When I rented a 91 Town car with the new 4.6 engine I realized very quickly that this engine loved to rev and did not have any hint of hesitation as the 302 took longer to bring on the power. A memorable experience of running flat out through the gears that felt light and quick the torque was now everywhere.

@@lilibethdoherty295 Sorry my experiences differ and as far as the oil pump failure that is just bad luck, you yourself know those engines generally last forever, they are well known for that. 4.6’s can do pretty good with good maintenance, but they are a lot more complexed and fussy engine, more prone to burning oil or needing timing chain work etc. Plugs strip out easier. And in my experience they tend to drink a bit more fuel.

Between a '90 and '91, I'd rather have the '90, because within the whole Panther line, it was actually unique; it is the first 2nd-gen Town Car, meaning it was already completely updated and has air bags and other stuff, BUT it still has the original 1st-gen, raw 5.0L Windsor engine. The Crown Vic/Marquis of the same years had the old shape, but had a changed dash similar to them but no passenger air bag. This is why I consider 1989 to be the cutoff of "true" 1st-gen Panther cars. Those years were a change in evolution. I own an '89 Vic, myself.

My dad died this year he left us his 90 Town Car with 49k miles. It’s the base model what a fantastic car it’s SO smooth and SO quiet. Amazing story Ford had just hit home run with the 86 Taurus and the 80’s Town Car was very popular. Cadillac was going front Wheel Drive ( Caddi was ugly too). Engineers convinced Ford managers that customers still wanted RWD body on frame luxury. They nailed it. They worked on the exhaust so it would have powerful but refined sound.

I have personally noticed that the color of the interior wood is darker on the red interiors. I have a 1996 with the red interior whose woodgrain is significantly darker than my other one with the two-tone beige and gray interior. Your review is otherwise flawless, so far as I can tell. Your Cartier has such a fantastic color combo!
@CarswithNash

Kirbys and Other Vacuums Too Yes I think your right on that as one other person mentioned that as well. Unfortunately when I researched some of the facts for this I ran across some false information that had said the ‘90’s had darker trim. The thing is I also have a ‘94 Town Car with the same red interior & it has the light colored wood in it so it must have been optional or something. The one thing that bothers me is I forgot the show the steering column tilt levers, the ‘90 has a fancy chrome one but ‘91 up is just a plain black one. Thanks for watching!
@TheUnsureFox
@TheUnsureFox 6 жыл бұрын
Matt's Garage I never noticed the black tilt lever before! Just between the two years, the 91 seems a bit "discontented" in comparison. I've always admired the '90, but I've never found an example in good enough condition to buy. They all look like your beater (if not worse sometimes)! My '96 Cartier is sufficient enough. Love that car. I honestly don't see myself parting with it. Just an absolutely fantastic machine. Again, good looking 91, brother!

Kirbys and Other Vacuums Too A lot of people prefer the ‘95-‘97 Town Car’s, I really prefer the interior on the ‘90-‘94’s but I kinda like the front end changeup on the newer ones. I having been thinking about putting the newer front on my ‘94 so I’d have the best of both worlds. Yeah most the ‘90’s seem to be base models also, I did see an ultra clean ‘90 Cartier for sale once but it was after I bought the ‘91 already. Now you’re gonna hate me but I parted with the ‘91 recently. It was a tough choice but with having 3 the same I felt it would be better for the channel to get a different car in it’s place. While my ‘90 is rusty it is mechanically strong, the interior is mint & I was enjoying it even more then the ‘91, so the ‘91 ended up being the short straw... Check out the link, you will likely be disguised by what I traded for but I have broad tastes...! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/otaRecaQm7mVqoU.html

If you get the dual exhaust package with the 4.6l the low end is so much better than the old 5.0 and if you upgrade the mufflers and get high flow cats the 4.6 has so much torque through so much rpm range and it’s so smooth I think the 4.6 is the better option because its square bore and stroke makes more power with less fuel
@CarswithNash
@CarswithNash 4 жыл бұрын
Billy Gillespie LOL! A quick look at a dyno graph blows your theory. Also the 4.6 car shown has factory duals, that’s the 5.0 that’s single... I’ve had a few 4.6’s with performance exhaust as well. The old 5.0’s & 5.8’s were just so much better in every way then their replacements, so sad Ford replaced them.

