Narrated slideshow of the Manitoba portion of a western Canada VIA Rail train trip in 1994. The show covers the ride to Churchill, a tour of the surroundings and tours to view polar bears and other wildlife. On the return south, a side trip on the mixed train from The Pas to Lynn Lake. Includes an update on rail service in the present.

Travelled on those rails from 1956 till 1978 while living there and now still use that mode of travel on my visits HOME SWEET HOME

In Jan. 1988 I rode the Algoma Central all the way to Hearst. Power was a GP38 and a GP. Amazing snow/ice scenery. The locals drank all the way until they got off. Usually to ice fishing locations. I never knew a human could drink so much. 12 packs everywhere.

Great video! Just subscribed. I think the 90's was a fascinating time for rail in North America. Still had steam heated cars and older first gen diesel locomotives. The only problem with your channel is that you need more videos. Keep them coming.

It's interesting that they were running a mixed train and delivering grain via 40' box cars. That reminds me of the railroading scene in Newfoundland.

Great video. I always wanted to do that trip West bound out of Toronto. But I have done the trip East on Via Rail and Ferry to PEI Thank you

Major issues late last year with the Pukatawagan mixed. From 3 coaches to one, ticket sales limited to 40 per trip at The Pas, train subject to cancelation if a crew member marks off. Many reserve residents are stranded in The Pas for days or even weeks. Arctic Gateway says they'll get refurbished cars for the Pukatawagan train this year but wasn't specific.

Thank you for your videos. Churchill's population has declined considerably. One wonders if some distant politicians will decide it isn't worth it.

That's what happened to the Newfoundland Railway in 1988. The Canadian Government decided an oddball network of narrow gauge track wasn't worth the hassle despite how valuable it was to those who lived on the interior of the province and they tore it all out.

Another fascinating, well documented adventure. I would be very interested to see a slide show of Toronto in the early 70s, as another video suggests you may have some photos of.
