In the Summer of 1996 I was 5. Had just turned 5. And I will ALWAYS remember this one more than any other. The gymnast of ALL Countries were INCREDIBLE. I remember pretending like I was a part of the Magnificent Seven by pretending to do routines on the arm chair of my couch. A lot of things I learned by watching these ladies. How to do a cartwheel, round-off, backbend, handstand, splits, and split jumps. I idolized them. And all these year's later, coming back to reminiscence, it's a bit harder since my Sister's passing. But all these year's later, at the age of 31, and they're still as lovely, beautiful, and talented as I remember.

The fluff may be corny, but during Moceanu's at about 23:15, her footwork on beam was beautiful. I feel like gymnasts today don't pay attention to the little things like being on high toe on beam. I love gymnastics but I have noticed that the gymnast the media hypes to become the next Olympic all-around champion does not happen nor does that gymnast turn out to be the top performer for the US team at the games. In 1992 Kim Zmeskal was touted as the next Olympic champ, but it turned out Shannon Miller was the top US gymnast at these games. In 1996 Dominique Moceanu was touted, Shannon Miller was the top US gymnast at the games, but everyone was overshadowed by Kerri Strug's vault on a sprained ankle. 2008, Shawn Johnson was hyped as the next star, but Nastia Luikin was the top US performer. It had something to do with her results in the last year. In the second half of 94 Dawes clearly eclipsed her as the top U.S gymnast, beating her for all 5 golds at the 94 U.S Championships, then single handedly leading the team to their surprise Team Silver at the November 94 Team Worlds where Miller withdrew after compulsories due to "fatigue" or some weird reason. In the first half of 95 she lost to Powell and Borden both at the American Cup, and then just barely beaten Borden to win the Pan Am Games where both had a fall off beam. They weren't going to talk about her as if she were still the dominant gymnast in the world since.....well she wasn't. Just remember she came 12th All Around at the 95 worlds, 9th at the 96 Games, and won only 1 individual medal at both events (beam at the 96 Olympics). Her dominance was clearly at an end by this point, even if she was still a contender along with Dawes and Moceanu for the U.S AA title.

No matter what ,these talented gymnast of this era were and still are the best of the best. They all worked so hard for themselves and all aimed to do what was expected of them without quitting! Yes, for some,the sport training was brutal which we all know now but none the less they became top in the game due to their own wants and needs to be winners. Womens gymnastics in the future will rise above adversity and will hopefully regrow to a sport that is better for the young womens mental and physical capabilities without compromising their inner self, bodies and confidence or futures. These women all earned their medals and titles because they had dreams and they should all be very proud of their accomplishments even from so long ago! These ones especially are Americas hero's!!

"Smile -- you're on camera" - Martha Karyoli to Dominique Moceanu (@ ~ 35:20) Did I hear that right?
@gifthorse97795 жыл бұрын
probably. the athletes in gymnastics or the Americans in general put a large emphasis on smiles. But I'v heard lately that the style of the Karyoli"s training was too brutal, called the old guards, valeri luikin being criticized for the same thing. We'll see what happens to USAG now. Course we won't see it's effect for about 15 yrs from now.

Gift Horse all about the karolys was toxic. Terrible coaching, always seeking publicity at the expense of the gymnasts. It’s a shame that USAG gave them such authority for so many years. good riddance they’re finally gone.

@ajimenez1719ify2 жыл бұрын
I'm not quite sure why these commentators always act like a fall is controllable. To be honest, most of the time, you have already fell before you know what hit you. You don't have time to think about where to place your feet or to keep your shoulders up or in line or anything else for that matter. Yes, you can practice a skill over and over but, if your off, your off. I can remember when I was competing back in the early 90's, everytime I would fall I would be so surprised and wonder what happened just like everyone else wondered. I didn't think ," oh, I didn't keep my chest up", or ," oh, it was me loosing confidence in myself ". Its just, " I fell this time, better luck next time". That's it. Sometimes you just can't control it. That's all I'm saying.

