Changing the leaking oil filter adapter on my 1995 Chevy K3500 7.4 liter (454) pickup. Was about a 30 minute job even in 10 degrees Fahrenheit weather outside.

So I was able to find plug removal sockets. Turns out it isn't 5/16" its actually an 8mm drain removal socket that is needed. If you don't wanna ruin an extension. But thank you for the video this is the only one I was able to find!!!

I'm pretty sure mine was 3/8" when I measured it. I went to the parts store and purchased hex head plugs to replace them :) after grinding down an extension the first time.

Yup. Thank you! yours is the only video I could find on this. My suburban has the same oil leak. I'll try to find the pipe plug socket that fits those plugs. My parts store is just around the corner.

I have this same project going on right now, 95 GMC 3500, 454, I’m glad I watched your video before I tore into it and realized I need torx sockets, and start yelling obscenities. 😄👍🏻

Kind of stinks that it's another tool to purchased, but they do work really good.

Just a quick update... Okie was right about the 8mm pipe plug, although a 5/16" works too (on .003" difference). Also, my bolts were T-40's, not T-30's. Thanks again for the vid... I expect it will help many more.. Sorry to hear about you having to do it twice..

Thank you for making this video! I have a 94 Chevy K2500 454-7.4L Silverado and it has the exact same adapter and it is currently leaking. It's a small leak, but enough I want to get it stopped. This video was the only thing I've found that had ANY information on this. Again, thanks so much, this is going to help %1000. Special thanks to all in the comments posting tools and part numbers. MUCH APPRECIATED!

Very helpful... Working on mine in a blazing 30 degrees.. The square is a 5/16".. Tried the grinding method and was able to get one out. The other was so tight I had to go buy a hardened bit. Thanks again for the post. David

I bought a Suburban with a blown engine. I had a puddle on the ground from the adapter the first time I cranked the blown engine over. The socket you need is a SUNEX TOOLS 310PC. I went to the parts store and demanded hex head plugs, they had Dorman branded ones. For the cooler lines, I ground the old crimps off, installed new hydraulic hose, and used some good hose clamps. I have a feeling they will work TONS better than the aftermarket replacement ones. The aluminum crimps only last about 2 years.

Thanks ran into the same thing. You did trying to figure that out. Super bad oil leak must be that gasket. Looks like I need to go find it at 3/8 extension I can grind down :-)

SPOILER ALERT::: You can actually see when I show you the old O ring there’s a chunk taken out... then on the video you can see where that chunk is stick to the face of the block. I didn’t catch that before putting this whole thing back together and it leaked like a sive... man was I pissed off. Had to take it all back apart again and scrape that off but the second time was the charm: leak free! And I did delete those oil cooler lines. I plugged both of them right at the block and it worked great no issues.

Hey Dano, good deal on your vid. Like everyone here, you are the only source with the same oil filter adapter layout as mine. I am a 1992 K3500 Silverado. The O ring I got in a kit from O'Reilly's does not look like yours. Gonna' go to the dealer and get a factory O ring gasket. AND the big deal, would not have known about the Torx under those damn square plugs. You saved us all and those who didn't comment. Goona' get a Torx T40 and 60 to make sure I can put it back together. You a 95 and 'keep' with his 92 leads me to believe I could be either one. And, the Ol' ripoff dealer will have an exploded view on his software screen. I wonder about the aluminum gasket that mounts over the Oring and the adapter and oil cooler line connection. Did you leave it? Thanks big man!

My 1998 K2500 7.4l is exactly the same. I could not find this information anywhere else... even on the forums. Thumbs way up! Did you end up replacing your oil cooler lines? I am having a devil of a time getting them to come out from between the front diff and the engine...

Not sure, I imagine there’s a part number out there somewhere for this but I found the right size replacement in a Dorman “Help!” O ring kit sold at oriley auto parts.
@fpsdano7446
@fpsdano7446 4 жыл бұрын
I think it was part number 82560 at oriley auto parts. There were several different sizes in there. If you’re close to the parts store, just take the adapter in there with you so you get the right size/gauge.

I had mine replaced 2-3 years ago and under 10k miles, and it's leaking again, not sure how well those dorman help kits are for quality. I've broken a couple socket extensions trying the same method used here to make the proper size adapter. PITA!

Follow up, I didn't use the HELP kit since it looks like they use the wrong rubber which hardens & leaks. I did some searching and found o-ring number 236 in Silicone 70 durometer seems to be a perfect fit for my 94 454 engine.

my oil cooler lines are actually leaking in my case, have you figured out if you can just plug up the 2 holes?

@fpsdano7446 4 жыл бұрын
geddon81 yep tear off the lines and plug the ports right on the face of the block. Can’t remember what size, maybe 3/8”?? but get two NPT caps they’ll thread right in. Problem solved!

@fpsdano7446
@fpsdano7446 4 жыл бұрын
geddon81 if yours looks like mine, then you should be good to go disconnecting the cooler lines and plugging the ports on the block. If you have cooler lines on your oil filter housing, you have a different gen motor than I do and I can’t say for sure.
@geddon81
@geddon81 4 жыл бұрын
FPS Dano oh no it’s a gen v like yours , 2 lines going into the block . BUT as it turns out it’s not the problem, the freeze plug above that blew out lol. That’s what was leaking , made it look like the lines underneath were leaking . Ugh , I been fixing this truck since I bought it in October 🤣🤣🤣