@@CarswithNash I am lucky that when I had the front and rear bumper's repainted as the clear coat was going - and they are two tone blue - my guy found a very nice set of trim so it now looks new again; simply, they have to stay out of the sun so garaged and covered outside.

life02ab I actually replaced that trim on my ‘94 with some generic stuff but the width was a little off so I ended up having to shave it down and that kind of ruined it because the moisture got under the edge where I shaved it so it’s already all degraded again.

Shockingly, you forgot the most important difference, perhaps even bigger than the engine. The new front suspension geometry. Lincoln changed the front suspension geometry (control arms, angles) for 91, while 91 Grand Marquis/Crown Vic still kept the old cushy one. The 91 Town Car has the new, "anti-dive" suspension which has a paramount effect on ride comfort. The front does not dive on braking as it used to and is not so soft and comfortable as the old Panthers.

@cougar9902 That generation of Town Car benefited from having both springs and air suspension in the rear, they had airbags just to level the rear and coils for the main suspension, but I imagine the airbags helped smooth the ride as well. I was planning to get one of those era of Town Cars, but then I got this distracted by Mercedes...

@@CarswithNash Sorry, Town Car never had coils and air. The first gen (80-89) had coils, second gen had air.

@cougar9902 Hmm... Perhaps those were added on kits then, I definitely have seen them set up like that.

I had both cars the 5.0 liter it's nice but it does not compare to the 4.6 the 4.6 is more powerful it feels more better to drive it.

Guess it depends where and how you’re driving but the 5.0 does a lot better on the hills and I even pulled trailers with this one and it did really good. I once pulled 5500 lbs up a very hilly road with this car and it never hesitated. I also just love the simple durability of the 5.0.

Tomorria Austin Yes you do, I know you and your car from the Lincoln groups, thanks for stopping by! I’ve since parted with both these cars but I’m friends with the owner of my ‘90, it’s in good hands and I still have a ‘94 Town Car & an ‘80 Versailles, I plan to restore both on the channel one day, I just have a lot of projects on the go right now.

Tomorria Austin Very nice, I’d like to get an ‘80’s Town Car one day, they are a lot harder to find in my area then the 90’s ones, very classy looking cars.

As much as I generally dislike the 5.0 (Very, Very slow), I have to admit that these early 4.6 motors were not all that great. Oil burning, timing chain issues, barely any plug threads, relatively crappy torque, you name it. They did get a lot better after 95, and even better yet after 2000, but I can't stand the round body-style they came out with on these Lincolns for 98, and I'm not a fan of the 95-97 interior or ride either. So 1990 it is!

I mean you can certainly wake them up pretty easy, I have a mildly built 302 in my Mercedes Coupe that makes around 300 hp, even with a tall gear ratio that 3400 pound car gets to 60 in 7 seconds. I do prefer the 351W for a heavy car however, that’s why on my ‘94 town car I have swapped in a 351W, I just haven’t had time to wire it up, that is all that’s left. Lots more low end torque with the 351W and great fuel economy.

@@CarswithNash 351w sounds pretty nice for a Town Car. Shame they never put those in from the factory. I always thought the little 302 and 4.6 were too small for a large luxury sedan like a Town Car. The 351 is still on the small side, but then again so are the downsized Town Cars. So a 351 seems to fit it a lot better in my eyes.

Alan Christensen Everything works on that ‘91 yes, I did end up selling that car since this video (to a friend, it’s in good hands). I still drive the white ‘90 daily, in fact I have a 1.5yr ownership review coming up on the ‘90 soon.

@@CarswithNash That's cool that everything works. I just changed the fuel filter on mine for $60 at the local ford dealer. I was hoping they could help me with my power seat. Oh well, one broken power seat on mine, but still an easy motor to keep truckin'.

Alan Christensen Did you check the fuses? Also be sure nothing has jammed in the track. Wow $60! I guess that is probably the going rate but that is a very quick & easy job, I’ll have to do a video on it one day.

My seat just got old. I had a buddy who owns his own classic car repair who said the track was fine, gears look wore out. Ford just asked how deep I wanted to go into the beauty, and that the seat track has heavy wear. They didn't know if they could still get parts, but were willing to try. I had to say no. Hopping a seller will re list a certain seat track, or another will appear with memory and heat for a Cartier, and maybe the wife will finally say yes if it is a new year.