I often used to wonder if Bart Conner, and/or Kathy Johnson Clarke ever felt awkward trying to clean up the misstatements of the NBC staff. You think Tim at least now knows that at least a half dozen people did back-to-back tumbling like Dawes before or during her career.

Before 1997, you could compete as a senior if you turned 15 in the same calendar year and I believe that if it was the year before an Olympic year (as in you would turn senior the following year) they'd let you move up early. But I could be wrong on that second part.

The way the commentators (especially Tim) cherry pick at how the gymnasts land, to the exclusion of all the other amazing elements of their routines, and assign feelings and thoughts to the girls that they may or may not have, is just another way of objectifying women. The Tim and Elfie nonsense has slightly lessened over the years, but not enough.

I don't mind the nitpicking--they are experts--but the nonsense about tears, and their weight, and the endless CLOSEUPS on their faces is vomit-inducing. I like Tim and Elfie but NBC's commentary (they are the power structure that dictates how T&E talk) is effing AWFUL.
@peterpeterkins57767 жыл бұрын
Tim makes an effort to really get to know the gymnasts, that's what I like about him. He's always talking about speaking with the gymnasts and their coaches individually. He's super knowledgeable and as the other poster pointed out, he's always right about who's getting chosen.

It makes me so sad after reading her book that she couldn't even celebrate winning bc they put her down so. Even told her parents not to congratulate her too much. In 96 Bela convinced her she wasn't injured when she was, they told her she was imagining it, turned out to be a huge stress fracture right before the Olympics...and the karoyli's could not have given less of a shit. When Marta took over she still forced girls on the national team to train til they broke and then sent them to Nassar.

lol moceanu only won because Shannon had a miss. winning by only 2 tenths when someone else has a miss and fluke break on another event isn't impressive, esp. considering (if you mute all the noise) that Shannon is such a far superior gymnast.... the faux hype for moceanu and trying desperately to tear Shannon down is so obviously staged. I wouldn't be surprised if this was pre-recorded and voiced over by the 'commentators' after the fact - did bela karolyi personally direct those ridiculous fluff pieces??
@gifthorse97795 жыл бұрын

@codydesjardins68204 жыл бұрын
The only reason it wasn't a bigger gap was compulsories where Miller was well ahead. In optionals alone Moceanu won by roughly the margin of Miller's fall and that was with getting only a 9.9 start value on floor (she expected a 10 but didn't get bonus for something). I agree Moceanu was way overhyped but this is fucking NBC, what do you expect. They are always interested in the next exciting thing. Miller had already been eclipsed as the top U.S gymnast in the 2nd half of 94 by Dawes although Dawes was out of form here, and in early 95 she had mediocre showings like being beaten by Powell and Borden at the American Cup. Little surprise the hype machine on Miller was not at an all time high, it was clear her dominance was over already. People could already see she had little to no shot to defend her World AA later that year where she came I think 12th (Moceanu by the way 5th).
@grantdesjardins7643 жыл бұрын
@Russell Hayman Well compulsories aren't part of the final All Around scores at a Worlds or Olympics. So in that sense it is an important thing to point out.
@ilikeyoutube8363 жыл бұрын
Dominique wasn't overhyped. was a prodigy, with amazing talent and potential. She was the youngest junior and senior national champion, and the youngest gymnast to win Olympic gold for a reason. Unfortunately she had a lot of bad injuries and bad luck which prevented her from reaching her full potential. Thats a very different thing than being overrated. It says a lot about her skill at this time that Shannon Miller, one of the greatest gymnasts in history, was her only real competition, and the only gymnast who could barely beat her. She also beat Svetlana Khorkina, also one of the greatest gymnasts in history, for gold in the Goodwill Games. Dominique may have burnt out before her time, but she was very very good while she lasted.

They stopped counting more than two of a skill, so a handspring + 3 LOSO wouldn't be rewarded anymore. Gymnasts are also older now and therefore taller, so it's harder to squeeze as many tumbling moves on the beam
