For what it's worth, she deserved the Gold on Bars in Atlanta since Khorkina clearly hit the bar in Komova style. That aside, Amy had one of the most difficult vaults in the world with the double twisting vault on the old horse. Uber difficult! She was so talented.

I much prefer Dominique's floor routine here to the one she used in 96. I can understand why she stopped doing the back to back tumbling runs since they weren't valued as much as they should have been, but her music and choreography here was much better than in her 96 routine.

They need to bring that kind of tumbling back by rewarding complex combinations. But to be honest, as crowd pleasing as it was, that style of tumbling never did impress the judges much. With the exception of a minor me in 1992, Dawes was always underscored on floor exercise. So much so that she actually completely abandoned her signature pass before the 1996 Olympics, in favor of a double layout mount (which had a higher value). Shame!

I love how back then everyone was so stuck on small heights, tiny body types & young ages. Look at gymnasts now! They are more mature, some in their 20's & Oksana Chusovitina being in her late 30's. Everyone, whether a new senior or a world stage veteran can be just as talented and up for the same shot at the Olympics. I'm glad the sport has evolved from eating disorders and boxed ideas of perfect gymnasts, to just a sport of amazing women who are athletic & graceful. It's how it should be :)

These judges were so biased and smoking crack! How the hell did Miller score a 9.400 on the beam when she basically fell on the dismount? In addition to the mistake on the mount, that should have been an 8.900. And seriously, a 9.9 on the floor exercise - wtf? She only had ONE difficult tumbling pass in the beginning, and she visibly messed up the landing. Dawes routine was way more difficult, with no noticeable mistakes, yet scored basically the same. And how did Miller's second vault score higher than the first one when the first was better? So biased!

i also think, with the changes that have resulted on a greater focus on difficulty, (in recent years) a lot of the grace, dance elements have been lost. its most obvious when you look back on these routines in the 1990s; floor and especially beam. in beam now days, next to no handstands being held, in various poses - which used to show the gymnasts control and strength; on the floor, i think few things look more beautiful than a single layout with a step out (like at the end of a couple of shannon's tumbling runs) - its so elegant, and the height the gymnasts get, coupled with the apparent 'slowness' in comparison to the double somersaults - but not 'wroth' anything in terms of difficulty. maybe the solution is to add 10 seconds to routines, so they can still aim for more difficulty, but allow for grace still ..

looking back at these comps years later with the benefit of hindsight its never bee more apparent that raising the minimum age for the Olympics from 14 to 16 was by far the best thing for athletes, especially gymnasts. i think it would be even better if they raised it to 18. Having to be older has meant their bodies are stronger; so many of these gymnasts look under weight and unwell (Shannon less so here, but at age 15 she looked terrible, quite unwell). Older has meant stronger bodies, and with the likes of simone biles - more exciting gymnastics. Its also terrible how hard these young girls are training - simone biles and shawn johnson both trained a lot less than most gymnasts; their coaches recognized more, is not better - just made higher risks of injury.
