I had a ‘97 Thunderbird V8. I loved that car. I looked forward to driving it more so than any BMW or Mercedes-Benz I’ve owned. Only my Porsche put as big a smile on my face. The Thunderbird was a great compromise between handling and ride. No mass-produced German vehicle rode as well as the T-Bird (including my 2019 BMW M760Li). I couldn’t yet afford a Lincoln Mark VIII in ‘97 and didn’t care for the Cougar. I miss these great Ford products. Mine was very dependable too.

In 94, the 5.0 was replaced with the SOHC 4.6 V-8. Many enthusiasts criticized the move, but the 4.6 version was a full second faster to 60 than the 5.0. Peak power was almost identical, but the modular V-8 has a much broader power curve
@houseofno
@houseofno 9 ай бұрын
Most customers criticized the fact that the 4.6 positioned the horsepower and torque band higher in the 4.6L than in the 5.0L, forcing drivers to work harder to get to the V8's sweet spot. Ford was being pushed by both fuel economy and upcoming emissions demands, with OBD II coming for 1996 models. It was becoming harder and more challenging to make the aging Windsor V8s (the 302 and 351 having been offered since 1968) more compliant with the increasingly restrictive emissions and fuel economy requirements. The CAFE law (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) having been in place since the 1980 model year, fines companies heavily for missing CAFE targets. i think back then, the CAFE benchmark was 27.5 MPG across a company's entire fleet. Selling more fuel efficient cars brings the corporate average UP. Selling more thirsty vehicles brings the numbers down. I don't envy the difficult position this put car companies in: drive away buyers to competing choices and lose money, or risk expensive fines and penalties from the government for failing to meet legally required fuel economy and emissions targets. At least Ford was able to engineer a temporary solution to put a V8 back in the line up until the 1994 model put the 302 out to pasture for the Thunderbird and Cougar. The Mustang got a one year stay of execution, even offering a 351 for the first time in decades as a send off for the 302 (Ford was able to persuade the EPA that the 302 and 351 were members of the same engine family, which was in fact true) in the Mustang Cobra R. The fuel economy and emissions requirements for trucks under 8,500 pounds were less stringent, allowing the 302 to live a little longer in the Explorer and Mountaineer before getting retired in the 2002 Explorer, along with both the 302 and the 351 finally being put to rest in the Super Duty trucks for the 1999 Super Duty redesign, two years after being replaced in the Econoline vans.

Jac Nasser was in charge. He made all FoMoCo's international car maker purchases bring cost reduction offerings to American Ford's. So you had a Mazda gearbox in the SC3800, a Canadian V6 in some MN12s, a downgraded Australian specification 5.0 engine, Explorers with less than 65% content and a Cologne German engine and French- Belgian Transmission. The real reason a proper 5.8 liter engine wasn't put in the T-Bird and XR-7 wasn't fuel economy, Ford could easily make the CAFE averages with a bigger, higher geared engine. It was hood height, and Cost, and the concern of starting another horsepower war. The 2001 Australian Falcon had a low hood too, but got a US made low deck 5.6 liter 369 HP stoker OHV 302, by then a 43 year old engine, right when Jac the Knife had his rein of cost benefit scrutiny cut off. The MN12 remains a wonderful example of providing all the vegetables and sauce, with none of the meat and fat. The meat and fat was sent to Australia in wooden boxes, in 5 liter packages of 520 pound grey cast iron ex Ford Ontario, in five forms of power from 225 to 369 HP, and Detroit...got none of it...

I always felt as I did with the 1971-1973 Mustangs, Ford made these about 1/8 bigger than they should have for performance and agility, and indeed all the luxury and most of the room and better packaging could have occurred in a slightly smaller version of the car. Kudos to Ford for putting a supercharged V6 with a MANUAL transmission in the Thunderbird. That took guts. Now Ford only makes the Mustang, and a bunch of SUV things. I miss the old Ford.

Not a big fan of Fords but ive always really liked these cars, especially with the V8. My uncle had a '97, the last year, and it was a great car. Had a cool 90s greenish color and rode like a Cadillac. Had really good power with the V8 too. I wanted to buy it when he passed but his estate was a mess with all my cousins fighting over everything so they would up stupidly selling it super cheap. If I could find a clean LX V8 or even a Cougar (don't like the body of the Cougar as much) at a decent price I'd love to own one. Sadly so many of these are beat all to hell and nice examples are always priced way too high for my blood.

Ford blew it when they didn't offer a V8 in the "89 redesign.....And sales reflected that as Ford sold around 24,000 less T-Birds in "89 than they did in "88......And the "89 Cougar sold around 16,000 less than the "88 model.....All of those lost sales could've been 5.0 liter equipped vehicles if it was offered.

I never understood the reason for restricting exhaust/motor; The Thunderbird was already heavier than the mustang
@matthewbowen5841
@matthewbowen5841 Жыл бұрын
Probably more for mid-range and/or low-end torque. The restriction probably wasn't the goal, it was a byproduct of a driveability goal to tailor the engine to the type of car (and the mandatory automatic).

@@gsxellence Since the FWD SHO used completely different engines and transmissions, and was a car marketed to a completely different audience, I fail to see your point.
@gsxellence
@gsxellence Жыл бұрын
@@matthewbowen5841 I realize you would fail to see my point but in perspective if it's a different body yet the same chassis why does it have to have restrictive exhaust system, or be detuned. In perspective, think about the 9th generation continental used in the same engine 4.6 as the mark 8, however it was detuned for front wheel drive usage meaning torque steer. Just like the w body 5.3 LS4 motor was detuned and configured for front wheel drive again for torque steerer.. My point is what is the reasoning for detuning and restricting the results of this car which is heavier than the mustang. It wouldn't necessarily compete with the mustang.. And if you think about it if the supercharged version is faster than the 5.0, or The 4.0 that replaced it then what's the difference. That's my point. And just like any four crown Victoria or Mercury Grand Marquis even some of the Lincoln Town cars when they went from single to dual exhaust they gain at least 10 to 15 more horsepower. Just saying. Have a great night.
@matthewbowen5841
@matthewbowen5841 Жыл бұрын
@@gsxellence I guess it could have been engineering reasons, marketing reasons, a combination of both, who knows at this point. Only the engineers tasked with developing each program's powertrain would know. But keep in mind the MN12 and Fox body were very different.

I always thought the MN12 was too bloated looking, especially with the awkward Cougar formal roofline. The Mark carried it off the best, despite even more bloated looking side sculpting. I know the rear independent suspensions from these cars are sought after for all manner of IRS conversions on unrelated cars, like small trucks with air suspensions and restomods and such. Probably their real lasting legacy, aside from the fondly remembered TBird S/C.
