A 16-play drive, all 16 of those plays runs, taking about 9 minutes off the clock, ending in a TD. That is a winning-time drive.

@@johnmonti6993 Definitely. Keep in mind Reggie played mostly DB his 1st 3 seasons at ND & didn't switch to being a RB until his Senior season & boy did it pay off (you'd never see that with most players these days. Most would hit the transfer portal before their Soph. season ended). If I'm not mistaken he finished 5th in the Heisman voting & was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1993 draft by Washington. Not too shabby.

This ND team was even better than the 1988 championship team, IMO. They beat 7 teams that finished in the final top 20, including both Rose Bowl participants and obviously Colorado, who was #1 at the time. If the pollsters applied the same reasoning they used in 1993, ND would have finished #1 again.
@tmarsh03074 жыл бұрын
Eric, I’m not a ND fan, but I loved these teams. They played with heart, class and toughness. It should have been a split in 1989. Miami had one loss too, at FSU, and did not play near the schedule that Notre Dame did. If you go head to head, you have to look at Miami’s 27-10 over ND, but ND had by far the better resume.
@ericdaniel3234 жыл бұрын
@@tmarsh0307 yeah, I give it to Miami based on the head-to-head win. That trumps the other stuff, IMO. I was just pointing out that in '93, ND and FSU were both 11-1 and ND beat FSU, yet FSU still finished #1 because they had the "stronger resume." Opposite reasoning from '89. ND should have been #1 in one of those years ('93 IMO). Ironically, by winning this game, ND gave Miami the championship.
@tmarsh03074 жыл бұрын
@@ericdaniel323 Too, it was a more impressive win. Miami didn't really impress in their 33-25 win over Alabama. In fact, Alabama missed a couple of opportunities that really would have made that game interesting. I'm surprised that it wasn't a split poll that year. Would have been a great year to have a 4-team playoff!
@tmarsh03074 жыл бұрын
@@ericdaniel323 In those days, I think that the timing of the loss had a lot to do with it. In 1989, Miami lost to FSU in October. But Notre Dame's loss was their final regular season game. In 1993 Notre Dame lost in their final regular season game to BC, then had an underwhelming win over Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl. FSU had the benefit of destroying NC State, beating SEC Champ Florida at the Swamp and then #1 Nebraska. Yes, there should have been a split. I'm not saying it's right, but I just think that was how the voters thought back then. I miss teams like Notre Dame from the 1980's and 1990's. I get that football will continue to evolve, but these fast-paced spread offenses are just not fun to watch. I don't think the play calling is near as creative. I loved the option, the power run game and that big passing play at the right time. And as far as leadership goes, Tony Rice was the Jalen Hurts of his day.

Do Notre Dame fans miss this uniform ? I think the current one's with the shiny helmet don't look as good as these classics
@tmarsh03073 жыл бұрын
I’m not an ND fan, but this uniform is far superior to the current ones.
@ericdaniel3233 жыл бұрын
They changed the material of the helmets sometime in the '00's and they started to look really dull using the normal painting process, which I did not like. However, for decades they were painted on Fridays by the student assistants using a special paint containing actual gold flakes from the golden dome. They still have the gold in the paint, but new process has to be done by professionals. Not the same. Painting the helmets was a very special tradition.
@cyaros44 Жыл бұрын
As an ND fan I miss these uniforms so much. The current ones are awful. The pants are mustard and the helmets look too yellow depending on the lighting. These clean white and gold road unis were the best.
@davidmcmullen847 Жыл бұрын
I agree. The gold color of the helmet the past ten or so years is so glossy that it looks cheap. Apparently the school made the change around 2011, and Brian Kelly said in an article that they finally got the gold "right" with the new helmets, and I could not disagree more, even if it supposedly looks more like the Golden Dome on campus. It doesn't look better as a football helmet, that's for sure.

This was such a fun era of college football! As others have said this ND team was absolutely loaded and arguably better than the 1988 team that won the title. Having to play Miami at the OB at that time was simply a death sentence. As things played out a split title would have been justified imo when you look at the entirety of the Irish's and Cane's seasons. Loved this era of Colorado football. Their 1994 team the destroyed a ND team that had no business in the Fiesta Bowl was probably their best team. However, that's when Osborne had the Huskers at their peak and were a hurdle too high.

Not fair that Notre Dame had to beat the #1 team Colorado, for Miami to win the sole National Championship. But at the same time they beat the Irish that year. If Colorado would have won, they would have been the sole National Champion. Bama had some bad luck too near the end losing their last two games. Even though there were flaws during the AP era, the bowl season was much more exciting.

Lou Holtz SHOULD have had at least three National Championships. This Irish team should have ran Colorado off the field. JUST like the Irish should have beaten Boston College by at least 14 in 1993. Ironically that Notre Dame team the year before that had Rick Mirer and Jerome Bettis severely underachieved. That was a national championship caliber team talent wise and better than the team that mandhandled FSU the following year. I’m an Irish fan to the core, but the more I think about the Lou Holtz era and the talent he brought to South Bend (as displayed by his future players that were all over the NFL, including NFL Hall of Famers), he was kinda disappointing.

In the final voting for the 1990 season some AP idiots should have been fired for ranking Colorado at #1, instead of Georgia Tech. Tech was the only undefeated team, while Colorado lost one game and "won" another on a fifth down referee screwup. Their only common opponent was Nebraska, which Tech stomped and Colorado only beat. And Colorado lost to Illinois which lost to Clemson which Tech beat. And Tom Osborne who lost to both Tech and Colorado voted for Tech in the UPI poll.

Good game! But as much as I hate to say this Notre Dame had the better team That Rice kid at QB was a phenomenal player, that mighty buffalo team was a one year fluke! I’ll give credit to that buffalo defensive though those guys where pretty good knavis McGee and company,Bienemy and Flanagan on offensive, good athletic talent but probably shouldn’t have ended up at Colorado. And the truth years later came out in the end with Gary Barnett and Bill McCartney and the rest of the cronies associated with that Colorado program cheated their way to the top and the whole program fell apart after a couple of years and went to hell again, If anyone cares to remember! like it had been through out most of the late 70’s and 80’s the Big 8 cellar dwellers right along with K-state and Iowa state at the time.
