The Jays lacked a true designated hitter in 1991. Rance Mullinicks is a fine player and longtime Blue Jay, but not DH material. In the offseason they went out and got Dave Winfield and they finally got over the hump in 92.

This was the first time the road team won at the Metrodome in the postseason in eight tries. And between the LCS/WS, the Twins were 12-2 at the Metrodome. LDS, on the other hand... It was the Twins' year regardless but the Jays were done the moment Carter tweaked his ribs in Game 3. Plus lack of a proper DH and the wrong rotation order would have did them in anyway (a three man rotation of Guzman, Key, Candiotti, in that order, was the better bet).
