I miss that sound.

That was my Ser.#001 steering wheel that was in Emmo's hands as he crossed the line. BUT, THE WHEEL WAS STOLEN at the Victory Banquet that night!!!...Emmo got many more wheels off me during the season. Ser.#411 was my last one shipped.

They ran turbocharged engines at Indianapolis for thirty years. The reliability had to do with how hard they were pushing new designs, not any inherent weakness in turbocharged engines. Some of us wish they'd allow TCs on engines so long as they're considerably smaller: challenge the designers to keep improving the breed, just as always happens in golden ages.

Raul Boesel got screwed as would have won this race! (got called for a speeding penalty in the pits which was proven to be erroneous and had a stop and go penalty under green which cost dearly) He was the fastest car all day hands down.

I agree. When CART first started it wasnt much liked like the IRL is now. All we need is time, turbos, new chassis, and more promotion for crying out loud.

@Mrrobjdav It's not just Tony George, it's the driver&team owner as well. Thing about it: no team racing in IRL in 1996, it's stop right there. Racing is a business, and cart driver were a bit underpaid compare to Nascar drivers back than, plus team owner had to spend a lot of ressource for little revenues in the early 90's... So, the idea was to cut the cost and be a bit "nascar like". We seen similar thing in "IMSA-ALMS/Grand-am" and even F1. The winner of all that was nascar ;)

It's quite surprising that Emmo won the 77th indy500. The reason why he was infamous of that 500: He drank bottle of orange juice rather than milk!

@encinobalboa Because he wanted to give the little guy as much a chance to win the Indianapolis 500 as the big rich guy. The same concept of taking away single-class in Indiana High School basketball; to "give the little schools a chance to win." The basketball playoffs have never been close to being back as high as they were, since.

To tell you the truth... Tony George and Kevin Kalkhoven need to get this Unification on the road. Indy will do just that becoming together not this BS IRL and CCWS is giving. And one thing bring back the turbocharger back at Indy... its been absent for 11 years.

Awesome race! Too bad indycar isnt as good as it once was.

Who says they the Indy cars don't pass as much these days?? What??? With the lone exception of last year, we have seen MORE passing and MORE cars on the lead lap than at any time in the last 30 plus years (that's how many races I've witnessed live at the Speedway so I know what I'm talking about).

But The turbos do sound better to some people anyways. When I say some people thats a fact because If I say most = that's an opinion. In my humble opinion they fit Indy just right.

dont let it fool you, there was another side to this story, the CART guys were being a-holes too, remember there are 2 sides to a disagreement, I regularly watch the IRL and think its great and very competitive, sure I hope for a solution soon, but im not going to blame only Tony George and the IRL for the split. oh and by the way i do watch F-1 and like it but it tends to get a bit boring when every race is won by 1 minute, just my opinion though

The 1982 Johncock - Mears battle owns!!! The 1992 LittleAl - Goodyear battle owns!!! The 1993 Indianapolis 500 race was cleaner than 2006 Indianapolis-500. The Indy-500 races of the past owns not the present.

This race would've been a lot more fun if the end wasn't tainted by an admittedly brilliant driver not drinking something other than the milk.

I watched the first race, still pales in comparison to the 90's, and CART era, in other words, at least on road/street courses, pretty boring, nobody could really pass. Hopefully ovals will be better.
