 through 400, and the calculated hard kick off the top bend was the perfect plan. Most of the time, McKean deserved his reputation as a poor tactician but on this occasion, he delivered the masterclass.

@@forgive7449 Did you notice they gave the medals out in the wrong order? Tom McKean got his Gold medal first. Gold medal winners are supposed to get their medals last. Bronze first, Silver second and Gold third. Maybe it was different back then.

Tom getting his reward. Lovely smooth running with so little rocking movement. The trick is to be as upright as possible so as to not restrict your lungs. Fantastically well coached.

@@Revolver1981 Sydney 2000 was the last time the medal presentation order was gold-silver-bronze, the next year it changed.
