Join me for this little rebuild, of sorts. Still getting over a cold but managed to get this together this week, hope you enjoy!

Tyres: SimWorks/Panaracer Super Yummy
Crank: Shimano FC-Mc18
Derailleurs: rear LX, front Acera(LX was a bit too rust pitted)
Brakes: Marin Lite
Levers: Shimano MT60
Shifters: Shimano MT60 Thumbies
Handlebar: Salsa Moto Ace 17 degree
Stem: Marin Lite
Seat: Selle Italia Turbo(now)
Wheels: DX Shimano hubs, black Araya rims
Other: Cult/ODI Cruiser grips, Koolstop rear pads, wellgo pedals

I’ve had mine for nearly 30 years, and it’s recently back on the road! The bar ends are a bit scrubbed up, I’ve noticed a few rust patches here and there, but all in all it’s still a great bike and it’s aged better than I have! I’ve put a few thousand miles in over the years (in pretty rough terrain) so all credit to Marin for building a great bike that’s really stood the test of time.

Hi from the UK! Awesome video; my favourite thing is the format of you doing the restoration/rebuild AND having a decent amount of riding time with the finished product in the same video. You could really make it your video style that stands out against other mtb resto youtubers as most concentrate on the build and have very little 'post build'. All the little camera angles around the bike and riding in different situations, creating the 'feel' of experiencing the bike myself really works. I've just subscribed! Hope lots more do to :)

I happen to live just south of Marin in San Francisco and love that this frame’s named after a trail that I ride somewhat regularly. Small world dude!

Just bought a 1992 Bobcat Trail, couldn't believe it when I got it home, covered in dust but still had original Marin tyres with lots of tread left along with all other original fittings including Marin Lite seat and grips!. The Alivio shifters are a bit gummed up but I'm sure a good clean will get then working again.. Yours looks great. John

Rad!! Mine was covered in a bit of dust, too haha. Awesome!! Mine didn’t have the grips, but it had the seat/bar/stem 🤩 and no it has the brakes, too 😎 Yeah they normally clear out and function again, hopefully yours do! Thanks heaps, have a great day and enjoy the Bobcat Trail!! 👌

I was just given one of these a month back!!! Single speeded up with a nice front rack but I’ve got full custom disc breaks and dropper post in the works!

rebuilding a marin muirwoods of the same age at the moment, similar stem but it has the roller guide for the front brake cable, had trouble with the rear hub, seized solid and badly pitted cups so it sounds like a concrete mixer when you pedal, going to attempt to save the hub if i can

Awesome! Those are a great piece, nice and smooth actuation. And it hides the cable more, too! Wow, yeah that happens sometimes. Hopefully it’s saveable or you find something similar to replace it with 🤞 some new bearings and cones might help it a bit, maybe get it to a dull rumble haha

Autosol metal polish works great for the aluminum parts.

Yeah Autosol then Brasso does a pretty good job for oxidised aluminium, but tarnished and scratched parts need to be sanded back first. Time consuming but great result!

Just recently discovered your videos and been enjoying them. Question though, what is that you're using to hold the bottom bracket tool in place around 1:47? I noticed you screwed something in (I assume it locks into the threads of the square taper bits) and had never seen that before. Seems super useful.

Hey! It’s just a bolt with a couple washers to hold the tool on. It’s really handy! The bolt is only a little bit longer than a regular crank bolt, it’s an m8 thread from memory but can’t remember the thread pitch.

Hi from Germany! Nice rebuild! I'm wondering how you got your hands on a long-enough bolt to secure the bottom bracket tool. I'm trying to find out which screw I need to fit the bb inner thread. Can you help me out on that?

Hey I think it’s an m8 thread, can’t remember the pitch though! Depending on how thick your tool is, you may be able to use a regular crank bolt 🤞 the bolt I use is only a little bit longer than a crank bolt, as my bottom bracket tool is quite narrow

Great restro! What are you using for your rust prevention within the frame? I like that you're just maintaining the original paint. Your videos provide solid techniques. Solid work mate!👍😎

Thanks! I use “Penetrol rust treatment” but if you can find Boeshield T9 then use that, other sprays that people use are Framesaver, Lanolin and Fish Oil. I use the Penetrol stuff because it’s available locally and I’ve use it before I heard of Boeshield(which I can’t find locally anyway). Thanks heaps! 🤙😁

🤙 Yeah can’t remember if I went over the recalls in the video, the ones that came on it weren’t marked so people should be aware and just replace them if in doubt. FC-CT90, FC-M290 and FC-MC12 are recalls for those wondering, but Google has the answers!

I had this bike in the 90s and the crank snapped on me and took a massive chunk out of my leg. Other than that it was one fun bike to ride.

So I did hear right? It’s before my time but they recalled these cranks ay? Any ideas what it was that made them snap? Bad material or design flaws?

@@cookster2471 I'm guessing a manufacturing fault that caused the aluminium to fail under pressure. mine were only 2 years old at the time and both sides snapped. The guy in the bikeshop told me it should be covered by warranty but I bought the bike used.

I’m currently trying to replace the headset on mine, struggling massively to find a direct replacement anywhere. A point in the right direction would be appreciated

Hi there! I haven’t had to find a replacement for this headset, but would think Tange make one to fit. Would be weird if they don’t! 😳

Thanks for the advice. I ordered a Tange Seiki - Falcon FL270c, just fitted it and it’s spot on !
