I've seen Doug DeMuro's review, he is 6'3" and fit just barely although he had to slouch down to see past the door beam... the AZ-1's 55hp engine reminds of the car I used to drive as an Uber, a Hyundai Eon with a 0.88L 3-cyl engine with a 65hp on tap... it's a tiny hatchback with an interior almost the size of a compact car... so performance is expectedly lacking but with the A-C turned off the car accelerate briskly... it's no sports car but I had a lot of fun in the mountain road on the way to Antipolo, east of Manila, shifting between 3rd (screaming to redline) & 4th (running out of breath almost stalling)... no thanks to the pandemic it's out of my hands now...

It sounds kind of tinny in the video, and doesn't do the car justice. I drove one once, and it sounded really good, especially the whoosh when the waste gate opened. I drove a Cappuccino and the AZ1 back to back, and the same engine sounded better in the AZ1.

Value? They have 63 hp and sell for over $15,000. You can get a Honda Beat or Suzuki Cappuccino for half that, and be just as fast. You won't get gullwing doors, but the Suzuki arguably looks better, has a convertible roof and has a traditional front-engine rear-drive layout like the MX-5. The Beat is MR like this AZ-1 while also having Honda reliability and convertible roof. AZ-1 is overpriced AF.

Yeah this was a good one, I knew of this car but don't know much about it. The owner has done her necessary mods to make the car useful, and it's fun to watch Jay and her pool their knowledge of the vehicle. Too many other comments focusing on her as a woman or presenter, or JDM worship. It's just a very interesting car on it's own and a great example and two good presenters for it. JDM + female owner = comment poison.

What is not mentioned here but it is mentioned in McLaren documentary is that when Gordon Murray created McLaren F1 he got inspired from this small car allot, as result the doors are similar, steering wheel and rear tail lights.. Also i read that McLaren wanted a different engine for F1 first project and obviously Honda were more into small engines will not do it (not 100% sure if Ferrari or Lamborghini was asked..) but anyway they got refused so, then they turn to BMW which by that time have won few championship races with BMW -M1, the rest is history..

Starting with the weekend category in styling it's not beautiful but it is cute and gets a 6 out of 10...acceleration feels good but zero to 60 is dismal by today's standards and gets a 1 out of 10...handling is sharp & go-cart like but gets scary at high speeds & earns it a 5/10...Fun factor is high and gets a 7/10....cool factor is high even though nobody here knows what it is, it gets a lot of attention earning a 6/10...earning it a total weekend score of 25/50 Moving onto the daily category, starting with features it has virtually no modern tech & gets a 2 out of 10. Comfort is barely there & gets a 2/10. Practicality is dismal due to it's lack of storage but I'll give it credit for it's good fuel economy and earns a 3 out of 10. Quality is low, materials feel cheap, and with questionable reliability earns it a 4/10...Value is decent, it's a fun car but prices are starting to go up since it's now available for U.S. export and gets a 7/10...bringing the daily score up to 18/25. Add it all up and the total Doug score to 43...I really don't have any other cars I've reviewed to compare it with, so here are some other small 1980s cars for comparison. It does decent for it's age, and for the money is a fun rare car to drive. 🚗

A milestone show for Jay in many ways. An appealing passionate young professional, one definitely "into" JDM cars, with a clear vision, on a budget, plus great engineering credentials and credibility, who knows the vehicle's history well.
@TheFogLakeshore
@TheFogLakeshore 5 жыл бұрын
I would like this on a very limited basis, i.e. what Jay already does. The general engineering and gearhead knowledge of your average JDM fan is just very low, and would lower the quality of the channel, which is one of the few remaining HQ car channels left. Jay has brought an appropriate amount of JDM to the channel, I don't think it would be served by a special section. Also this car is about equivalent to a Foxbody Mustang GT in good shape. It's not that exciting, you really have to have an interest in JDM to go wild over it. It's an interesting example of a different car culture, palatable in limited doses. At the end of the day it's a 64hp car with a terrible ride and awful safety amenities.

jNunz that shows nervousness, not necessarily a lack of knowledge. She's talking in front of a camera to someone who's much older and known for his interest in/knowledge of cars. As an engineer, she probably doesn't do a lot of public speaking. If she was giving a lot of erroneous information about the car, you might have a point, but she's not. Face it- a girl can be knowledgeable and enthusiastic about cars as well.

@@B5s4 Well yeah but did you see the Schuppan 962CR owner who said the car had Brembo brakes; despite them clearly saying Alcon on them and was clearly only there to bump up the "provenance" of his investment piece. Hey jay, you might be quite surprised at just how much you can screw out of the kei class engines. Tons of bolt on turbo kits available for them. With turbo and fuel delivery upgrade, better exhaust a decent tune and they easy pump out double factory output. They are by law governed to that 55kw output. Just an ecu swap or remap gets you an extra 30-40 ponies on standard running gear!

This gives me a better understanding of my 93 right--hand-drive 2-door JDM Suzuki Escudo “tintop”. It is loaded with features not found on a typical North American Suzuki Sidekick with central locking, 4-speed OD automatic (found only in the rare X90 2-door body style) and power side view mirrors. Yes, the 4-speed OD WAS AVAILABLE on 4-doors but NOT on 2-doors! It also has several quirky accessories like the “Hat Trick Edition” spare tire cover and the “Super Off-road” fog light rock guards. I have driven it on long road trips (even mildly off-road at a Suzuki meet) with zero problems. It is really nice for a 1.6 -16-valve with 28,000 miles on the clock. Bonus - super easy to maintain with parts found at the local auto parts store.
