The fact that the '91 Huskies and the '91 Canes didn't meet to decide the National Championship is one of the great tragedies of College Football, and exemplifies how utterly horrible the old bowl systems with their conference tie ins and the sleazy greed of all the beneficiaries of that system was. Granted this wasnt one of Osborne's best teams and this was easily the best UW team in UW history. It would be a couple years until NU went on that insane run from 93-97 where they lost a total of about 3 games in those 5 years (FSU in the 94 orange, at ASU in 96, and vs TX in the inaugural big12 title game in 12/96 - had there not been a big12 title game for Nebraska to stumble in, they may have very well played FSU in the sugar bowl). My biggest thing is how GREAT this UW team was and how little credit or recognition they get. They were so good on both sides of the ball, I think defensively maybe second only to the 1986 Oklahoma sooners who shut out 5 of their 12 opponents (and would have been 6 had arkansas not scored a very late TD in the 87 orange bowl after being down 0-42). This UW team had such awesome balance, thats what made them so special ahd hard to beat - they could beat you even if their offense had an off day (14-3 at USC) or somewhat like this game here when their defense was off to a slow start (trailed 9-21 in the 3rd quarter before their offense just exploded). I truly think they would have beaten Miami this season on a neutral field - now beating them in the orange bowl would have been obviously a bit more of a challenge, but remember their 94 team who was like 7-4 went into the OB and beat a great 94 UM team 38-20. Bottom line is this UW team doesnt get nearly enough credit for being the great team they were when people talk about the best teams in college football history and SHOULD be mentioned in conversations with teams like 95 Nebraska and 01 Miami. They were scary good. I am not going to say they were better than either of those teams but I will say they could have given either a game and even beaten either as well.

Their home winning streak ended with Texas winning in Lincoln during the 98 season I believe on Halloween
@jrino19795 жыл бұрын
I've followed Nebraska my whole life (35+). This is the best team to play and win in Lincoln in this timeframe (except for, maybe, the 1995 Cornhuskers). Nebraska was a top 12 team that year. Won the Big 8. Wasn't even in UW's class, despite playing at home
@ralfigs5 жыл бұрын
It was 26 ,16 Nebraska end of the third quarter. Washington wasn't that much more talented. With Tommy Frazier they may win this game? Frazier committed to Nebraska and started I believe half way through 92? With Frazier Nebraska has a chance to win both games. I will admit Washington matched up better with Miami 91 and could have possibly beat them 92 orange bowl
@jrino19795 жыл бұрын
Washington outrushed Nebraska by about 200 yards in this game, averaging about 7 yards per carry. Had 2 100 yard rushers. Had twice as many first downs and 10 minutes more possession. Had twice as many penalties as well. Nebraska MAY have won with Frazier (though he was in high school at the time) but Washington may have won by 25 but for the penalties. Washington was meaningfully better than Miami, particularly on offense, in 1991. The next year, 1992 - Nebraska and Washington were very similar. If Tommie Frazier is a returning starter in 1992 and not a true freshman, Nebraska likely is 11-0 heading into the Orange Bowl (which they likely would have lost, but still). If you read between the lines after this game, Osborne's quotes suggested that Washington was far above Nebraska. He almost never said anything like that, and never said it about FSU or Colorado, or Oklahoma after the 70s
@ralfigs5 жыл бұрын
@@jrino1979 I'll give you Washington was a great team especially 91, 92 but you're making it seem Nebraska didn't belong on the field with them. I think it's A vs A+? I was speaking hypothetical with Frazier starting the 91 team ( yes he was in HS)..In 92 he became the starter I believe sometime shortly after the Washington loss. That core of group who you're implying didn't belong on the Same field with Washington, won the national championship a couple of years later. Same core group with Frazier adding a few parts .
@ralfigs5 жыл бұрын
@@jrino1979 The reality is Miami should have played Washington in the 92 orange bowl . Conference politics prevented that. As far as Osborne complimenting Washington . He actually did that a lot with teams like OU etc so not out of the ordinary.
@jrino19795 жыл бұрын
"I don't think we're clear out of Washington's league," said Osborne. Sounds like he thinks some people may think that. Also sounds like he's conceding a somewhat meaningful difference between the two teams. I don't recall him saying that with much frequency. Maybe after the 89 FSU game, or OU in 85 (though I was a bit young for that). The only reason I'm "dying on the hill" for this is 1.) Due respect to the 91 Huskies, one of the best teams of my lifetime -MUCH better than the CU or UM teams that beat Nebraska and played for titles around this time and 2.) Not every Osborne team was a top5 team. From 88-91, Nebraska was good. It wasn't great, and that was ok. I would say Nebraska was B or B+ in this game and season. I think post-Osborne retirement his teams have been viewed as like Saban's last decade. Nebraska at its best was better than Saban's last decade. But at times Nebraska was merely good. And that's fine

I have always wanted to see this Husky team play the 95 Nebraska Team. Now that would have been a game. I also think one of Don James best teams, especially defensively, was the 1984 team that trashed Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. This aired regionally. The other game ABC aired at 8 PM that night was Georgia at Alabama, which aired mostly in the South. In 1991, ABC wasn't airing primetime CFB games on a weekly basis. They only usually aired night games in the early weeks of the season, as well as Thanksgiving weekend (which usually was Notre Dame at USC or Stanford), as Saturday night was still considered a strong programming night for the major networks. As the ratings of first-run scripted programming on Saturday nights declined over the years, the major networks stopped for the most part airing new scripted shows on Saturday nights. Repeat programming now dominates Saturday nights, though now Saturday nights are often used for live sports too. ABC began airing CFB games on Saturday night on an almost-weekly basis in 2006, that year two Saturdays were off due to the World Series. From 2007-14, Saturday Night Football had two off weeks where ABC aired a NASCAR race instead. ABC did not want to air NASCAR races on Sunday night to protect their Sunday night lineup, ironically, Fox has been willing to air NASCAR races on Sunday night, and their regular Sunday Night shows are considered more prestigious than those on ABC, as it is a lineup of animated sitcoms anchored by The Simpsons. NBC Sports replaced ESPN/ABC as NASCAR's second half broadcaster in 2015, enabling ABC to air Saturday Night Football every week of the college football season for the first time. Even though the night game is considered ABC's top game every week, during the last 11 years it held the rights to the game, Michigan-Ohio State never aired on SaNF, not even in 2006 when it was #1 VS. #2. Disney executives probably regret not being more assertive in getting that edition of the Big Ten's biggest rivalry played at night. Fox currently holds the rights to the game, and has always aired it at noon, wanting to have that timeslot be their top one. The Big Ten for many years was hesitant about playing night games in November, they now regularly play at night in the early weeks of the month, but have one done so once on the next-to-last week, and never on Thanksgiving weekend, which to me is just as bad as Southern teams refusing to go up north for OOC games late in the season. The refusal to play night games on Thanksgiving weekend when the MAC, a G5 conference with a similar footprint to the B1G, plays night games all throughout November, many on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, is expected to be a sticking point for the Big Ten's next TV contract negotiations. I think the Big Ten should sever ties with Fox over the character of Fox News, and send a message in the process. Fox would be forced to sell their stake in Big Ten Network to one of the companies that would be a partner beginning in 2024.

Washington was a good team that beat a decent Michigan team. Miami beat a weak (in bowls that is) Nebraska team plus Canes were playing at home. Don’t forget that if FSU made that field goal, there wouldn’t be any arguments. In 1990, the person on the rules committee that dealt with field goals died in a boating accident. He always voted against narrowing the width of goal post. New person voted to narrow it.
