Anyone notice that Lance Armstrong has exceptional luck on rainy days? This day was rainy, the day at Sestriere in 1999 was raining, I think also Hautacam 2000 was rainy, and, of course, the final time trial in 2003, the year that Ullrich nearly beat him in the tour: that day, Ullrich slipped and fell on the wet road, blowing away any chance of that happening. Interesting, no?

No luck involved. It's well known that Armstrong was one of the best in handling the bike, he had a perfect cycling technique. And lots of courage as well. So on slippery roads he had an edge.

The kid hammers, plain and simple. He made a HUGE mark with his natural pro like animal strength from a real young age, so much that his presence always made a space of 2 riders.(imagine being in top form, punchin the hills in the big ring, and Lance comes around you like your on a stroll, and hes the motorcycle)

On this race Armstrong wasn't on drugs. The USADA decission stripped him of the results obtained since 98 until 2010. Armstrong claims he began into doping back in the 95. So, in 93 he was clean.

Indurain, Chiapucci, Tchmil, Museeuw, Ludwig, Fondriest, Giovanetti, Lauritzen, and all the others of the chase group were no less doped than Armstrong. So what's the difference? Simple: Armstrong was stronger on the day. I doubt he had a better doping program since this is a subject in which he gained his knowledge from a well-known Italian sports scientist.

Good win by armstrong back in his initial days as a pro. But, look at the course - classics style with some hills but mostly flat. Armstrong did very well on hilly courses but the high mountains were too hard, like many other classic riders find. However, for some reason (WITH THE HELP OF DRUGS?) he morphed into a mountain goat.

Francisco Conconi doped many of the Italians at this time. There was actually medical records of rider's hematocrits from the Conconi's Italian doping in the early 90s (almost all in the upper 50s. Normal hematocrit is like low 40s for a cyclist. This made it impossible to compete clean at this level of competition after about 1991. It still continues to this day actually, but in a more brutal manner because a lot of the effective drugs are experimental/ not banned/ not widely known.

Great ride, a well deserved win. The followers could have caught him, but few wanted to commit. Chiappuchi is not afraid, but needed help. With three Italians in the chase, why could they not cooperate? They most likely would have caught LA. Were they afraid of Indurain and Musseuw? And why do commentators say LeMond won two WC? Does his Junior Worlds win not count?

Oslo at its best!! What a weather! At this time cycling was not a very popular sport in Norway, as you can tell by the lack of a crowd along the last 5 km of the course. Home favourite Dag Otto Lauritzen led the race for a long time, and raised some norwegian eyebrows. Now cycling is picking up, with Thor Hushovd regularly winning stages in the TdF. Should we ever get the world championships again I think it would be a much better event. Note Bjarne Riis, TDF winner to be, is also in there.

Indurain said that group chased him as hard as they possibly could - he simply couldn't believe how strong Lance was that day. Lemond wasn't there to see it first hand. I think this is one reason Lemond said in '93 that Armstrong would always be a one-day rider. Indurain wasn't as willing to sell him short on potential.

He's good, damn good, best *grand tour stage racer* of his era. But not The Best That Ever Was. Lance was lucky. Of course he had the guts to go for it, but he wasnt the strongest. Most in the chasing pack was stronger than Lance. They just couldnt commit to catching him. It happens every now and then. Indurain could probably alone have caught him if he had used all his force, but that would mean carry his biggest rivals to victory. He didnt want to do that, nobody wanted to, so lance won. Same way underdog Rui Costa won in '13

"And why would anyone hate Lance Armstrong?" I'm saying there is some reason to. What I meant by "golden boy" was that he isn't some perfect, flawless god whom the Europeans just chose to despise out of spite. He's (less so these days, but that's a maturity that's fairly recent) always been a bit of an arrogant prick, and a lot of people don't like him not for of all the tours he won, but the way he won... like some people hate the Patriots because they didn't like the style they won by.

No, he wasn't as good in 1993 as he was in 1999-2005. In 1993-1995 he was a good one-day races rider, while he became a Tour de France contender after the cancer. If you think he was that good at 22, what do you think of Indurain surpassing him at the Bergerac time trial after only 16 kms during the 1994 TDF? He was a totally different type of rider before and after the cancer. Sorry for my bad english. I'm from Spain.

Not true. I don't have a personal problem with Lance Armstrong, but I certainly think that it is not reasonable not to like the man. He has a great "PR Face", but there are moments where some rather... unfreindly... elements of his personality show up. That and he almost certainly doped in '99. I'm cool with that, since so did everyone else. But to say he's some kind of golden boy who the Europeans hate for no reason is rather naïve.
@1stPlaceDirector
@1stPlaceDirector 17 жыл бұрын
Yes, it would have been great if he also concentrated on those races too, but now we know why. It has come to light that almost all the top Tour de France pros were on drugs and Lance was clean and still had to compete against cheaters. He probably figured that without cheating he needs to specialize. Ulrich, Pantani, Veranque and the other top contenders were banned from the Tour to prove it. I don't hold that against Armstrong for specializing to avoid cheating.

Lance's body is a very very good responder to drug therapy (particularily red cell jacking) and therefore dominated the 2nd EPO world Championships. Plus it was pouring rain and most of the favorites had crashed hard at some point during the race. Lance was certainly jacked on HGH, Insulin, Testosterone, Cortizone, anabolic steroids, amphetamines at that point too.
